Through the forums, it seems like there are quite a few specific hardware/software issues that some of the MacBook Pro 16" are facing.
What are the issues one should check for when receiving the MBP 16" ? And how would you go about testing them?
I'm awfully near to ending my 14 day return, and I want to check as many of the major issues as possible to see if I should call for a return.

I just want to make sure that I don't face *known* issues unexpectedly in the near future (when they can be easily assessed now) and end up wasting time having to keep returning machines, and wait for new ones.

Some of the major known issues I found are (correct me if I'm wrong) :

1. Crackling Popping sound
Test :
Abruptly stop playing music. Ex. close a tab while playing a video.
Discussion : https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ing-popping-sound-of-new-16-inch-mbp.2211902/
Fix : Some say its a hardware issue.

2. Kernel Panics / Random shutdowns
Test :
From visualinventor in the Apple forums :
  • Download Geekbench 5 (I used version 5.1.0)
  • Select "Later" when the dialog pops up about paying for it. You'll be testing in "Tryout Mode"
  • Look the the left of the program and you'll select "Compute" Benchmark
  • Select Compute API: METAL (OpenCL doesn't error out but Metal does.)
  • Select Computer Device: Intel UHD 630 Graphics
OR
"loading up a YouTube HD video in Chrome, full screen it, let it play for around 10 seconds, pause, close lid (keep it all open), let it sit 10-15 minutes, open laptop, crash."
Discussion : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/16-mbp-gpu-panics.2221004/
Fix : Hardware/Logic board Fix

Would you suggest any other major things to check for that would justify a return?

I'd suggest just using your computer. Most people have no issues whatsoever with them.

If you’re going to be looking for reasons to return it, don’t buy it.

@chabig, I've already bought it with the intention of keeping it. Thats not the point. However, some users from the forum have mentioned that their issues remain even after receiving a new unit with Apple Care+. And I just want to make sure that I don't face known issues unexpectedly in the near future (when they can be easily assessed now) and end up wasting time having to keep returning machines, and wait for new ones.

Apple says issue #1 is software and that they're working on it. Most people never notice it unless it's pointed out to them, as evidenced by the fact that it was first reported in 2018 but didn't attract much attention until last fall.

Don't think anyone knows what causes issue #2.

Some people are unhappy with the slow response time of the screen, another thing most people don't notice.
