I suspect that Apple doesn't have enough (or any?) motherboards for the 17" MBP. It's been out of production too long.

Plus, Apple never really intended to issue an extended warranty. Apple would much rather sweep everything under the carpet. It was only the very real threat of a class action suit--which had a high likelihood of succeeding, given all the evidence against Apple (which Apple was happily denying)--that forced Apple's hand.

Time will tell...

Chances are you're not going to get your original 17" MBP back. You're going to get a refurb. Although at this point, you might get nikhsub1's 17" back???

So you'd better pull your SSD out, and put the original SSD back in.

On my 2008 15" MBP with the video issue, Apple originally promised a free motherboard (this was years ago) but I received a $900 estimate the very next day, because I had 3rd party RAM and an HD that was supposedly failing (both of which are still working fine--it's my backup laptop.)

After a lengthy discussion with 2nd or 3rd tier support, asking Apple to justify going from free to $900, I asked them to send it back to me, and that I would put the original RAM and HD back in, and turn it around and send it right back to them, to qualify for the original free motherboard.

Whatever you do, remember to be unfailingly polite and even-tempered. You'll get better results--but you really have to be totally persistent.

Edit: what I'm saying is that Apple will do everything in their power to deny the repair, so you'd better take pictures of the screen, take it to the genius bar to get documentation, keep records of the people you've talked to, what you've been promised, the whole shish kebab.

Yea I made it a point telling the genius and pointed out the condition and told him the story from here He took pictures of my computer and so did I, he ran test on the MacBook everything was good until he ran a second test that showed the video card was bad ! Turn around time 3-5 days he said No Charge ! He said we're going to look inside for water damage and I said really Do You Think So ! But he was alright he was breaking in a new tech woman and showing her how to run the software on them and what to ask like the password to get in and so on, They do send it out to a third party for the work !

Now you've got waiting on pins and needles to find out how it all turns out!

Best of luck!

Hope all works well for you. I suggest getting a laptop cooling pad and using smc fan control to manually ramp up the fans. I am on my 3rd motherboard. Many have gone through 6 or even 8. There is no real fix for the problem. The design flaw will be in the "refurbished" machine. Best thing you can do is try to keep temps to a minimum. I use a nice laptop cooling stand and ramp up my fans to a min of 3000 rpms. This helps keep my operating temp with external monitors hooked up to about 46 celsius.

I use to use the smc controller on my other MacBook but I was always worried to over work the fans I think they're made for one speed and didn't want to prematurely burn them out !

I think 4 years for a video cards life is about right

I had mine repaired on the flat rate scheme for $320 in Sept last year.

It took 4 days and I got my same machine back, that went in with the 1TB SSD.

I have just recently got a refund as per the link in this thread that you didn't read too well.

Get gfxCardStatus and keep it selected to Integrated Only, and it wont get hot.

They emailed me and I picked it up and it was just like i left it off, They said they replaced the Logic board 2.4 GHz, Battery Indicator light and the bracket rear hard drive

they said cables were defective on the battery indicator !
Enclosure Mechanical/Cosmetic Damage
REP MBP 2011 Graphics /Multi

The price was $310.00 without Tax what it was when I brought it in ! So don't know what it would have been if I had to pay !

Not bad turnaround the 21st brought it in and today 23rd :)

You would have paid $310 plus tax for the flat rate repair.

Their service is very good.

I didn't realize but after a few days i went to do some changes in system and they had locked me out ! that said I asked for tech support to unlock it and they gave it free but they left me with lock home screen again !

Question I formatted my HD and came up with some of these same problems So are some of my system preferences held in the cloud ?
