MacBook Neo Is the Dumbest Name Ever

The movie is over 25 years old now, so most young adults probably won't even get it or care.

I think Apple wanted a three letter word, similar to Air or Pro.

MacBook Neo sounds like the laptop equivalent of naming your child Blade or Maverick after watching too many action movies.

It sounds like you might not know that Neo simply means "New", "Revived", "Changed"... as in neoclassic or neolithic, etc...
To give you a pertinent example: "Some people on this forum are clearly language neophytes".

Perhaps you could watch fewer action movies yourself?

I would say that the dumbest name ever is "iPad". The "i" in the name iPad is not too bad, but "Pad"? "Scrubbing pad" maybe, or iTampon in French? 😇

"Neo" sounds like the name "iPad" is being ditched by Apple. It could have been named "iNew" to start another trend of Apple iThings to buy.

We have a linguistics professor among us. What does it matter what something actually means if most people think it means something else? If a marketing name causes confusion or needs to be explained, then it’s probably not the best one.

Frankly it is a bit the same as suggesting that most people think “Air” is a type of Nike footwear, and therefore Apple should not use it for its products as it would be confusing.

I don't mind the name and the target market will buy it irrespective if named Neo or Fresh, etc.

I suppose it could have also been named Mini or SE to place it in the product range for those of us that are used to? Just guessing their market research went for something appealing to the younger Gen in tertiary education.
