Not sure why you guys think you will get a free iPod with a new MBP.. Did you read the Terms and conditions? Where does it list the new MBP ?

From Apple: Buy a new MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, iMac with SuperDrive or Power Mac G5 from the Apple Store for Education or an Apple retail store.

Umm, that seems pretty clear to me. Do you think they would suddenly take the MBP off that list after they update the line? There would be absolutely no reason for them to. The only thing that would do is piss off the people who are waiting.

I was flying about a month ago and I borrowed a Macbook to use see if I liked it (I'm used to a Powerbook). I was watching a movie from the HD. After I was done watching I picked up the Macbook to put it away, but as soon as I did that I noticed that something smelled like burning plastic. I ran my hand over the tray table and realized the heat from the Macbook had actually started melting the table.

I have read that Macbooks run hot, but that is ridiculous. Was this just a bad Macbook, or are they all that hot?

I've used several Macbooks and I've never felt one that would melt a plastic tray table. My only guess would be if you had the vent blocked by the back of the seat in front of you.

It's a free iPod for god sakes.
Sure it would be nice to get it, but don't have a cry that you might miss out on the offer if you wait for the merom notebooks.
If you so desperatly need an iPod go buy a macbook now and get one already.
Plus that would also mean you would have two portable music players. One with much more functionality.
I guess I just don't see the hype over them -_-

a bit off the loop...

good to see heaps o' newbies here. i just got promote to member i think. cheers

It is just icing on the Merom cake for me and a Christmas present for my sister.

As for all those responses about apple not upgrading the macbooks to mermon as well as the macbook pros. Well I always check out flyers and ads for manufacturers such as dell, hp etc around the time apple came out with the core 2 duo. Dell if anyone is right on top of it immediately. They always have the new better processor in there at almost the same time. So whats to say that apple wouldn't upgrade the macbooks cause the inspiron 6400 is not only in the same price range...its actually cheaper and has the core duo in it at around the same speed with 1gb ram etc. When the mermon chip is out the will most likely put that in the medium end consumer dells as well. If Apple wants to keep up with the competition for speed they gotta keep putting in the new processors. :)

I'd look mighty funny jogging with a Macbook straped to my arm.

I am trying real hard not to buy a new laptop, there is nothing wrong with my PB 15". Meron would really get me to start loosing sleep, and Leopard on Meron will get me in the car on the way to the Apple store. NOOOOOO

When next month?
Sept 1st or Sept 31st?
September 12 Paris Apple Expo Keynote. :)

Multimedia, you sound quite confident that Merom Macbooks will be out on September 12th of there abouts. I really hope you're right because I've been holding back buying an Apple laptop for almost 9 months now...
Three years ago Steve Jobs addressed the Paris Apple Expo to introduce the then revolutionary Aluminum 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 with FW 800 and USB 2 for the first time in any mobile Mac. Who from Apple will be giving the Keynote this year has not yet been announced. But the timing of that event combined with the arrival of a very large shipment of Meroms reliably rumored to be at hand in early September leads many of us to believe that will be the time and place for the new Core 2 Duo MBP and maybe even the Core 2 Duo MacBook as well.

BTW I scored a 2GHz Dual Core G5 PowerMac at Fry's for $864.26 today. :p It's a miracle!

Two more 2GHz cores for only $432.13 each.

i need to buy a new laptop for uni starting next month. Should i wait for any newer versions of the mac pro or just go with the existing models? Will it be worth the wait or just minor difference? So far the only thing that has caught my attention is the 64bit part.

A quicker roll-out really would ease my mind, since that hopefully shows that Santa Rosa will be equally swiftly doled out.

Merom
802.11n
Blu-ray
Leopard
HD screen
7 hr battery for bare min. use

Thats the sweet spot. The last two would be icing on the cake... that would be wonderfully sweet from the blu-ray...

but hey... I think that will really show that apple is on the forefront of technology ... the EXTREME EDGE...

Yeah i love those ideas. combine that with a nice black more durable case than the soft aluminum. dents way too easy!!

also,

I just don't see Macbook getting the upgrade to Mermom so quickly. doesnt make sense. they need to differentiate the models more. also the core duo's are getting lower in price. so it would mean a nice price drop, you could combine that with the new intel integrated graphics chipset. could work out nicely for budget buyers.

that said, i want the macbook pro with HD bluray capability with the highest end graphics chip possible for laptop. hoo-ahh!

OK, Here's a lineup for you guys, rather (extremely) hopeful however.

Tuesday 15th: Macbook Pro or iMac get updated

Week After: The other gets updated.

Paris Expo: New Mid tower- smaller Mac Pro with Conroe, possibly C2DE, pwnage GPU :p and space for 2 HDD and a Superdrive, plus 4 ram slots. And completely upgradeable.

Few weeks later: New iPod, Macbook and Mac Mini get Merom

Macworld: The whole thing starts again with 4 core Clovertown and Kentsfield :D

Still hoping for the iMac Ultra with 512MB x1900, 3.2 C2DE, 4RAM slots and 23" screen. Which may or may not be released. Surely either this, or a similarly spec'd mid tower must show up soon to fill the gap for gamers like me, and other people like me (Solidworks Rulz) who need a fantastic GPU, but don't need quad 3ghz CPUs, whhen a single Conroe (Extreme?) would do the job just as well, and for far less cost.

Anodized MBP's

Black Anodized Aluminum (oooohh, make mine brushed) would be freakin' sweet!!! And with the black Ipods and Macbooks... never say never!

For months now I have been writing on different threads about the 'very practical' possibility of anodizing the enclosures of APPLE MBP's. It can be done in ANY color and cheaply. Maybe it should be offered on preorder, charging a small amount for it...?

Anyhow, the advantage is, that anodizing not only gives you a color of your choice, but also hardens the surface of the metal, making it even more scatchresistant.

I think, the problem is for APPLE, that not everything is metal. For instance, among ohers, the faceplate surrounding the keyboard, trackpad and speakers is made of PLASTIC!!! NO, it is not aluminum!
Why on earth did they do this? Cost?

Oh, and by the way, I am not only waiting for the MErom upgrade, but also for the 800MHz frontside bus.

:D

15th> I was thinking the 22nd is PERFECT for a MacBook Pro update, or at leates 29th, this way theres a 2-3 week diffrence from WWDC and Paris.

And wasnt Merom suposed to be the 22nd?

No, Apple is leading the competition now, sorry. The release of the MacPro just proved two things: Apple machines are at the top end of the scale; and Apple machines are cheaper. A comparable Dell is much more expensive.

The same will happen for Merom notes.

But, but... I'ts all OLD HARDWARE now! It's not Xe/Mer/Con! It's even older that that ancient POS, Yonah! Why did you waste your money on something that can't even run any software anymore? :D

Typed on a soon-to-be-obsolete-and-useless MacBook.
