Exactly. I feel that apple will certainly update the pros as the airs are continuing to close in on them from a specification perspective. Apple needs to upgrade the pros a little to make them stand out as Apple's top notebook line.

Airs closing in on the rMBP? Since when? GPU wise the Air's don't come close, especially when you factor in the 750M. CPU wise, well the Airs use the same chip range, they use ULV chips which are much less powerful. Not too mention the display completely blows them out the water. They are two different products aimed at two different markets. I would say they are further apart than they were a few years ago.

he probably meant 13 inchers.. and truly, 13inch retina is no beast, at all. only dual core, slow graphics...

Fair point but I wouldn't call the 13" rMBP 'slow', although it should definitely have a quad core option for it.
iGPU is slow because Intel's iGPU solutions will never match what Nvidia or AMD can offer. It's expected to drive more than 4 times the number of pixels with only a bit faster GPU. This is why if you need GPU performance you really need to go for the 15" + dGPU. Hopefully Intel will continue to improve their iGPU's, but there's only so much they can do with the given silicon real estate and lack of VRAM.

Here we go, they are going to lay to rest the MacBook "Pro" line as they want more to focus on getting younger and younger more hip consumers with parents who work more, spend more and who have less time with their children demographic. So instead of charging a lot from the proSumers out there, why not charge even more from the conSumers out there who thinks spending more than an arm and a leg is getting something quality.

So as iPhones get steroid injections the mac notebooks get estrogen injections + anorexia pills. Very funny business this is right? Phones are becoming laptops soon while laptops are becoming iPods really.

Happy spending. I sure wont be. My 17" MBP early 2006 is still zippy.

Love you all.

Your rant had no place in this thread. Let alone you being wrong:rolleyes:

Agreed, what a strange comment.

I'm hoping for an update @ WWDC. Wanting to replace my 2011 MBA (1.8-i7) with something more powerful + a much better screen. Checked out the latest RMBP's and love the form factor. If nothing gets bumped I'll probably wait until it does, hopefully not to long. Would also love a 30" 4k thunderbolt display. This is well overdue imo.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bump to a 850m dedicated gfx card next week. It's maxwell based and insanely much faster than the 750m (it's on par with the 770m) while consuming the same amount of power.

Update and/or sale coming for macbook pro?

I was recently hired at a nearby university and I'm planning to purchase a 15in MBP sometime this summer (to use in my classes this Fall). But when to buy? Is an update to this model likely before the start of the school year? (I noticed it's been a while. On that note, why has Apple upgraded models in Oct - after most folks have purchased their technology for that year?). Also, from my previous days in academia, I remember Apple often had Back-to-school sales. Do they still do this, and if so, when would they be likely to start. Thanks for any info/insights!!

Same here!

You have some benchmarks to prove that? Still thinking to switch my 13" for a 15", for the better gpu performance. But if it's worth the wait, i'll wait :)

I'm just hoping for some type of bump next week. I'd really like to buy something soon and with broadwell seemingly delayed until the end of the year i doubt apple will do any major release before 2015.

I'd really prefer not to buy last years model and even a tiny bump will make me feel better about making the plunge.

I'm expecting the 8GB 13" Pro to become the standard with 128GB mated to it. Probably stay at 2.4 GHz, maybe get bumped to 2.5. It will still be $1299.99.

Having a Retina at 4GB was a dumb move.

The 15" will probably get bumped to a 4850HQ and get bumped to 2.3 or it will get bumped to the 4760HQ to 2.1 GHz. Same ram, same SSD's. From the assembly line, processor upgrades are cheap. Not as cheap as memory upgrades but Apple won't set base machines of any size to 16GB until 2016 at the earliest.

Very unlikely to see a GPU upgrade. It's not worth it and they're probably phasing out dGPU's anyway.

We might see TB3.

Hell, Apple might even forego Broadwell entirely due to Skylake being so much better and coming around the exact same time.

Wild ass guesses:

If the Air is going Retina (and I believe it will) then I suspect the Pros to get some mix of modest improvements as well:

- 4K screen BTO option
- .1 or .2 GHz speed bumps
- bigger SSD's (everyone moves up a step: 128 becomes 256, 256 becomes 512, etc)
- small price cuts across the board ($100 - 200)

This should tide Apple over until Intel's next gen chips are ready for the Xmas rush, whereupon the next model of Pros will be released.

Hello all,

First time Mac user and forum poster here. I am facing the same dilemma. I just purchased a MBP 15" last week and I am deciding if I should return it within my 14 day return period and see what happens at WWDC next week.

Is anyone familiar with Apple's return policy? Is there a restocking fee if I returned my MBP within 14 days of purchase?

Thank you

Nope, no restocking fee. However It would suck if you went and returned your MBP and there was no spec bump.. Welcome to the insanity of being a mac user.

These are wishful, pie-in-the-sky dreams for the near future. You're unlikely to see any of these things.

I would say that the minor processor bumps and price reductions are far from "pie-in-the-sky," and are quite reasonable to expect, given what's happened with the MacBook Airs recently. Probably not the stuff about the displays and SSDs, though.

Personally... being the tech junkie I am, I would return it on about the 8th day, and then wait it out for the new releases! Although, to play devil's advocate, I'm happily using the 2012 rMBP (maxed out).

The processor bump will come, yes. That's basically a given (although timing is up in the air). The price reduction, no. October was a price cut in and of itself. This is a high-margin item. I give it <5% chance. It would be utterly nuts from a business perspective to do it.

My mid 2010 MacBook was replaced by apple because of multiple major failures. I was given two options, the MacBook air or the MacBook pro. I picked the MacBook pro but haven't opened it yet. Will they let me get the retina model if I pay extra? The apple store is obviously closed now but I'm just wondering if anyone know?
