Now that the computer has been on all day, it's running at about 60° give or take a degree or two depending. I'm staying away from the CPU intensive stuff, for the most part, just to try and keep the temp down. I set the baseline fan speed to 3000rpm, a 50% increase over the system's natural baseline. It didn't lower the temperature even a single degree.

Not that 60° is so bad. It's fine. At least until I do something more intensive. Like typing fast. ;)

can leaving the fans on 4000rpm or more constantly be bad for them? if i leave them on default it gets REALLY hot

It will shorten their life some, and they might start making noises (like clicking) prematurely, but that would happen anyways at a lower speed (just more slowly). I would hope the fans are designed to last the life of the computer at 6000RPM 24/7, but you never know with :apple:'s cost cutting.

I was worried about the lifespan of them. But my reasoning was that applecare should cover a fan if it goes dead right? So I can use them to their fullest extent and not worry?

this is incorrect,

fans are designed at a specific voltage, such as 6v , to make them spin slower they run at a lower voltage.

6v would be the fan at full speed, which it is designed for. lets say 6000rpm

4.5v would be the fan at 4500rpm which would not decrease the life of the fan.

so running a fan at its max is only making the fan operate at the voltage it was designed for. it will not have any effect on when the fan will die.

fans are covered under applecare.
