  • First, it was random glitchiness, then weeks later became sudden horizontal gray and white lines on screen, like corduroy, and had to reboot.
  • Now, can't even use it. Tried recovery mode, PRAM reset.
  • After PRAM reset, screen came up with short random alternating horizontal blue and white lines, and center logo was broken up. Then very soon after it turns to solid blue/gray screen. Then fan gets louder and MacBook restarts itself. Whole process is probably 2 minutes.
  • 3rd time doing this eventually resulted in same issue but with 2 inch black vertical line on left.
  • Is it a new graphics card i need, or whole new screen, or something else?
(I have pictures and a video of the issues)
Thanks for any advice.

A1286 is a 15" with a Radeon GPU that has failed. I had a late 2011 15" that also had a failed GPU.

Apple has an extended warranty program for affected units which has ended: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/20/apple-ends-2011-macbook-pro-repair-program/

Thanks but Apple has an extended warranty program for affected units which has ended: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/20/apple-ends-2011-macbook-pro-repair-program/[/QUOTE]
Close the lid and put it under a blanket for an hour while turned on and plugged in. Then try.

Are you joking or is this to reheat the solder in the card?
