I doubt it's damaged inside even though there's a scratch on the box. It sucks the box is damaged but I guess, is it worth it to get it swapped through whatever channel you purchased it from to get a perfect one is the question you're needing to ask yourself perhaps.

Do you think it will be damaged? Do the boxes protect the Mac?
The boxes are designed to protect their contents so there is close to no chance that the Neo inside has sustained any damage.

If you do wish to return it, do not open the box. Bring it back to the Apple Store and ask for a replacement.

That would trip up my OCD a bit (I collect and keep my Apple boxes), but I think it'll be fine. They're usually surrounded by very rigid cardboard-type material, and they rest on a paper "tray" of sorts. If you're that nervous, open it up and look. Pretty sure you can still return it if it's unused and damaged. 🤷‍♂️

I think the more appropriate question is why did you buy it two months in advance? That's two months of warranty you're burning off sitting in the box. My recommendation is to return it and buy it closer to Mother's Day. Then she'll have the entire warranty remaining and you'll address the scratched box question that started this thread.
