After much thought … I'll almost certainly avoid the newest MacBook Pro. For me the solid state-only storage and Retina display will be a waste of money.

Actually, for me the retina display is kind of wasted too. I've been running in clamshell mode exclusively for week. Retina is retina, but big is big and I'm looking at a 27" 1440p display.

Anyway, the SSD isn't a waste unless you simply need more than offered (very likely if you work with media). For me it was a good deal because I got the higher end rMBP as a replacement.
 
If you were surviving on a 64Gig MBA, then the 2012 would still suffice. If you ran into problems with speed/beach balls, you could easily upgrade RAM or to an SSD.
