Sounds like the base £2500 is calling you. For me it was terrible value for money. I got a maxed out 2015 for £2300 and could not be happier. For the money saved I got a 34" 2017 monitor that solves any display issues :)

Also no machine from apple is from 2017, some are as bad as 2013, that's just the way it is. That's Tim for you.....

As for a MacBook Pro spinning up its fans......I've never owned one that did not. Design form factor over practicality , and I've been working with macs for the last 10 years at work. Be it a MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Pro, they howl when actually used for content creation.

Sorry if you bought a machine from apple for 4K content...why? I genuinely ask. And I genuinely ask cause you bought a machine with intergrated graphics.....and are complaining about it getting hot pushing such content.....chip that is for you is kaby lake, its integrated graphics are for 4k from my understanding. Yup your 2015 cpu, already outdated in 2015, will struggle....get hot and spin the fans up.

Same will happen if you try gaming on it.... a surface also overheats btw

My i7 2012 RMBP 2.3ghz does 4k just fine...

2012...

5 years old...

its Chrome - zero to do with the hardware.

On all of the MacBook Pro(s) that I have owned, Chrome has only been good for one thing. Inspector. If safari had an inspector that was as decent as the one in Chrome, I could switch full time and never look back.

Chrome is terrible for battery life on the MbP; doesn't matter what model, or what year. On my 5k iMac it's less of an issue of course.

I'm more referring to when the CPU gets pushed, they spin up and howl. It does not take much. I have a 2012 and 2015 retina, same result, any cpu/gpu intensive tasks and high fan noise, part of the problem is the crappy job apple does with CPU/GPU paste, . I've repaired my 2012 and nice impreovement.

It's very much hardware as the cooling in these is dependent on the aluminium chassis and as its so thin, fans kick in quick.

I think the principal reason why Chrome is a resource hog is that it is security optimized. It uses at least 2 shadow memory copies to mitigate against corruption-oveflow-control-based attacks such as "use-after-free", exploiting vulnerabilities. This makes Chrome more difficult to target and hack and is therefore potentially more secure. A potential exploit would have to simultaneously target multiple copies of the shadow memory and real memory with identical write pattern that is also simultaneous, which is practically very difficult if not currently impossible to my knowledge.

I think there were some hacking competitions targeting various browsers and Chrome came in on-top the last few years over all other browsers including Safari, Firefox, Opera, Edge and Explorer. That said, I use Firefox.

It sounds like for your usage a Kaby Lake MBP would be your best friend...

Hey guys,

I've been using imacs since 2010 and have always been happy and I already have one imac late 2015 fully maxed out 5k. It gets hot and fans kick in when i watch or edit any 4k videos. But the screen kind of makes up for its short comings.

I just bought like new macbook pro 2015 15" base model with i7 and iris graphics...but I am seriously not happy. The screen looks pale as compared to my surface pro 4 and the ipad pro 12.9 they all have similar kind of ppi ... first the screen is pale, the sound is just ok and it feels slow and fans start going with full noise as soon as I start to play a 4k video. I highly doubt this will be good for any kind of 4k editing.

Any idea how to make this fan noise go down?

This is rubbish really, its a £1899 machine Apple?? seriously?

I really like Surface products now, they look good and dont have any crapware so they run fast.

Main issue here is that intel chip in your 2015 rMBP does not have hardware acceleration for HEVC/VP9 codecs. (youtube uses VP9.) Skylake has partial acceleration and Kabylake has full acceleration. Therefore surface pro 4 with its skylake cpu will be able to play youtube 4k video with its anemic 15 watt cpu but will throttle or heat-up similarly. MBP has to render the video in software hence needs to spin the fans up even though it is massively overpowered.

The reason some videos are available for 4k playback and some are not in safari is because the uploader specifically uploaded a h.264 version of the video and safari supports it. VP9 videos don't show up in safari. Haswell i7 in the rMBP has support for 4k H.264 decode in hardware so the fans don't spin up.

To see which version of video you are playing, right click on the video, select "Stats for Nerds" and look for codec to verify.

You can also use a plug-in called h264ify on chrome to only show the h.264 version. This extends the battery life when using chrome due to your computer being able to decode h.264 natively. Also your computer will stop screaming.

Now about the screen. You have been a victim of the venerable screen lottery bs with apple. Apple uses multiple vendors for the displays and they do vary slightly. Lg screens are slightly pale but have better whites/brightness. while Samsung screens have better contrast/saturation.

Only thing you can do is go whine to an apple Genius Bar employee(if it is still in warranty). They might exchange your display but you might end up with a similar display. I personally prefer the LG panel but I have a 2015 with Samsung panel which is fine too. However, none of these are going to be as good as the 5k iMac screen. The 5k screen is an lg panel too but it has a wider gamut and possibly better contrast ratio. They do a photo alignment process (calibration I guess) to make it really accurate.

2015 rMBP uses a screen with 2012 technology so it will never be as good as a surface pro 4 or an iPad Pro.

If you want a better screen the best way is to look for a 2016 model. It has the most beautiful display in the market. Only thing that beats it is an OLED tv.
