The 16" is comfortable on my lap. Especially on a recliner and the fact it rarely feels warm/hot.

Seems like most folks prefer the 16”. Any 14” fans out there?

I am. Having had both I find the 14” much more comfortable than the 16. On the couch it’s way more maneuverable and easier to position.
I loved the screen on the 16 but ended up selling it for the 14 as I commute and am not always at a desk.

Anyone here do a lot of work with Excel? I’m coming from a 2015 MBP 15” and am leaning towards the 16” because of the screen real estate. I often find myself with 2 spreadsheets on the screen and a 14” seems cramped. Anyone have similar experience?

For those who bought both to try, is the 140W power supply much bigger/heavier than the 96W?

Yes. The 140W brick is massive. It's almost twice as big as the 96W brick. It's also the only one of its kind (USB-C port output that can do 140W) so you can't replace it with any more compact aftermarket charger.

Here's some comparison pictures, not quite twice the size and you can charge these new laptops with any usb-c charger, you just won't get fast-charging unless you use MagSafe and obviously charging times will vary depending on what you're doing at the time and how powerful the charger is.

Side by side, multiple windows, you can’t beat a 16” screen.
It’s def much harder to juggle multiple windows / files on the 14”.

Any laptop is cramped for big spreadsheets, especially with two open.
27" screen is OK. :)
My point is that going from 14" to 16" will not remove the crampiness, just alleviate it slightly (show one more column on each spreadsheet?).
You really need a separate monitor (or two) to be most efficient with large spreadsheets.

I use a 4k monitor for spreadsheets and it's comfortable. I sometimes view spreadsheets on my MacBook Pro but work on them from desktops.

Nothing can beat a bit monitor for working with Excel. Even on a 16" MBP I end up having to play about with the zoom setting and tiling them vertically/horizontally to try and view the info I need.

I do think the 16" screen works well when you have a few different programs open at once where it benefits from having them on screen at once rather than swapping between spaces. Often if I'm making changes to website code or uploading things via FTP while wanting to refresh the live site to see if everything is going OK, that's a scenario where I find it is much easier to do on the 16" rather than 13/14" screen.

I guess I should have clarified a little. What I meant was if I had to work on a 14" or 16" (and didn't have an external monitor at the moment). Do both work about the same? Or is the larger 16" at a noticeable advantage?

Well, 16" is 14% wider than 14". So with 2 spreadsheets open side-by-side, you will see 9 columns on each instead of 8.
9 columns is noticeably more than 8 columns, but is not a game-changer. There may be other advantages of the 14" (such as portability) that outweigh that advantage.
It also depends if you will often use it with a monitor, or if you will seldom use it with a monitor. If the latter, then I would go for the biggest you can (16") to reduce the cramping as much as you can. Things like the format sidebar (in Numbers) and frozen columns can consume a large portion of the screen area, leaving less actual working area in the spreadsheet.
The default resolution (scaling) on these MBPs is quite good for squeezing a lot of content on the screen, but some people may find it uncomfortable for long periods.
I personally prefer to work with each spreadsheet in full screen in separate desktop spaces, and flip between using 3-finger gestures. On the 14" a full-screen spreadsheet is fine. Two side-by-side not so much. A 16" will be better for side-by-side, but not much better for full screen.

I’ve had my 14” for more than 2 weeks now, and I’m a fan.

I am coming from 2019 16-inch, and I’ve used 15+ inch models for the past 15 years. I also had a MacBook Air for about 2 years a decade ago, but got back to 15-inch when Retina MBPs came out in 2012.

This is the first time in years when you can buy a high spec MacBook in smaller form factor, so I’ve got 14-inch M1 Max with 32 cores, 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD.

I’d say I didn’t expect it being such a big upgrade from 2019 i9 model. It’s much faster, dead silent and can live pretty much all day on battery for my use. And it’s much more portable!

Yes, maybe the thermals are not as great as the new 16-inch, but it’s so much better than 2019 model than I don’t really care. I haven’t heard the fans yet, and they turned on maybe 2-3 times in 2 weeks. The only reason I know that is iStat Menus, otherwise I couldn’t hear them at all.

This is the first machine that can build a project in a VM when connected to external 4K display without spinning fans! My 2019 was making jet noises just by running a Teams call!

I owned My 16 for about 2 weeks before seeing the 14 in person at Best Buy. The 14 felt tiny with a cramped screen sitting next to the 16. Sitting next to an M1 Air, which I own, the 14 was not noticeably bigger in size or screen, but taller where the menu bar resides. I’m glad I went with the 16.

Can anyone help? My 14” MacBook Pro says it’s connected to my Wi-Fi but when I go to open a webpage it says “you are not connected to the internet “? I’ve tried restarting the router and restarting the MacBook. I’ve tried forgetting the network then adding it again but still no good. Any ideas? Thanks. My iPhone is connected and working fine.

Monterey bug. I get it about once a week and just reboot the MacBook Pro.

Tried that. Still not working.

I'm on 12.0; haven't upgraded to 12.1 yet.

I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with having multiple networks in the house as the WiFi jumps around while I'm using it.

Does this happen with other networks or just at home?

Not been out today so not been able to try another network. Works fine tethered to my iPhone though.

All sorted. The MacBook was "paused" in the mesh router settings? I'd paused all devices, then unpaused all but for some reason it didn't unpause the MacBook. Such a simple solution. Only took me about 6 hours!

No question the 16 is better if trying to work with 2 spreadsheets at the same time. I use an external monitor most of the but on the occasions I did not the 16 was much better for having multiple apps open and accessible.

+1 here for the 16. The 14 felt like a 13 to me

I would recommend the 16-inch model to use on the couch. Better to accommodate on the lap. Larger screen, which is helpful, given that it will be farther from the eyes then if the laptop were on a desk.
