Usually, apple remains one generation behind from other manufacturers in technological areas like that. This is what I believe. Maybe other users here can tell what happened in similar situations in the past.

It may offer the new superduper specific technology (firewire in the past, lightpeak today and so on), but no widespread advances in new technology like new cpus, new graphic cars etc.

This is why I believe they will not use quad-core sandy bridge.

I understand why you don't think they will use one, but there have been quad core mobile cpus for a few years now. I think they will have to use one sooner than later, and according to other discussions here some of the quads are low power enough to work.

I don't understand when people say that the 13 inch will lose the SuperDrive... The 13 inch has already lost the SuperDrive it's called the MacBook air. The 13 inch mbp Is the consumer version of the notebook so it will most likely keep the SuperDrive. Most likely apple will give the option for the 15 and 17 inch to drop the super drive.

I personally want to see a super powerful Macbook Pro with a quad core CPU, discreet blazing fast graphics, 10 hour battery life, no optical drive, and under 4 pounds.

Yup, I'm dreaming big!

I do find it humorous that some people think the only difference between the Macbook Pro and the Macbook Air is the SuperDrive.

"If you don't want an optical drive, buy a Macbook Air! Sure, I'll just completely ignore all of the other benefits of owning a Macbook Pro over a Macbook Air!"

****ing signed.

I'm not even sure if they're trolling anymore...

Regarding the topic, I predict that this release will compromise my sanity. I will never play this rumor game again... maybe.

My predictions:

The 13" MBP will lose the optical drive to make room for a bigger battery as well as a dedicated GPU.

The low end 13" MBP drops and becomes the new MacBook. The top of the line 13" MBP becomes the default.

15/17" will both keep the optical drive. It will be like "Want an optical drive? Buy the 15 or 17 inch model". Like when Apple removed the express card slot and kept it in the 17" only.

I honestly thought I was the only one for dropping the optical drive. It literally takes up more than 20% of the space, you could squeeze a 360M GPU in all that space. I'm personally a gamer, so I could care less of they kept a C2D in there but FOR GOD'S SAKE get some better graphics!

Im not sure they can remove the ODD just from the 13". I mean the macbook pro 13" is really good for DJing, and it's a nice powerful and portable machine, but it still is a pro.
they could remove the oDD from the white macbook and keep it in the pros, but then the white would become better in specs than the 13" pro, which doesn't seem logical. unless they remove the optical drive from the white and only add battery life instead of specs etc, which means 15hours of battery!

This is why I believe they will not use quad-core sandy bridge.

Apple are generally very quick to use new CPU tech, and very slow to use new non-CPU tech that wasn't designed by them.

Mobile quad CPUs have been available for a long time now, but the old quad generation were effectively a generation behind the duals (45nm vs 32nm). This is the first time where quad CPUs have moved from enthusiast only segments. I'd presently put them somewhere between mainstream and performance. So the MBPs SHOULD get them.

I feel sad that apple chose to use dual-core sandy bridge.
To be honest, I do not know if there is quad core sandy bridge for laptops yet.

There are tons of quad core SB reviews that came out over a month ago.

You should read up on this - it's pretty cool. The dual cores will see proportionally the same improvements which is really great.

It is a bigger improvement than C2D to i5 was.

You are right. There are already lots of thin/light and 6.5 lb notebooks announced that will have quads and good video chips.

At 45 watt TDP the quads should work fine in a 17" MBP.
