Why? The Neo isn’t going to just up and die on you. It runs better than any other machine in its price point, even with 8GB of RAM.

Personally, I’d buy an Air. But this device at this price point is shockingly capable for regular people.
It's ok, the Neo it's ok, the point of the article is to make people realize that there is a refurb m4 air and why you might wanna get that...

I gave the example of a student, therefore the Neo begins at 499.

I also said in my case the Neo is a first Mac for my daughter who is in high school and has struggled with iPad + keyboard to do anything.
I myself use a MacBook Pro.
This isn’t about affordability so try again.
Well then get the air, it will be nicer and will help to do more things than on the iPad... The iPad is very capable and should be able to do everything the Neo is made to do.

One thing that an iPad can't do is run MacOS software. And some people don't need a higher spec laptop for daily use. Plus some are on tighter budgets.

Ok now I’m convinced you’re just trolling.

I have to agree since just about every post he has made about the Neo has been negative and telling everyone they should buy a MBA instead.

I get it, the Neo isn't for everyone. So buy what suits your needs and don't worry about what other people buy. And there is no need to be so negative about other peoples' choices either.

First, if you already have an iPad with keyboard, it's a bit weird that you need a Neo? Like just why a Neo? Ok you may. need macOS for some apps but the apps are not made to work with the Neo... Neo is for basic usage...

And like I said IT'S OK TO BUY THE NEO if you really can't or don't wanna pay this extra money... I just feel that there is a ton of people buying the Neo without even knowing the m4 refurb air, the Neo is now out and we know it's limitations... It's serious talk now...

Don't underestimate the iPad, also the Neo is not really promoted for that so I don't think that many buyers are doing that...
You let me know how Erlang compilation goes on the iPad.

The Neo is absolutely being promoted as a fully functioning MacOS laptop. It's people like you who are spewing all this garbage about "only for basic use." You may not have very advanced uses for your hardware but that's a wetware problem.

Actually you are wrong on that. I need amateur radio related software that only runs on MacOS and none of the software requires a lot of memory to run.

An iPad with keyboard might work great for some but it is definitely not a laptop replacement when you need software that only runs on MacOS.

And in my case, I can't afford a new MBA since I am on a fixed income. Another reason for going with the Neo is that I was able to use my Apple Card with 0% interest installment payments. You can't get installment payments on refurbished devices.

Have a nice day.

Um, this forum is a Mac forum - so it's likely most members here already have a MBP or MBA or both.

I have both and still getting the Neo (2 of them today).

Neos will be travel devices that I can use for fun and some personal productivity like games.

4 decades of owning Mac - and working in IT - yes I know the limitations of the Neo.

If I wanted to take my work MBP and MBA along, I can but I'd prefer to leave work data and the expensive costs associated behind.

There are videos showing the Neo opening every single app on the Mac then editing a 4k video showing that the 8gb of ram is going to be fine., people need to actually use the computer for a few days before making silly assumptions. I think a few people will be eating crow in a few weeks once these machines get into more people's hands.

So many people just missing the point.
This isn’t supposed to be a 5+ year Mac, it’s supposed to be a basic Mac that gets someone through school or - if no specialist computing demands - college. With that in mind, it will last 2 or 3 years just fine, then the user will be ready to ‘graduate’ to a MacBook Air or Pro.

The Neo also remains affordable for schools to buy in bulk, you cannot expect them to wish upon a star that sufficient stock of Airs will land in the refurb store.
Yeah. Its like an intelligence test. We can see who is failing.

I don't want to overly defend 8GB RAM as being optimal because it is not. I specced 32GB in my M4 Air!

But the Neo isn't meant to be a budget fully capable laptop. It is meant to be a budget entry level laptop. This is a device for email, web, light MS Office, and may be Netflix/YouTube, and it's perfectly good at those tasks.

My wife runs her entire life on an M1 Air with 8/256. Her SSD is basically empty and her machine does everything she needs it to. She is a writer and has written a complete book series and handles all her business activities on the Air. Not everyone needs a high-specification device.

When it comes time to replace the M1, I'll steer her towards the Air, but I really think she will want the Neo because of the color choices! And you know what? It will be the right choice for her. Her laptop is simply an appliance to get things done. As long as she can do those things, she doesn't give a hoot about RAM!

Travel with MacBook, erm that's another post, you can go check my comments on it !

Imagine you keep this Mac for 5 years, it will be hard to resell for a good price...
Personally, I have never considered the idea of reselling a device as a factor in my decision to buy one. I guess it's one way of maximising the savings or (minimising the expenses) but a the price point of a Neo you're already doing it. You're literally paying less than $120 per year, less than $100 per year if you have student discount.

Meanwhile if you get m4 refurbished MacBook Air ... this Mac will easily go minimum 5 years for a student and maybe more ! After that it will be more easy to resell and you will be able to afford a new Mac !
Realistically, how much you will you be able to sell a 3rd hand Macbook Air M4, 5 years from now? Half the price you pay for it? I doubt it. How much is a Macbook Air M1 worth today (a twice-used one)? That doesn't make you more able to buy a new Mac in 5 years time than saving money buying a Neo today.

300 the MacBook Air m4 is my guess, actually just going into prices of MacBook Air m2 today, I see them at 500 where I live which... They are 4 years old mate...

Final review here, I cannot recommend the MacBook Neo and here is why :
Have you used the NEO? If not then you are just guessing what the NEO is capable of accomplishing. I know several people with Macs that are more than 5 years old, still doing the job, with shockingly 8GB of memory. As for college, the liberal arts could get by with an Etcha-Sketch. Hard science courses will need more, and will purchase more. But for many students the NEO I suspect would be a very good, and useful resource.

This one I don't think so, as far as I see you may wanna get a 16gb Mac for that...8gb might be limited !

I haven't used the Neo yet, but talked with people who used the Neo, also I have an m3 mba with 8gb of ram at home and I'm an EX user of m1 MacBook Air too so I know how the Neo works !

Just dont run chrome or microsoft stuff. This computer is NOT built for heavy applications. This laptop is geared for schools and educational purposes. Apple sells laptops for heavy computing (Macbook Pro). Discussion closed.

One has to love people bashing something when they have absolutely zero first hand experiences.

Love the OP posting such a worthless topic.

As Peter Christian's 5 Percent would say: "Someone who complains but does nothing about their issues can be called a chronic complainer, whiner, armchair critic, malcontent, or a person with a victim mentality or learned helplessness."
