HDD/SSD, I can see that. RAID-0... eh... maybe what the iMac's have like a SSD/HDD combo. SSD for programs, HDD for storage.

SSD Card Stick, probably gonna be a iMac SSD/HDD hybrid.

If the new MBP is a SSD/HDD combo- with SSD for programs, and HDD for storage, would it be faster, slower or the same as running a MBA with SSD attached to an external HD (via USB) for storage of photos, etc?

In other words, if you are already storing media on an external HD and you have a MBA, is that a faster feeling system than a SSD/HDD hybrid, or would it be slower?

What if apple makes the MBPs premium priced machines again, like, starting at 1399€ for the base 13" model? The 800-1200€ range is getting so crowded (MBAs, ipad 2, MB). Can't say apple would leave high school kids, cheap college students and email-checking-granmas without options.
The repositioning of MBPs would allow for standard 300-512gb SSDs. Also don't forget that SSDs prices will suddenly drop in 2011 tnx to 22nm flash chips. Kinda the summer 2009 drop tnx to 34nm chips. We're talking double the capacity for the same price tag.

I want to believe.
(in SSD-only 2011 MBPs)

Anyway i'd be just as happy with an iMac27-like hybrid ssd+hdd solution. I would call it unnecessarily complicated (for an apple laptop) but since it's already happening on imacs, it could happen on MBPs.

Hybrid Yes, but no way they will do standard 512 GB SSD in 2011. Go dream. MS will launch those laptop hunters ad again. Economy is still recovering.

Excited for the next MBP update!

I have a question regarding dates - when they announce it will it be available immediately? Online or in-stores?

Well actually a SSD/HDD hybrid would feel slightly faster. It uses the SSD for the boot drive, just like the MBA, but the external drive you are using is subject to usb speeds, while an internal hard drive has a direct Sata interface.

Is Apple having an event this January? If they are what will they be updating iPads, iPods, MBP?

As far it is known Apple is not hosting a January event (yet). Their next event however, should focus on the MBP, probably the iPad as well. But unlikely the iPods.

No answer yet, but there have been reports that the iphone 4 4G will be released any day now. Apple typically announces events a week before they happen, and the news will be all over macrumors and any tech site. the iPad and MBP are due for an update and while there hasnt been any data to back up an MBP prediction, there have been lots of reports on iPad part purchases and production orders by Apple that suggest a spring release date for the new iPad. The MBP release date is likely predicated on the release of Light Peak and Sandy Bridge, with the link I posted above shows that Sandy Bridge is already in machines and ready to ship. Light Peak has been rumored to be released in March, but there hasnt been much news on that recently. SSD pricing is also a big factor, but it I assume that Apple has negotiated a deal to get future market prices on SSDs right now.

When they released Leopard (OSX 10.5) Was there a huge spike in MBP unit sales? Wondering if this is a pattern by Apple... to always release hardware upgrades along with a new OS.

If that's the case then a hardware update won't happen until Summer of 2011 (When Lion will be ready).

I can't remember but Snow Leopard was just released in the end of August without a big event, so Lion won't necessarily be released alongside the MBP's. It would actually make sense for the new iMac to be released alongside the shipment of Lion as it would be in time for an update around August. Apple has never gone more than 10 months between updates of the MBP and they especially won't let their old MBP sit out on the market with Sandy Bridge flooding the market in 2 weeks so I'd expect an update by the last week of January unless Light Peak won't be ready until late March. It's likely that this trend only applies to iOS.

I agree... w/ ipad looming around for april release, mbp MUST get released in feb!!! PLeaseeee

ya know the more i think about it the more i think the new MBPs wont come out before April and maybe even May because releasing them as early as JAN or FEB would kill the **** out of the "newly" released Airs...ama i right or am i right?

Just sayin'...

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/29/intel-310-msata-ssd-knows-that-size-matters-fits-80gb-into-less/

P.S. I know no one is going to want a MBP with 80GB of drive space, but I think you see what I'm getting at...

