Hello everyone,

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro with Touchbar which has, until a couple of months ago, has really been working well for me. I often work late at night as I work in events, so it's become a real annoyance that the backlit keyboard either doesn't work completely, or sporadically. The MacBook is 3 years old this month, so I do feel like it's got a little bit more life in it yet.

I popped into the Apple Store last week who told me it would be £300+ to get fixed after running tests, which barely seems worth it for a laptop that's 3 years old. The laptop has no physical damage, and I haven't spilt anything on the keyboard for it to stop working. The keys themselves all work absolutely fine.

I have researched online for tips, I've tried rebooting multiple times, and updated software, all to no prevail. I did have an issue with one USB-C port about a month ago, which 1 week ago fixed itself and started working again (assume some debris in it potentially), and then the backlit keys started to work again.

It feels like it's more of a software issue though that hardware.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Likely the issue is with the LED power center, which is soldered into the top part. I would gauge what your next steps are.

For example, can you afford a new Mac? If not, then £300 doesn't seem too bad.

Hey Jay,

Thanks for your help - maybe this is the push I need to just get myself a new one as I've been eyeing up the 14inch MBP anyway! Is it a simple fix, would it be worth taking it to a none Apple approved repair place, or would you not advise to do this?

Thanks,

Was it bought from apple? If so, note the sale of goods act at them. If not, then the same technically applies, but with where you bought it from, though historically it seems to always have been easier to lever on apple for this.
