Apple's low-cost MacBook Neo is compatible with the company's new Studio Displays, but its output will be scaled to 4K resolution at 60Hz.

Apple confirmed the compatibility and output limitation with 9to5Mac.

With pricing starting at $1,599, the regular Studio Display runs at 5K with a maximum 60Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the all-new 5K Studio Display XDR is capable of up to 120Hz and pricing starts at $3,299.

Apple calls the refreshed Studio Display "the perfect companion to Mac," but if you were planning on using it as an external display for a new MacBook Neo, there are other options available at significantly lower price points – USB-C 4K displays from companies like LG, Dell, and Samsung, for example.

If you still have a Mac with an Intel chip inside, you're not going to want to pick up one of the new Studio Display or Studio Display XDR models either – neither model will work with an Intel-based Mac.

The ‌MacBook Neo‌ has two USB-C ports, but only one supports DisplayPort 1.4 for connecting an external display. To use an external monitor, it must be connected to the correct port, which is the USB 3 port located closest to the rear of the device. The laptop does not support Thunderbolt either, so you can't daisy-chain multiple monitors.

The $599 MacBook Neo‌ and the new Studio Displays are available to pre-order now, with availability beginning on Wednesday, March 11.

The Neo's A18 Pro - a glorified iPhone chip - can handle macOS, Terminal, and Xcode.

Meanwhile, the iPad Pro with an M5 chip can't do Terminal or Xcode and is at best still stuck with “two apps side by side”

Gee, I wonder what the true bottleneck is.

Of cours it's compatible, but with 4K instead of 5K resolution. Most Neo buyers won't buy a screen that costs 3x more than the laptop, but nice to have confirmed that they will work together.

Thinking about this.. what would a A18 Pro Mac mini cost?🙂

I like the price and all, but I guess storage is a subjective matter. Just need 1 tb for the regular stuff like music library, documents and photos so even a 2 tb drive isn't a luxury depending on your needs. Not criticizing the Neo which is great value, just wishing their ssd options weren't so expensive on MBP and Mac mini... looking at like 4 tb options at least. And no I don't feel like voiding my warranty and risking unstable situations or bugs from software updates to install a third party ssd in my Mac mini. If you need space and want to be safe, you have to overpay Apple A LOT.

I can understand the SSD debate on Mac notebooks because yeah, connecting an external sucks. But for my basement Mac mini hosting Plex? I grabbed a new old stock 2.5” 4tb Crucial SSD on eBay for $250 and it’s been aces for the purpose.

I think it pretty unlikely people would be purchasing a $3300 Apple Studio Display and a $600 Mac.

I could see if someone has an existing 2022 Studio Display already and want to get this Mac for their kid, they’d want it to work with any existing monitor sitting on a desk.

Still. Knowing how my daughters use their district issued Chromebooks and personal iPads? They’ve never once wanted to connect an external display. Same goes for my wife. She’ll sit right in front of my 40” Dell ultrawide working on her Air’s 13” screen… with zero interest in connecting the thunderbolt cable 2 inches away. In fact, I told her “your battery is low, that’ll charge it” she got annoyed her display extended to the panel 😆

My bro is a corporate attorney. Same thing. Work issued him a fairly nice 32” panel for working at home 2-3 days a week. It’s unopened in a box under his grand piano collecting dust. He just uses the 14” screen on his Lenovo.

Same goes for actual content like our Plex movies. Some of my encodes are from ripped DVDs I made in the early 00s from Netflix. I can replace the files with 1080p Blu-ray encodes so they look better on a 4k 70” tv but my three girls don’t give a crap. To them? They’re happy as can be watching a 480p rip I made in 2005 with pixels the size of golfballs. Often I replace the 480p file with a 1080 or 4k encode if they haven’t finished a movie because plex saves their place… I don’t think they realize it looks so much better when they finish it, maybe they assume AI upscaled it 😆 🤷‍♂️

Apple understands this type of user. Nerds don’t.

Xcode on a Neo with 8 GB RAM? Probably the worst idea ever.

Why would someone spend 500 dollars for a low end laptop (that's nicely built don't get me wrong), and then drop over 3,000 dollars for a monitor for it?
Ostensibly mom or dad has a very nice MacBook Pro they’re using with it and want to make sure their kid’s Neo also works on it to occasionally do homework, maybe watch a movie.

But yeah, most kids never bother with external displays. It’s a generation that is used to 6” phone displays. To them a 27” monitor is almost a bizarre notion 😆

I'm sort of just laughing at the prospect of a Studio Display hooked up to a GimpBook.

It's like worrying about parking your Ferrari in the carport at your apartment in the bad part of town.

Not much different than the current apple tv (which is just an iphone chip in a box).
The reason why I don't ever see this launching is that the lack of I/O on the A18 pro might become an even bigger problem if you must connect an external keyboard/mouse/display (not sure about this since I have never checked how internal keyboard/trackpad/screen are wired to the laptop)
Would be interesting if someone could try to hack MacOS onto an apple TV in the future.

It would be kind of wild if a Mac Pro 2019 W6900X with 4 Thunderbolt ports (albeit TB3 but still certainly better than USB3) won't work with the new displays while a MacBook Neo with it's iPhone GPU and single USB3 port can (albeit 4K60).

Especially since the intersection between buyers of the MacBook Neo and the new displays is ~ 0 while I can imagine there are some people who have and plan to keep their 2019 Mac Pro for another 2 years but want to buy a new monitor that they could take with them to their next computer. People don't always buy their full rig at once but ladder up components as technological advances come to market at different times.

So they're not buying the monitor for the neo but their MBP and letting the kids use it too. That's different then buying a neo and a XDR monitor while at the apple store. Also the idea of pulling out the MBP to plug in the neo so they could use the monitor is unlikely. Most parents (including me) would just have the kids use the MBP or more likely the kids will be using the laptop on the chair/couch/bed.
