and let me guess: they aren’t labeled
The best thing they could have done and should have done is just putting one port on this thing, a lot of uneducated people on this kinda situation are going to be flooding message boards and the Apple Store because their device won't work in one of the ports.

Sometimes Apple is amazing. Other times it is obnoxious. I remember the MacBook Air with a single USB-A port. Yes, a single port. And for an expensive laptop. Apple, why do you do such horrible things? Even move being the most rich company in the planet Earth. No excuses. Such greed is not good.

Brilliant, a laptop for the masses and you can’t tell the ports apart. I maintain this is not a Mac laptop; it’s an iPhone laptop. It does not have a Mac soul, but rather, an iPhone soul, and thus should not be considered a Macbook, but rather, an iBook. Ah, you say, but the ghost in the machine is MacOS. Which version, I reply; 26? And can it upgrade to the previous OS? QED.

the disappointing part for this macbook neo is that it weights exactly the same as macbook air, it should be as light as the previous macbook 12-inch that makes it real portable to carry around.
13 inch for this new macbook neo is good, becos to be fair previous 12-inch macbook the 12-inch display may be a little bit too small. but if becos of that, it weights more then not worth it. i would rather to have lighter weight while maintaining at 12-inch.

1.23kg seriously not so impressive.

but other than that, the specs are more than sufficient for anyone who needs it for basic web browsing, video watching and productivity work.

given the education savings, it is perfect device for school kids to own this too.

USB 2.0 is inexcusable. That is really old technology. No Thunderbolt, ok, but USB 2???

It's very excusable. Maybe Apple should have thrown in another USB 3 port (and some sort of indication about which one was faster would have been good to do), but what percent of people buying these computers will use the USB ports? 20%? 10%? Of those who do, what percent will be copying large files and will notice any speed difference? The last time my high school aged children had to use anything USB-related for school was maybe 6 years ago. Everything is "cloud" based now. This is perfect for most elementary through high school students (and frankly, most college students).

My wife has a MacBook Air. The only thing she ever plugs into a USB port is a cable to charge and occasionally a printer (that's a little finicky over WiFi). That's it. She runs a business and a lot of volunteer work from that laptop.

I have a MacBook Pro. I almost never plug in anything to a USB port.

I'm not suggesting my experiences are valid for everyone, but this device is targeted towards students and whomever else just needs a basic computer that works. If you need something more complex, buy the more powerful and complex computer. If you need more than one USB 3 port and can't manage with a dongle or a dock, this isn't the computer for you. Buy a MacBook Air. If you want a bright colored computer like these, buy a skin for your MacBook Air.

I wouldn't have such a big issue with this if they were marked. The fact that you cannot physically tell them apart is terrible. Plenty of people will use the rear port to charge, and plug in their USB 3 flash drive to only get USB 2 speeds. Not the end of the world, but certainly not ideal.
Apple doesn’t like to clutter things with useful information. On PCs and peripherals they often put SS (super speed) next to USB3 ports but that is an English language biased solution.

Apple could also etch a 3 next to one and a 2 next to the other but that requires people to know what that means.

Or they could have given it a silver ring or something. Like the red dot/ring on cellular watches that everyone hated. But a silver ring wouldn’t be obnoxious.

To me it feels like an iPad soul with full macOS and a true Magic Keyboard.

Like this is what the iPad Air and pros should be when paired with their Magic Keyboards.

The original 12" MacBook has one USB-C port - still in use by a family member until I can persuade them to consider Neo

I just purchased, and canceled, two of them. First knee jerk was the base model. Then I thought, I’ll really be pissed if I’m paying monthly, not to get the 512 model. I don’t need touch ID because I have my watch. But when I found out one of the ports is USB-2, I was upset, and cancelled again. I also was dismayed that it’s the exact same weight, and basically the same size as the MacBook Air. It’s even a bit thicker!

I was hoping for a 2017 MacBook reimagined with an updated processor.
