This is just like the iPhone 11 Pro, more battery life by making the device heavier due to bigger battery. Seems less innovating and more thickening. Looking forward to real innovation integrating Intel's new 10nm architecture into the Macbook Pros to bring some real innovation and battery life improvements.

If .17 of a kg is going to cause your spine any extra strain that would lead to physiotherapy bills that would send you broke, buy a smaller computer. Wait for the rumoured 14". Or, I don't know, go to gym to strengthen yourself to be able to handle the extra strain of half a kg.
Let me guess, you are a 18-27 y o teenager with little to no real-life experience. Correct?

yeah...this is a pro computer. if its too heavy get a macbook air. the computer is for getting work done effeciently, so a new thermal design is what qualifies as innovative in a computer.

what is YOUR definition of innovation? a touchbar? also the battery life was improved in this computer.

People will find reason to complain about just about anything. Why is the marginal weight increase a problem?
Of course...remember 3 years ago.."apple stop making a PRO device thiner and lighter"
Now we have its too heavy, my back, oh dear my back

Making this thing thicker/heavier, it allowed Apple place more battery, bigger heatsink and bigger fans
If you want lighter mac, you can go with the 13" MBA
I would understand the complaints if Apple made just 1 macbook..but there are 3 different models, the 13" and 16" MBP and the 13" MBA..lets stop complain and start choose whats the right device for us

And yet, the 2015 was bigger and heavier than the 16” just announced. Not a bad compromise IMO.

Ah, so you really are just trolling then.

These machines have fluctuated in size weight for years as innovation strode forward. Apple makes several options for you, just pick the right one and no more complaining, ok? For example, I used 13" portables since the type of work I was doing was in need of the smallest form factor possible. In recent years I could get away with larger weights and sizes *and* really needed full power for big photoshop files and video editing. Now I am using even higher res cameras and the extra screen real estate of the 16" is a big gain as is 8GB of GPU and 64GB of ram for those huge file sizes.

So when I heard the announcement for the 16" today, I quickly got the measurements and checked my sleeve, laptop case and all of my photo packs that all have compartments for a 2018 15" and the new 16" fits all of it!

See? Real world use says that what you posted above is not really all that valuable...

Better luck next time!

Bah, this "mpb everyone loved" is rather overused. Personally, I am happy that the 16" is closer to the 2016 design than to the 2012 design. I think that Apple managed to meaningfully improve on the chassis, without sacrificing the form factor. Looking forward to see the benchmarks. A bit worried about the keyboard, hope that the typing experience is similar to butterfly. Other than that, this looks like a very nice "large" MBP.

I think they pretty much got the best of the old and the new design and mashed it into one 🤗 About benchmarks there have been some up since yesterday but not enough for a stable statistical sample.
CPU:
GPU:

(I've no sense if the GPU result is any good or not -anyone know ?)

Only 40% of that weight increase can be attributed to the battery.

15-inch battery = 0.37 kg / 83.6 Whr
16-inch battery = 0.41 kg / 100 Whr

Here you are making the assumption the old and new battery have the same sturctural and chemical make-up. They don't.

I don't like the way the guy put it - but he kind of has a point. The difference between 1.83kg and 2kg is not a difference you can feel by holding each in your hand for example.

Well, the 16" and 15" 2015 weight the same and the weight difference between 15" 2015 and 15" 2016 has always been noticeable :)

With these things it often boils down to balance. The pre-2016 definitely feels heavier, as it it "chubbier". I can imagine the 16" feeling very similar to the Touch Bar model though, as it retains its slim build. My chief concern is whether it will fit into my bags :D

The 2012-2015 fit? If yes ,no worries

Here are the specs for both models:

15-inch:
Height: 0.61 inch (1.55 cm)
Width: 13.75 inches (34.93 cm)
Depth: 9.48 inches (24.07 cm)
Weight: 4.02 pounds (1.83 kg)

16-inch:
Height: 0.64 inch (1.62 cm)
Width: 14.09 inches (35.79 cm)
Depth: 9.68 inches (24.59 cm)
Weight: 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg)

Yes, the 16-inch model is bigger in all aspects, and also heavier. This is fine for many people, who do care more about the power than the size and weight. It seems really to be a laptop for media professionals.

It is not a laptop for me. At this point, I need something smaller and lighter. I carried around a 4.4 lbs 15-inch MacBook Pro (the retina one) for years, and it felt heavy. These days, I am leaned more towards the likes of the MacBook Air and similar laptops.

It’s interesting most of the previewers didn’t mention the dimensions getting larger, only weight/thickness - To give credit due, iJustine did (ironic as many on this forum critique that she isn’t a proper reviewer, her AirPods Pro preview was also the best).

Not that I have a problem with it being larger of course.

You mean can’t fit into the compartment for the laptop ?

What I mean is that after the 2016 came out, I could "downsize" some of my laptop bags to bare minimum (these are actually only designed to fit compact 13" but the Touch Bar 15" fits perfectly) — and this is where the major practical weight and size gains were won for me. A pre-touchbar 15" does not fit in my slim backpack, for example, and only barely fits into the messenger bag. Of course, it is not an issue with a larger backpack but one does not always have the option of carrying one...

Now I understood what kind of bag are you using. Ok, can you try to place your current 2016-2018 mbp and place something 1mm thick to see if it fits?
Or, if doesn’t fit..buy another bag or stay with your current one or buy the next 13-14” mbp?

I'm sure I will be fine :D

I have the mid 2017 15" and my main issue with it (apart from the keyboard of course) is the abysmal battery life (for a MacBook). If Apple can pull sth similar to the iPhone 11 Pro Max where the battery life is phenomenal, I wouldn't mind the additional thickness at all.
