I haven't timed it with a stop watch but I just installed a intel 320 120 GB into my MPB 2011 15" 2.0 and im about 12-15 seconds.

So it looks like the differences in day-to-day general use between Sata II vs Sata III in 2011 Macbook Pro's are very small. Example: the boot times are generally ranging between 12-19 seconds.

So for a general light user, the upgrade from a Vertex2 to a Vertex3 in a 2011 MB Pro doesn't seem like a big performance (real-world) jump, especially considering the doubling of read/write specs.

The Vertex3 benchmark specs are very impressive, yet I am getting the feeling that most users are affected/using the smaller random read/write speed.

Now, if I could throw my Vertex2 SSD in an external Thunderbolt capable hard drive enclosure, now I surely would have to get a Vertex3 SSD for the main HD bay... :)

Is the Vertex 2 a pain to upgrade? I have a Windows 7 bootcamp partition and VMware Fusion.

Is the Intel 320 better than the 510? I would like the drive to give me least amount of problems as possible.

Least amount of possible problems? Kingston V+ 100 or Samsung 470. Those are very similar to the SSDs Apple uses.

Intel 320 GC routine isn't really suited for an OS without TRIM. You may need to apply the TRIM hack.

No SSD but boot time just as fast

I installed a Seagate XT hybrid drive with 4gb SSD. My boot time to login dialog box is 18 seconds.

Possible Apple Cause for Sata3 Issue

I'm talking about from pressing the power button to the appearance of the desktop background picture.

My Vertex 3 120GB gets ~ 19 seconds, while my M4 128GB gets ~ 14 seconds.

MBP 2011 13" Core i5.

Please check a couple of times.

Hi,

I have created a thread in the OCZ forums with the vertex3 issues that macbook pro 2011 users have with sata3. If anyone has a sata3 ssd (does not have to be ocz vertex3 please feel free to have a look)

we want as many macbook pro 2011 17" especially owners to see the thread and see if they have similar problems worth adding to so I can send this to my technical advisor at apple to try to sort this out.

What the hell is wrong with mine??

I average about 27-30 with an Intel x25-M 120GB in my 2011 15" MBP (2.0 GHz quad i7, 8GB RAM, and an old Kingston 256GB SSDNow V+ in the optibay).

It boots at 27 in Lion and 30 in SL.

Why am I more than double you guys? (I know it's a G2, but I don't think it should be that much slower). It doesn't even hit the apple logo until about 15 seconds.

Have you tried resetting EMC + PRAM? After that set your startup disk again at OS X.

If that doesn't work I'd try a clean install on the Kingston V+, it boots faster than Intel G2 (source: Techreport.com).

I've tried resetting EMC and PRAM, yeah.

I guess I'll go with a clean install on the Kingston. Thanks for the tip. I'll probably wait for Lion to come out officially first, though. It's just going to be a pain in the ass since the Intel is the smaller of the two drives, so I didn't really want to use it for my media and larger files.

Get the 510. The 310 is only SATA2.

I run a Intel 510 on my 2011 13". I'd be less bothered about boot times and more concerned with xbench or other similar benchmarks. I will post mine when I get a spare min.

With my stock 5400 RPM HDD I can boot on in 35 seconds. To boot into Windows 7, my Toshiba used to take 2 minutes! 35 seconds is fast enough for me! :apple:

Get the 510. The 310 is only SATA2.

The 510 has major issues on MacBook Pros. The SATA2 drives do not. In addition, the Samsung 470 has been tested by many and found to be nearly as fast as SATA3 drives under the same loads.
