Core 2 Duo Coming To Apple MacBooks Sept. 16?

File this under R for "Rumor", but another Mac site is speculating that Apple will release updates to their laptop line come Sept. 16. The annual Paris Expo could be just the time for Apple to stick the recently released Core 2 Duo processors in their MacBooks and MacBook Pros, joining Toshiba, Dell, and Samsung in the upgraded notebook party.

Keep in mind this is just a rumor, and nobody knows whether Apple will do this or not. But if you can wait on your laptop purchase until the 16th of September, it's probably a good idea to. – Jason Chen

Don’t Buy An Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro Just Yet
August 29 Richard Ozerman
If you’re currently in the market for an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro—maybe you’re going back to school soon—don’t buy one just yet. Apple’s holding its annual Paris Expo on September 16, where they traditionally announce new products or upgrades to their old line of products. Rumor is, the same Core 2 Duo CPUs in Toshibas and Dells is going to hop in bed with the MacBook line as well.

If you can hold out for another two weeks, we advise you to do so. If you can’t, you can always buy a stock MacBook in a week and return it if there’s an announcement in Paris (if it’s under the 14 day limit). Built-to-order MacBooks can’t be returned no matter what.

We can all guess about timings, though the recent article says sometime during the Expo, not a date. (My guess in my first post here is on the 16th as MBP upgrade time, and here's to hoping that there's more than one announcement).

I thought the more interesting was Phil Schiller's words (VP of worldwide Apple marketing). I'll paraphrase:

It's not uncommon for new products to become obsolete within months, Apple computers being no exception. (Aug 06 WDC)

I guess you can read into it and give possible examples, e.g. a hint to MBP (which was last released January 06?) or the use of Core 2 Duo Merom mobo's vs Santa Rosa coming out in ~5 months. That and a tacit acknowledgement perhaps of how using Intel means that Motherboards, memory, chipsets, CPUs upgrades/releases for the various Apple computer lines are all going to be coming more in line with Intel releases?

Utilizing Core 2 in notebooks,is going to be really important ... in notebooks and thin desktops

Thin desktops anyone? This to me means either a wobbly upright tower(less likely), or a pizza box design, rather than a small box.

The correct order...?

Why would they give the Macbook that but leave the iMac with the original Core Duo? Doesn't make sense. I would think all three would get it or just the Macbook Pro.
Indeed. Apple will introduce the Core 2 Duo into the MBP and iMac at the same time. The Mac mini's upgrade to just to Core Duo across the range (and a minor speed improvement).
The MacBook's upgrade to Merom is less likely to happen straight away.... unless Apple thinks it's prudent to get it out for Students going back to college.... which they're probably too late for now anyway.... so I'd say Apple will upgrade the MacBook for Xmas :)
I still feel that Apple will introduce a "Prosumer" level Mac based on the Core 2 Duo (Conroe) CPU. I like the idea of either a cube with the same foot print as the Mini, or a DVD-sized unit (same height as the Mini but double the width).... obviously with IR and FrontRow :D

This will depend on their allotment of Core 2 Duos and their sales. Intel is still manufacturing Core Duos and is parceling out the Merom chips to manufacturers on a rationed basis, so Apple may not have much choice about which systems go Core 2 Duo and which don't. It will depend on their contract and relationship with Intel.

Hmmm. For some reason, I don't see this happening. Apple worked for years to simplify its product line. Remember how bad it was previous to the return of Jobs? Performas make me quiver - in a bad way! :)

It was worse in the past. But I don't think adding ONE model will confuse consumers. Right now there's a huge gap in the line.

While I'm not in the market for anything more than a MBP right now, I definitely agree with this. I can certainly see myself wanting or needing something down the road that could fit performance-wise between a Mini and Mac Pro. Whether Apple has plans to release something like that, who knows. It seems to be something a lot of people could benefit from having though, especially considering there are tons of PC configurations that fit this model.

A Mac Mini Pro would be nice.:)

Oh yes they can. When they are defective! :) The Gods must have been looking after me on this one. I ordered a new Macbook Pro in early August. I didn't know about the possibility of a Sept 16th upgrade. Well, the MBP I ordered turned out to be a lemon. Since it traveled between me and Apple Care for two weeks trying to get fixed (it never fully recovered), Apple agreed to honor te 14 day return policy and issue me a full credit. Sweet. Now, I'm hoping that new laptops come out in mid-septembet - and life is good.

I want a mac pro in a macbook pro case, i have a powermac but need something a little quicker which is portable!

they really need to change the mbp hdd to be the same easy access one that the mb has.

This is one of the changes in the case design that many are hoping for. It seems preposterous that the macbook would implement this feature, and the pro version wouldn't at least adopt it in the next revision/upgrade.

That, and the hope for a black aluminum case. Though I find this less likely. Still, that would be the one I'd probably choose if it became available. :)
