Use Fancontrol and you will be fine. Although I actually consider this an Apple shortcoming.

Mines' using the GT, dual display, browser, word, and it's 53deg cel, fans spinning at 3343. If I just use smcfancontrol, it would be 60+ deg cel at 2000odd fan rpm.

The hottest mine ever gets is around 165 ºF (70 ºC), around the area in front of the hinge, left side, above the Escape and F1 keys. This is only during long Google Earth or Hulu Desktop sessions. Average "normal" temp, such as right now with just Firefox running, is 105 ºF (40 ºC).

My Targus chill mat helps a bit.

Mine rarely gets below 60ºC. If I play video, a Flash movie, have lots of browser tabs open, I'm 70ºC and above and the fan is screaming. VMware Fusion VMs make it happen, too, to the point where I've stopped using it. It's unbearable.

Sometimes, I use smcFanControl to keep the baseline fan speed at 3000rpm, but it doesn't matter, really. When the things that make the CPU heat up are happening, and they're happening a lot, it's screaming again.

I hate to say this and I'm not trolling, but it's starting to make me think about using my Windows machine more.

Hello,

i had the same issue, it was a problem when i left work and closed my laptop before disconnecting my display! For some reason that made it run super hot, so form now on i just disconnect my screen first, then close my display/laptopThat fixed it for me, i think for some reason even when it was closed it keeped running!

my 13 mbp ranges from 32c to 90c depending on task and i leave the fan minimum at 4k.

for comparison my almost identically spec'd work dell latitude has never exceeded 52c doing the same tasks. I can work on it all day with win7, 8 remote desktops, virtual center running, 1/2 dozen excel spreadsheets, outlook, ad, exchange management console, cmd windows, itunes, browsers, and 2 chat programs and the machine runs under 42c all day.

my mbp hits 48c looking at finder only. lol.

now in all fairness the latitude series is aimed at business class. i assume the mbp's are aimed at main street consumers.

Coffee anyone?

I don't have any more Apple Care! In fact, the Apple Care here is nothing but rubbish!

At least, I am breaking a new hotest MacBook Pro record :D

Really? it's only 87°C

Check this out...

mine goes to 99°C! Steaming!! :D

Has anyone checked the thermal grease on one of the new MBPs? It sounds like there might be some kind of defect with them. Or it could just be Apple pushing the thermal envelope a little more to get a quieter computer.

AND, the way the keys are spaced makes it perfect for...waffles! Though to be honest, I'm having a little trouble with the batter sticking. Should I be using a nonstick spray?

Get a second MacBook Pro and you could have the ultimate in a Toastie maker!

and perhaps more eggs on the other?

I tried to warm up some pizza on my MBP once. There was some pizza for lunch for everyone who was at this event but it was kind of cold. I had my MBP to show some videos, but the event hadn't started yet, so I started a script, flipped it over, and set my pizza on it on a paper plate. I just used a simple Python script running in two tabs in terminal to use both cores:

Code:
$python
>>>while 1:
... i=1+1
...

It didn't work very well, I suspect because I was not using the GPU and because I was only using part of the CPU (the part that adds) not complex instructions used for things like encoding video.

my umbp hits 70+ just browsing the internet, even with the GPU off and my fans on 4000rpm. i hate it.

At least it's not just me. Not that this gives me great comfort. I'm starting to get frustrated, though. So much for all the Apple BS about how glorious and flawless their products are. Not that I ever believed it. This is a major problem. When it becomes hard to work because the computer sounds like a jet engine, the hardware has become an obstacle. I have more performance problems with this computer than with my Windows machines over the last 5-8 years, too. By far. I see a whole lot of that damn beach ball.

Do iMacs have this same problem, given that they're using lots of the same electronics?

How much would one of the thermal pads help?

I'm pretty sure that a year ago, these problems weren't so extreme. It got hot, often, but not THIS often.

All computers produce heat regardless of model or brand, it's just one of those things. Also, a year ago, our machine used to run at a lower clock speed, thus producing less heat.

If your worried about the heat issues, you can always download some utilities to over-ride the default SMC settings, one i use is smcFanControl or people have gone with FanControl both application essentially does the same thing. Alternative, try CoolBook.

Yeah my UMP's highest temp had to be near 92C. Not as bad as others but definatly a cause for concern. I just use smcfancontrol and turn it on when I need it. Then I restart, boot into Windows 7 and play my games. It still gets a little hot but I just purchased one of these bad boys http://www.enermaxusa.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_57&products_id=155&osCsid=3563e5dda7f07c3c1c579f9b9d58a043 and I'll tell you while gaming my temps have dropped down all the way from 90C to about 76C. It's an amazing cooler and definatly recommend it if your gaming or doing anything that heats up your mac really good.

UltraNEO*, of course all laptops produce heat. But that's not the point of this thread. That's like saying all combustion engines use gas. But some use three times as much as others.

I appreciate the smcFanControl tip, but I'm already using it, as I mentioned earlier. It's close to useless. Yes, I can make the fan run at a higher baseline, but that accomplishes little. Once the CPU turns into the sun at the slightest provocation, the fan is screaming and being near the machine starts to become intolerable. What's the advantage I'm getting from it? When the CPU gets overactive, it's starting from a lower temp, so things stay quieter for 2 or 3 seconds?

I turned the machine off overnight and restarted maybe 45 minutes ago. At bootup, it was about 40°C. Now it's 51° with only Mail and Firefox with three tabs open. I'm going to wait a bit before I open a bunch of tabs and my regular apps. I'm going to see how much each app contributes to the CPU temp and therefore, the noise level. Maybe I'll find out something interesting beyond the expected problems with VMware Fusion, Flash and video.

I just got my macbook pro 13 inch today and the two times I lay down to use it (I have it lying on my chest), I noticed it getting really hot. The old umb did get hot when running cpu intensive apps, but this was only running youtube. Not the greatest first day impressions, the more I use the laptop the more I wished I kept the original. :(

Downloaded the fan control app, so it seems I need to keep at 4k rpm just not to have it burning a hole in me.
