Which size MacBook Pro would you recommend to use exclusively on the couch?

I know that most people (?) prefer the iPad when relaxing on the couch but I've always preferred the MacBook for light gaming, browsing, etc.

I've used a MacBook Pro 13.3" for a long time and I'd like something larger but the MacBook Pro 16" is quite huge.

My gut tells me to get the 14" but the 16" does have the huge screen...

I guess it depends on the size of the couch and whether others are sitting on it at the same time you are using your MacBook. Factors like how you sit in your couch and viewing angle and ability to type are important.

Both are usable on the couch but the 14 is by far the better choice for long term couch use.

I have a 16" (came from a 2014 13") and it's fine on the couch. It's tad bit bigger. We're not talking about going up to a 32" monitor here. You'll be fine with whatever you choose. Get whichever one works best for you and your situation.

I do a fair bit of web browsing from the sofa with my new 16" on a cushion. It's the perfect size as far as I'm concerned.

I have the 16. If you're lying down with it propped on your stomach/legs, the weight kinda pushes into you but it's fine I guess. Not only the screen size, but the width of the base helps keep it supported. But still the screen size wins it over for how I use it. I usually have a smaller window to the left with either Youtube or Twitch open watching something and another window for general web surfing.
Otherwise I use it for editing photos.

About three feet away from me, there is a 16", right now.

It is sitting on a table - which is about the height of the sofa, the depth of the MacBook, and a little wider. The person who uses it just leans forward slightly and uses it. There is a small extension which provides a mousing area to the right of the keyboard.

But for me, who tends to have my machine on my lap, a 14" would make more sense.

I've gotten to use the 13", 14", and 16" at home at various times through the last year. I use the laptop often on the couch while watching tv (football games, movies, etc). I found all three sizes to be pretty similar on a couch.

Right now I am using the 16" on the couch with no problems. It's very comfortable. Now if you were talking about airplane trays, travel with suit cases, etc., I would answer differently, but for couch use, I think all 3 sizes work well.

I used to have a 16 but as soon as I got a 13 I was convinced it's a better size to use on the lap. Now I have the 14 and have no regrets. To me the 16 is better placed on a desk, not your lap

I had both the 14" and 16" and I always start my mornings watching footy and checking the interwebz.

On the 14" I had to switch it to larger text b/c I had trouble reading the text. You also have less room to rest your wrists on the 14".

The 16" doesn't feel too big or too heavy at all. If you always have more than one window open the 14" gets claustrophobic real quick.

I think you'll be more than happy with the 14" based on what you've described. Here's my use case/considerations and I'm still deciding between the two.

For years I'd used the 15" sizes (my last one was the 2019 15" i9) and it was such the sweet spot as far as size. Not too heavy to carry if I needed to; big enough screen for my aging eyes, and gave me enough screen real estate when I'm coding in XCode and need to work on a storyboard with a code window open for dragging to tie variables to visual elements, etc. Seeing a document next to the simulator as I'm writing documentations. My use case is 98% couch as this is my personal laptop. I have a large 34" wide monitor at home but that's my WFH desk and after a long day at work on it, I have no desire to sit there longer.

For the past year I've been using the 13" M1 MBP as the i9 15" was so hot & noisy I wanted to put it in the bin. To help me decide I bought both the 14" and a 16" base (fully specc'd 16" isn't coming til Jan) and am trying them both to see which one works better. Note that battery size isn't an issue for me because they both have way more than enough battery available for me. Thermals aren't a factor as the 14" is a M1 Pro. Travel likely not a factor, as I don't travel more than a few times a year in normal times and I'll either leave my personal laptop at home if it's a work trip (take the ipad instead) or I can take my 13" MBP if needed. If I'm traveling for personal reasons only - I would only need one laptop and could take either 13" or the other one depending on the type of travel.

Here are my personal pros/cons:

16" Pros
  • Love the screen! Can fit everything I need on it, can increase the size of fonts large enough to compensate for my crappy vision and still not feel crowded. (13" definitely felt a bit crowded/small).
  • The monitor part is 'taller' so I don't have to bend over quite as much to see it (this is really minor though)
16" Cons
  • Weight & balance. If I sit with my feet up on the coffee table and the laptop on my thighs - I can feel the weight more than with the 14". If I sit cross legged on the couch it fits well that way, but it feels like it's going to tilt away from me onto the floor way more than the 14" does.
  • Weight & balance #2: It's a bit more effort to pick up/put down with one hand from the side table or coffee table where I store it when I'm off doing other things. I'm always forever getting up/down so this seems to happen frequently!
  • Height - in some positions the laptop blocks my view of the bottom edge of the TV :)
14" Pros
  • Still really light weight - feels balanced in all couch sitting positions.
  • Screen larger than the 13" (13.3 vs 14.2") and brighter.
  • Physical form factor is just barely larger than the 13" MBP but you gain so much more in screen, processing power, ports, etc.
14" Cons
  • Side by side windows aren't really doable for me so I can only have one main window up at a time unless it's something really simple like a Terminal next to a Browser. I can't use it in the "more space" resolution as that makes things too small for me to comfortably read with my vision.
  • Some sites/apps feel a little cramped when I up the font size to something that's really comfortable for my eyes to read.
  • FOMO on the 16" :)
I think if I get the 16" I'll get used to the weight and balance of it. If I get the 14" I'll adjust to the size since it's larger than the 13", but probably silently curse a bit when I'm doing something that the extra 2" of screen would have been really beneficial for.

I wear glasses when I use my 14". Do you think it would be better increasing the font size? Never tried it before. I'd be interested it what setting you use so I can try it out. Thanks.

For the 16" make sure the added weight does not cause more wear on your couch armrest and the added display height does not block the TV.

I’m very nearsighted and wear progressive lenses. That means that my glasses are rarely correct for what I want see. o_Oo_O For my phone I’ll often use it without glasses - but have to hold it 3” from my face. ?Making the font size bigger helps compensate for that somewhat both on my large monitor and my laptop.

Buy one of those bed trays that are sold to serve breakfast in bed and put it over your lap. It's a perfect height for working on a 16" without needing to balance anything. As far as I'm concerned, only the 16" has enough screen for good side-by-side or even, occasionally, a 3 split screen......esp. with spreadsheets.

I just use a sofa cushion. Works perfectly.

I use those bed coffee table and the 16 goes on that. Perfect for resting on bed. As I am sitting up on the bed while the 16 is on the table, I have no issue watching my bedroom tv mounted on the wall.

Get the 16. You will get used to it and your eyes will thank you.

I sit with my MBP 16 on a recliner with a piano bench to the left. I leave the MBP on the piano bench and sometimes a plate of food or a cup of coffee. The couch isn't anywhere near as firm as the recliner and I like the support of the recliner. I do sometimes lie on the couch but I don't think that it's a good way for me to use a laptop. Maybe an iPad.

I have the new 14" and 2019 16-inch model, and 14" is much more comfortable on the couch and pretty much everywhere. Decided to go with 14" because 2021 16-inch is even bigger and heavier than 2019 version. The screen real estate is smaller, but it doesn't feel THAT cramped, but then when I prefer to do any serious work at my desk, connected to a 32-inch 4K display.

I never had problem with 15" MB Pros on couch so 16" (presumably with same dimensions) should be ok.

It depends what 15"... 2021 16" > 2019 16" > 2016+ 15". For me the difference in weight and size was noticeable when going from 2017 15" to 2019 16".
