Macbook = Not as Good, Macbook Pro = Good

The higher screen res is really only necessary if you do graphic design or other photoshop work, since the mb isn't a gamer's laptop. Settle on the polycarb case and no backlight and you save $700.
Actually, it's not just the resolution that I feel is necessary (I don't do graphic design nor photoshop, I simply like it that much more for doing my case briefs, moot court notes, among other law school things), but the independent graphics card is a must for me as well. I'm a gamer, and when I am at school on those long nights, or just want to relax and play a good FPS, the MBP is the only way to go, period. Also, it's not just the polycarb case and no backlight; it's an overall feel. Last, it wasn't a $700 price difference between the two...in case you didn't read that part of my post, I got a 2.16 ghz, 2 gb, 100 gb, 256 vram 15'' MBP for $1,425 shipped. If you can show me a $700 price difference between that and any working Macbook, I'd love to see it.

This is true. The mb is simply a poor gaming laptop, just as bad as all the windows computers with Intel integrated graphics. The $700 is the price difference between the nearly similarly equipped $1299 mb (new) and the $1999 mbp (new). The mbp may feel more solid than the mb, but compare the mb to a similar windows laptop and you can feel how much better the mb is. William Mitchell, no?

Yeah, I was just saying that it wasn't a $700 difference for me, more like $200. You familiar with the Twin Cities? Not many people besides from around here would know about Billy Mitchell!

Some of the refurb mbp's are good deals, as the lesser cost increase over the mb is worth the extra features (esp. the dedicated graphics in my opinion). Since I'm not a computer gamer, I'm happy with my mb. And yes, I'm at St. Olaf, and have a friend at William Mitchell. Small world, eh?

Since when have laptops that cost $1,000+ more been built better!?!?!?!? Crap I missed that memo!

You'll find that there are laptops out there which do cost $1000 more and are utter rubbish. I'm talking about windows laptop here regardless of manufacturer. None come to mind either but you know what I mean.

I chose the MBP over the MacBook for basically one reason: the keyboard. I didn't really need the bigger screen, sexier aluminum enclosure, X1600 or slightly faster CPU...I just couldn't get over the strange feeling of the MacBook keyboard. And I spent a couple of hours at the Apple Store comparing keyboards too (kinda pathetic, I know...).

After the first few days of using my mb, I thought I'd have to return it, as I also disliked the keyboard. I was planning to use it for another week, to see if my opinion changed. It did, and now I dislike typing on anything else.

I'm still getting used to it. I can live with it, but my typinh is not as akuret as it was.

I don't understand why some people hate the MacBook so much. I'm writing this on a MacBook right now. I love this computer, it's the best I've ever owned.

We're just perfectionists - Apple has made us that way ;)

Edit: And I do love my MB

See, I'm in the other boat. I LOVED the Powerbook keyboard, and I've been trying to convince myself to like the Macbook keyboard over the past few months. I've done a decent job at it, because I find the keyboard alright, just not as great as the Powerbook/Macbook Pro keyboard. The Macbook keys feel like you're typing on a kid's toy, the PB/MBP keys feel like you are typing in luxury, on a machine worth it's hefty price tag. Just personal preference I guess...

Being that the MacBook was never supposed to replace the 15.2 inch PowerBook, I don't see the problem. They're supposed to fit into different markets.

MacBooks aren't truly bad, they're not meant to be more than they are. Even looking at those machines that are meant to run Windows around $1000, they're similarly focused with integrated nVidia or ATI graphics hardware.

Obviously, the MacBook Pro line is meant to be more, just like the PowerBooks.

One size does not fit all.

OP,

Thanks for calling my three macbooks "manure". Sorry I couldn't afford something "glorious" and had to settle for something so unworthy.

Wow, I hope that comment was in jest, or else you need a hug...or Xanax.

For all future reference, the title of the thread was simply attract attention and get a discussion going; it wasn't meant to cause any fellow Apple-followers to fall into depression during this holiday season.

Compare the mb to the iBook line, which it did replace: to say the mb is much improved is still an understatement. MacBook: huge speed increase, better graphics, better screen (arguable), better keyboard (also arguable), similar case -- but also in black, built-in iSight, extended desktop, cheaper, and the list goes on.

Two different machines, for two different purposes, at two different price points, aimed at two different markets. ;)

I've a C2D MB for past few weeks, and really have no issues w/ it. My mom bought a CD MBP this summer, and had to return it, and has some slight probs w/ the 2nd one. I've used hers, and I will admit that I do very much like the keyboard [feel & backlite] of the MBP better. I'm not a gamer in the sense that others are - I've a X-Box and a Wintel box for that, as needed. I'm more into scientific material and dig photography, so the size and such of the MB is quite good for my needs. Only main dislike I have w/ her is the sharp front edge - there is NO need for the molding to be that sharp. :(

BTW, what lmalave said earlier, for the most part...

Hahaa. Don't worry.

But it is a little insulting to be calling my macbook that. :p

It does its job well, I believe. People complained about the integrated graphics hardware but it was newer and more advanced than the 5 year old Radeon Mobility 9200, right? The display is better somewhat but definitely has higher resolution.

The keyboard must be better. I haven't seen any MacBooks in the stores with keys missing.

It would be nice if they could afford to put a better graphics solution in a version of the machine because it seems a really nice size.

The Intel GMA 950 is much better than the Radeon Mobility 9200. Though I'm not a gamer, I do wish Apple would add a graphics card as an option when ordering a mb. Integrated graphics are the weakest point of the mb, and this would definitely lead to an increase in sales.

Just to warn you: The last (RevE) PB that you traded is 1440x960. The MBP, 1440x900, so you are still going to lose 60 lines of vertical resolution (the height of the dock for example).

It may not sound much, but the Rev E powerbook is a noticeably more useful size than 1440x900. I know because i have a 17"iMac that is 1440x900 to compare it to.

You also lose the perfect 3:2 aspect ratio. (Perfect for fullscreen viewing of DSLR photos without borders, that is.)

IMO widescreen displays are only more useful than 4:3 displays IF they have enough vertical resolution. 900 lines is a bit tight (IMO).

my 2p

Uh, yeah. This is why I initially went for the fastest iBook ever made the 14" 1.42ghz -- which btw outperformed my 12" 1.5ghz PB because of it's 1.5gbs of ram compared to the PB's 1.25gb maximum ram. Anyway, the screen height is an issue for me, not width. If people are into film, why are you on a laptop with your movies? I need the screen height to see the full length of my Word pages. That's why I'm loving the old 17" lcd studio display over the new 20" Cinema display with my powerbook and mac mini. I foolishly sold my 14" iBook.

And I have no idea why Apple thinks wider is so much better. I agree with the above poster saying that losing vertical lines of resolution is a problem -- it actually turns into a scrolling-down-the-page time suck problem for me.
