The Apple Japan store still shows a March 11 shipping date for all MacBook Neo colors in the base configuration. Apparently they have enough supply to handle the demand.

Admittedly, the sticker price in Japan (¥99,800) for the base model is not as lucrative as the $599 asking price in the U.S., probably because of the devalued yen. It’s comparable in price to what the M1 MacBook Air was selling for at launch.

Still, it is nearly the end of the school year in Japan, so there might be some demand there that will drive sales in the upcoming weeks.

My ordered Neo (512GB) is to be a bare bones public transport traveling device. Apple's Image Capture will off load images from the Leica Camera SD card and transfer to either the iCloud or an external large capacity SSD device. No big deal to do a hardware reset prior to border crossing and reinstall on the other side.

I thought about getting one of these.

What I don't understand is why Apple couldn't include an option with a backlit keyboard for say... $50 more?

I think many will have buyer's remorse with the Neo. They'll realize 2 years down the road that they can't install the latest Mac OS and they can't see their keyboard at night.

I ordered a silver one @ $499. One of my use cases is to run my editor/librarian synthesizer software (korg) during live gigs. The synth handles the actual audio processing, so the companion software has virtually no minimum requirements.

It will also be nice having a basic “coffee table” computer again. I’ve tried using an iPad for this use case for a while now, but its software (plus bad balance and form factor with keyboard cases during literal lap-top use) remains frustratingly hampered for certain things. Can’t wait for this!

I think I’ll always own a large MBP, but I really need a small laptop for working on travel and you can’t beat this price for the specs you get. My iPad is largely used for entertainment and I need more functionality.

I think this thing will sell boatloads tbh as a secondary device or entry level Mac for those who don’t want to spend a ton. Not surprised it’s so in demand.

Looking forward to the NEO! Will compliment my MacMini very well. Primarily, for basic things that won't require much horsepower but gives me that Mac portability I've been slightly missing. Tried the IPP with Magic Keyboard, just not a fan... pure consumption device for me.

Look, just because literally every new Apple design has turned out to be a brittle terrifying unusable mess doesn't mean Apple can't luck out at least once 😉
Still have a launch day Late 2008 (first unibody) 15" MacBook Pro that works flawlessly, also have a launch day M1 (13") MacBook Pro with the same (total lack of) problem.

Really nothing that revolutionary in this device to worry about.

My work consists of a lot of windows in Word, Excel, Chrome, Preview, etc. I have had 1GB of RAM on my computers forever. I would be fascinated to see how well 8 GB would work for my workflow. Probably could handle it well.

Other than pink, which they seem to have none of, Walmart has all colors and configs for the 11th.
No supply issue whatsoever there at least.
Good to know.

I am considering one of these for my Mom who is having more issues with the modular nature of an iPad and detachable keyboard.

I want to see one in person, but don't think she will want Pink so I should be good there!! 😉

You a Costco member?
That'd be who I would buy from, as their policies on returns/support seem even better than Apple themselves (unless one buys AC+)

256/Silver will get a big boost in demand as soon as school districts start making bulk purchases. Considering that most school districts run on a July 1 - June 30 fiscal year, summer should see increased demand for the delightfully generic silver model, as they're not going to want to see students competing for (or getting jealous over) particular favorite colors.

Of course, as others have said, the current delivery times say very little about current demand, as we simply don't know the color breakdown of the initial production run.
Nah. Schools are locked into the chrome ecosystem

Do we actually know either way?
How many have placed an order for each option, how many of each does Apple have ready to ship. Where are these numbers and with daily updates? I suspect — only suspect — that demand is good because … because … because the price is low.
We do not "actually know either way." However anyone who thinks that a Mac laptop at those price points will not sell well is what we used to call "NTQ," not too quick.

Although very unlikely, certainly the Neo could turn out to be a lemon [pun intentional] in real-world usage, but that would not affect initial sales. Initial sales will be solid.

I know you guys value my opinion. So...

With the caveat that I haven't seen them in person:
Citrus > Blush > Silver > Indigo

You're welcome.

Classic marketing 101. You have a new product and you're publically enthusiastic about it, but in private, you're not sure whether it will sell well or not. Solution: reduce availability. If your product sells well, this will create an artificial sellout craze. If your product doesn't sell well, you can still claim you sold most of your inventory. In both cases you can always ship more products later if need be (and boast about it: "Selling like hot cakes! More on the way!"). It also allows you to make the momentum last.
Nintendo and Sony often use this age-old tactic when a new console comes out.

I preordered and ended up cancelling my order. While it's a cheap enough system for me to comfortably use slowly adapting to MacOS, the 8GB RAM ended up being a major limiting factor. While it's simple logic how people shouldn't wait year after the next, but the rumors of the A19 pro (thus 12GB of much needed memory) and fun little gimmicks like the touchscreen coming to Neo will just make me resent myself for not waiting a bit.

History teaches us not to wait based on rumors. You might have to wait longer than expected, especially with Apple. Get a MacBook Air with the specs you want, without waiting. You can get a refurbished one if you want to pay less.
