Wrong. Most watch buyers don't buy the cheapest they can find because it offers the same function. Fashion is a massive and probably primary selling point. If they only wanted something to show them the time when they raised their wrist, Rolex would not exist. Don't underestimate the fashion purpose for the reason the Apple watch will sell as many as it will sell. Why buy a MacBook when an Acer Windows laptop can offer more hardware? Apple make a lot of money out of their aesthetic focused designs.

Not sure if Apple can generate enough revenue for anything above the sport if Gruber's prices are close. I understand that with premium materials comes premium pricing. But $1500 for the mid-tier SS watch with a link bracelet isn't going to really tap into the majority of Apples built-in, loyal, GIANT fan base. I just don't think the normal 18-35y/o is gonna dump that kind of cash on anything above the sport model. Which leaves every other model for those people who see it as a must have fashion accessory, or spoiled rich kids. And even that has it's questions. Are the fashion concious even interested in the Apple watch as a beautiful piece of fashion in terms of a watch? No, not really I don't think. It's a fat square piece of technology. It's not like a rolex. It'll be outdated in 2 years. If I was looking for a fashionable watch and wanted to dump $1500 on it, I don't think an Apple smart watch would rank up with my choices. Unless I was looking for a cool smartwatch.

So in my opinion if Gruber is even close with his predictions the Sport model will be the only model that will set records in terms of sales. The Watch collection and the edition collection will be a very small portion of overall sales.

Me personally, I am going to most likely get the Watch collection in Space Black. I wanted it with the space black link bracelet, but not for $1500. So if that's the case I am going to get either the leather loop, or the sport band to start. Then maybe upgrade to the link in a few months. I am just hoping that Gruber is wrong in his prediction. My original thought was $750-$850 for the set up I want. And I still think there is a good chance of that. We will all know soon!

Just hours away now, I guess all I can say is that I'm in for a 42mm DLC-coated SS on steel link bracelet up to about $700, maybe $750. Even that's 2x the price of the Sport, and feels like a painful upgrade.

Above that, the upgrade is too costly for an iPhone accessory I fully expect to replace in a year or two, and I'll just go with the base Sport model.

Even at $700, I might well decide that I'd rather buy a second 38mm Sport for my wife or son, rather than pay the upgrade for sapphire/stainless.

I have the money to buy whatever I want without disturbing my financial situation, but part of the reason I have that option is that I'm thoughtful about where my money goes.

Others may well make different decisions, and I wish them the best, but if I'm spending $2K at the Apple Store this week, it's darn well not going to be on a single Apple Watch.

Looks like Apple hit the balance just right. $600 for the base model SS is worth it, but the Black on Steel link at (presumably $1099) is more than I'm wanting to pay.

It'll be a tough call between the Sport and base SS model for me, which is what Apple does perfectly - they make the upgrade within reach, but slightly painful.

The Apple Watch is not a Rolex though. It's a mass-produced piece of electronics made in China.

A Rolex is a mass produced, mostly machine made piece of mechanics made in Rolex, and it starts at $8K. Heck, they've been using the same movement in most of their watches for decades, outside of small improvements. It's no great deal, either.

Right. I don't think Rolex is a useful point of comparison - they've carved out a fantastic and unique space in the watch industry over the course of decades, to the point where their economics and the economics of purchasing/owning a Rolex are wildly different from EVERY other watch manufacturer, Swiss or otherwise.

A little like WoW in gaming, you hear a lot about companies trying to take on Rolex, Rolex-killers, Rolex is slipping, etc... but honestly, nobody is even close (FWIW, I'm mostly an Omega/Sinn/Ball guy, don't own a Rolex) to being a real contender.

Any time another company or individual says 'Well, Rolex does X'... it's NOT evidence that anyone else can do X.
