That could perhaps still work with 2015 and 2016 that went out of support quite recently - IF YOU ARE VERY LUCKY. But absolutely no chance with older machines.Someone here posted a 1-800 phone number to call and stated that if you are extra nice to the Apple Rep they can actually get your display replaced for FREE! Also in the UK there is a consumer law that Apple has to replace the display for FREE not sure if that law is here in Toronto, Canada? So no sure if anyone has tried calling that number to see if it actually works or not?
I had to deal with the same thing in summer (i brought in my 2015 machine - but purchased in late 2018 - to the shop for lcd replacement on July 29th, support for the model was ended on July 31th - while it was still under 4 yrs old - but the repair wasn’t open until August 2nd) and it was hell to negotiate an exception. 8 hours on the phone, went through 5 different applecare advisors before one finally agreed that it wasn’t my fault the AASP hadn’t started the repair in time and I should indeed be eligible for a free screen replacement. And I actually submitted my computer for the repair within its eligibility period!
So if you have the time, try it. But don’t expect much. The phone number will be on apple’s support website