It's funny I was just about to post a link to a different article on the exact same thing. I'll put it anyway because they have a good quote in there, but the diagram on the top of your article says it all: this SSD is small enough to fit pretty much anywhere, so they probably will keep the 500GB HDD and either slip the SSD underneath or create a new interior design with a small bay for the SSD. This allows them to keep the ODD on board for one more year. The biggest piece of evidence here is that the price of this SSD has not really dropped, so we could probably expect that initially prices will remain stable in the SSD market for the first quarter of 2011, forcing Apple to go with one of these 80GB blades with a 500GB HDD. I actually greatly prefer that set up because it allows them to put a higher end GPU or CPU in there, I dont need an SSD to handle my media and my library, system, and app folders combine to about 60GB so I can fit it on the SSD. My dream is that they go with a blade and HD combo and take out the ODD for a bigger battery so I can get a high powered i7 and a Nvidia 460m or ATI 6500m and still get 6-8 hours of battery life.

It will probably make sense release the MBP when the sales figures start to decline for the Air [I have no clue if thats already happened or when it will], but that could mean that the Macbook is gone [which I dont think has any place anymore unless its price is cut to $800] and the 13" MBP will clearly be distinguished from the MBA, making the MBA remain prevalent. Dont forget the looming iPad 2 will significantly cut into MBA sales as well, probably moreso than a 13" MBP.

Apple wouldn't use that.
Apple would use the (longer, narrower) Toshiba SSD sticks currently used in the Airs. They can fit everywhere too.

I like the toshiba sticks better and they already top at 256gb (see MBA 13").

And Toshibas can easily be scaled if needed. 128GB could be double sided like the 256GB to make it 1/2 of the length

Damn, right when I get into this whole buying MBP thing on come on here and find out a newer version is coming out soon but no one knows when. If everything goes through with this local retailer, I may be able to purchase a NEW MBP 13" the current one for $900 OTD. Do the resale values of MBP hold pretty good. I've never had a Mac computer, only Iphones and I know those hold well. I can purhcase now and lose maybe $200-$250 the most down the road (6 months or more) I wouldnt mind that much of a loss. What do you think?

Could they double side it and still be able to keep the HDD without increasing the size of the chassis?

If Apple was able to fit double-sided SSD in MBA, I would be surprised if they couldn't do that with MBP. It's only like 2mm difference, maybe even less

This thread made for a pretty cool read. I'm still sporting my 2 ghz 13'' macbook from like 2006/2007 and aiming to upgrade, but i'll hold off for the updates.

As a normal consumer (in university), i'd say the idea of a 13'' mbp without a OPP is bizarre. Non of my friends get why you'd get an mba unless you were rich. Nobody thinks of getting an external, they'd wonder why not to just put it in the computer. The MBA is seen has a luxury item. I'm sure that mindset is changing though. And if that's the way apple goes, then I think it'll still confuse some people.

I use my drive a lot for watching DVDs and burning music to itunes. Especially if i'm on a plane, or when i'm away from my home and i brought movies to watch. I get why it wouldnt' be used for some people, but i'm not sure i'd get rid of them. I use mine a lot. All music, movies, programs are sold on discs unless you're downloading digital. For music people, that sucks cause the quality is worse, and i don't want movies taking up space. Why would i want something that needs an outside drive to use them. It's easier to pop on my bed and watch a show on DVD's than have to rig up an external. bleh. That makes it harder for people i'd say.

I really want to get a MBP 13'' in the updates, i hope it still has its OPP.

I feel the same. I plan on getting a 13 inch when the updates hit. I hope they keep the Optical Drive. I understand the advantage of getting rid of them, but i think digital media is not prominent enough to warrent the removal in this update. Maybe in the next update, in 2 or maybe 4 years.

Really hoping Apple releases new MBP's sometime in January, hopefully right after CES. Was planning on buying a fully loaded 15" i7 Sandy Bridge model and an iPad 2 if they are unveiled.

The toshiba SSDs are slower than intel or sandforce based drives though, and there are no sandforce or intel drives in that form factor to replace the drive with :-(
