Still using Chrome, but unplugged the external monitor and looks like CPU dropped down to 50C. Didn't realize it would make such a big difference, but I guess that makes sense. Thanks for the note GuitarG20. Glad I checked that.

I have a SSD, which is what I originally attributed to the near silent machine. Also GuitarG20, I would imagine you have cooler idle temps due to have more space inside for airflow?

You're welcome! I think the real reason mine runs cooler is because i force the integrated card all the time, unless i'm playing a game or using skype video calling... to test, i ran it at idle, forcing discrete, and it was more like 47C then.

Yeah I may have to start doing that. Still think the 2.3ghz was somehow running cooler with less noise, but this was before my heat in my apartment was turned on, so maybe room temperature played a role. Or maybe I'm just more focused on it now...who knows :)

there's no real reason to use the dedicated card unless you're gaming, or using the TB port... I would highly encourage running integrated as much as possible.

I agree with this completely. Even if you don't run games or anything, one should have gfxcardstatus installed because little applications like Twitter call for the Dedicated GPU to be used and I notice a significant decrease in battery and an increase in heat.

Also to note, I installed 8gb 1867 hyper X and it increased my cram from 384 to 512 for the integrated, but on the more important note, the increase in ram speed really has significantly improved the performance of the intel 3000.

So got another MBP to compare and while the fan speeds and cpu temp seems to be the same, I do notice at idle that my original one is a bit louder. Almost seems like there less insulation, is the best I can describe it, as the sound is just less muted. With a SSD drive, not entirely sure what sound I am hearing. I assume it is the fans? I would just keep the new one for peace of mind, but the downside is that the new one, the keys feel a bit more clickey and the left hand side of the screen when closed, is not flush with the body.

I know I'm being overly picky, but I tend to keep my computers for a long time, so like things to be "perfect."
