Guys, I am really ready to just break down and cry. I went to the mac store today and I am so ready to switch. I really want to buy the pro but I know that if i don't wait till January hat the stars will align and steve jobs will someinthing huge with the line. I am writing this on a Vista machine that I am ready to throw against the wall in frustration w/ its loud fans and glitchy performance. I know there is no question or comment in it. I just needed to get some frustration out. I feel like I am about ready to burst.

I know what you mean!

For the last time, Apple is not going to put a 8700M or 8800M.

The 8800M uses too much power and generates twice as much heat as the 8600M.

The 8700M is just a slightly overclocked version of the 8600. HOWEVER, Apple clocks down the 8600M. They would just offer a higher clocked 8600 before switching to a 8700.

I'm in the same boat. I'm still stuck using my Windows computer til January comes around. I just hope they will add the magnetic hatch like the Macbook's and possibly the same keyboard as the Macbook's if they keep the backlight.

Another good reason to wait is to see if a LED backlit screen refresh fixes the yellowing issue we hear so much about.

Is there any rock solid news that there is a new macbook pro or a MBP update coming in early 2008? specifically at macworld?? I have been waiting on purchase one since leopard and am really getting anxious. Will the change to the MBP be purely internal or will there be any revamped looks, such as what apple did to the iMacs? Thanks in advance

god i cannot wait for jan 2008. My overheating HP laptop burns my left hand when typing. I hate it cuz the left side of the trackpad is very hot, so when typing papers i have to put towels on the comp. This thing i bought in 2006 sept... i hate you vista, you and your stupid internet errors, not allowing me to connect to the internet.

save some other poor sap from being annoyed to hell by it and just kick it down the stairs

:apple:=happy

.they just had a "speed bump"..why would it be another one?
that would certainly make people think less of apple.so uncool...

The recent MB update was a lot less than it could or should have been - things like the same CFL screen, the same Multidrive in the low end etc. etc. Apple are not averse to doing nothing when the opportunity is there to do something exceptional.

There are many many laptops out there in the £1k-£1200 range with BluRay or HD-DVD drives. But then, there are laptops that are as small as a Macbook, with better HDD options, and DVD writers, for less than half the price of the low end Macbook. The production of other fantastic machines out there at the same or lower price points has never stopped Apple from under-delivering. I'm increasingly convinced they'll do so in January.

There is no way in hell I would sell this computer to someone else. I want to spread hope around the world, not anger and despair. Instead I shall lock it up deep in some box filled vault next to the ark of the covenant from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I really think that the update will be like all the others.

Same Design
Processor Bump (in this case Penryn)
Graphics (ATI or nVidia??)
Hard Drive (user replaceable?? Don't think so, but you can could on larger sizes and faster RPM's)
Screen (LED on 15 and 17 with option to HD?)
Battery (longer??)
Everything else should be the same

My guess.

So I have been reading this thread and I understand that everyone is expecting an update in January, although everyone seems to think it may be something different. But what is the one thing that will make is so much better than the current build? Is Peryn going to be that much better? I am asking because I intend on buying a MBP for my husband. The current build seems really fast, am I missing the big picture? Or is really all about having the latest and the greatest?

advantages of penryn would mainly be better performance per watt, there are rumors going around that the performance boost will be around 30% and a bit better battery life
None the less I'm waiting for the next update since I don't need a MBP right away. If you ask me, the current build is plenty fast.

That is just fanboi speak.

What product in the Apple line is currently exceptional?

Go on, I will wait.

*crickets chirp*

There's your answer.

MacBook Pro ~ Aged old design, impossible to replace hard drives
Mac Pro ~ Lol! Enough said! 2006 technology dude!
Macbook ~ What so special about it? "Combo drive"? Huh? What is a combo drive? Do drives even come without "combo" these days?
iMac ~ Freeze of death, the new BSOD, but cooler.
Mac Mini ~ For the same money you can get a PC that plays games better than a MAC PRO.

iWoot - I don't know what you read when reading my words - but essentially, I was agreeing with what you've just said, and I meant the exact opposite of what ever it is you THINK I said.

Let me break what I said apart.

'Apple are not averse to doing nothing'

i.e. Apple are happy to do nothing.

'when the opportunity is there to do something exceptional'

i.e. when there is the hardware, the technology, to do better.

For example - the recent MB update should have eliminated the Combi drive. It's difficult to find a <£350 laptop with a Combidrive. Apple are charging twice the price for a machine with one.

My fear with the next MBP update is that the fact that there is new, affordable, available technology never seems to stop Apple using last generation kit with a high price tag.

I'd be OK if :apple: used the slight increase in the battery life by upping the clock on the 8600 and therefore keeping the battery life consistent and giving us a faster processor and faster video performance. OK, throw 256MB in the base model and 512MB in the high end model 15 and 17". :D

I only really want 2 changes to the current configuration.

1. 45nm Processors - Defiantly going to happen
2. 512MB Graphics - Should happen, if not dedicated even 256MB shared would do. With 4GB RAM option i don't think 256MB will hurt

I can't see Blu-Ray as early as January hitting the MBP but later.
Considering that the prices are rapidly dropping.

HDMI???? why would you want that, it is just a reconfiguration of DVI to include an audio stream.

I personally would love to see an 12" Ultra portable.... Unlikely to happen
I don't see how spacing would honestly be a problem, look at the MB it is 13". Take out the Optical drive replace it with a graphics card there would be ample space. Replace to HDD with a smaller flash based drive.

But i would be more then happy with the 512MB graphics and the 45nm Processor

I doubt there will be an upgrade to 512MB on the graphics. I think that machines with 512MB are still considered "gamer's machines," and Apple hasn't shown any interest in that market.

With the transition to Intel based processors more and more game developers such as EA are making games cross platform compatible.

And with High Definition monitors becoming a common thing, you need better graphics cards to support these high resolutions and do anything on them apart from basic tasks.

256mb are rapidly becomming outdated, even more so on 128mb's which shouldn't even be offered anymore on Pro models.

Look, I'm not saying 512MB isn't better or anything, I'm just saying Apple ain't gonna do it soon. They aim straight for the high-end professional notebook, not for gamer's notebooks.

Heck, most desktop machines sold still don't have 512MB graphics cards.

If anything....iBOOK G5 and POWERBOOK G5!!!WOOOOOO!!!!

BRING IT APPLE!!! NEED MORE HEAT!!! MORE!!!
