That's a great idea!

That's a brilliant idea. Really!

Aww shucks

Any ideas on how this would work? Or do you mean if they turned it into some sort of touch-screen?
Would definitely be more useful (there where you need it, not when you don't).

The trackpad is already an extremely "smart" device. Just place an imaginary grid on top of it that divides it into 3 columns and 4 rows.

I'm not suggesting they make it into a touch screen that's blank when being a trackpad and then turns on and shows numbers when being a numberpad. Most people type without looking at the keyboard, it'll be the same here.

A touch-screen trackpad would have tons of uses, including this, but I wouldn't suggest they implement it solely for a numberpad.

Have you ever used one of those on your lap? You ether type funny or look slightly to the side. Cannot stand ether for long use.
If they do this then I do not know what to upgrade to from my g4
I cannot even remember when I last used a number pad.

Nice mock up . But it´s not really in touch with the design ideal.
You must know by now that anything not absolutely needed - especially when it takes up space or weight - will go.
This is not only how the history of Apple design has evolved, but also their special trade mark in comparism to Windows, and other companies like Dell and Toshiba. lt´s almost a style over functionality ideal.
Apple design has allready made us swallow camels like all ports on one side, no spare keys (Home, delete) on keyboard. Empty front, empty back. Et cetera.

I guess my point is: I like it as clean as it is, and I think this has now become one of Apples fortés with the MBU.

Hi all,

Was thinking it would be a good idea if Apple put a number pad on the 17" MacBook Pro.

Here's a quick mockup I came up with:

If the speakers were moved up the top, it would leave plenty of room for a number pad on the right.
Probably wouldn't work in regards to how the internals are arranged but I thought it would be a good addition.

Does anyone else agree?

I like it. I have always thought a numeric keypad esp on a 17" makes complete sense. Nice mock-up, could you do one with white keys, or even silver? :D

Also if apple had a BTO option then I would have bought it with numeric keypad every time. I have two already. Looking to buy another 17" and the 13" - matte when  releases it

Something like this?
Sorry about the bad quality, converting keyboard from black to white doesn't go so well..
I'll see if i can do something silver...

I saw a picture (Photoshop job probably) somewhere that shows an iTouch style touch pad where there current track pad is. It could even do video display duty, with that you could easily implement a number pad.

I don't think this is the one I saw before but it gives you the idea. See this post, scroll almost to the bottom.

Interesting. Thanks. I think this could would be great on the 13 & 15" laptops where there is not enough width to fit a physically key pad. The 17" MBPs however should have a real keypad

hahah that looks pretty rad to me! I just bought the number pad that came with the new mac keyboard. But I really like the idea!.

Don't really see any point in having a keypad. Can't imagine a bunch of accountants buying Macs just cause it's got a keypad. :apple:

I'd never buy a laptop with a keypad. It would mean the 'regular' part of the keyboard would be off center. Can't imagine sitting in front of that in a way that wouldn't be silly. ;)

Num Pad

Well I know for sure they lost pone customer. I wanted to buy one but NEEDED a number pad, and not an add on. It was a deal breaker for me. They should do it as a custom thing, pay a little more and satisfy the customer. The laptop I bought instead has the number pad and the shifted track pad. In my case I could do WITHOUT the track pad (hate it). Would trade the track pad for the num pad in a heartbeat. Not sure about the track pad as a num pad, a useful touchscreen would be cool, TONS of possibilities.

nice mock up. it seems kind un apple but hey im not johnny. anything could be up his sleeve.

Personally, I love the idea of adding a number pad to the 17", at least as an option. I am in college as an engineer, and I use the number pad on my wired KB (why apple got rid of the full wireless KB, I'll never know) quite a bit, and it would be extremely convenient to have one built in. Only issue I have is with the speakers up at the top, it just doesn't look right. They could just do the speakers how they do with the 13. And as far as the offset thing goes, I wouldn't use a 17" on my lap to begin with, so that isn't an issue.

I bought a Sony that had a numeric keypad. I thought it was a good idea until my hands needed to rest on the left side of the palm rest where the track pad was, to keep in alignment with the home keys. Never could adjust to that offset. So many manufacturers are going with this offset I pray Apple does not go that route either. Keep the track pad centered on the palm rest and the keyboard aligned accordingly.

Great concept. It utilizes space efficiently. There's only one thing I can think to add to make it even better (for myself, at least)...

*ducks at barrage from Apple loyalists*

Sorry, coming from a ThinkPad I can think of no better way to increase my productivity.:)

I really don't see what's wrong with the numbers where they are now...

Nothing is inherently wrong, just not optimal, which is why they would always remain in their horizontal position. For most, though, the checkered orientation is more efficient, and in the case of the 17" it would be a better utilization of the space on the inner surface (but that's just my opinion).

Trackpad

Have a trackpad running iOS with apps from the app store that you can download, such as numkey, (there will also be a preinstalled app for trackpad, and all kinds of other apps, like itunes coverflow!!!!!! (Sorry, it's the old macbook, just found it on the big e (internet))

Genious!!!

I love this idea. I wish all laptops came with a numeric keypad.
Sure you can go out and buy a numeric keypad usb, but for programs such as Pro Tools, not all the functions work as they should. I tried different numeric key pads and they all had the same issue. So, I just gave up and bought a mac keyboard.

I have a HP ProBook that SUCKS

I own a HP ProBook that has this setup and it is the absolute worst setup regarding ergonomics for a laptop. I am happy with the normal MacBook Pro setup and I wouldn't want to use mine any other way.
