I was under the impression that the unibody construction was still relatively new, and that it is going to basically be a defining feature of portable macs.

I disagree, kind of. I think it would be nice if Apple gave you a CTO option to ditch the optical and grab a second HDD or SSD. Personally since having the Air I haven't found a reason to be married to the idea of an optical drive. However, if you have but only one machine it does make life difficult.

Yeah, my bias comes from using an MBP as my primary computer. I agree that the option would be good, but the whole interchangeable-drive thing makes my Powerbook 5300 PTSD act up. :)

I said it in 2009 before the Unibodys came out, and I'll say it again.

I just can't fathom where they can go from here. With the exception of the glass screen, the uMBP is in my mind, perfection. I just can not fathom what Apple could possibly do to change it for the better.

Then again, I said that with the old Macbook Pro, and they definitely changed that design for the better.

In any case, we'll be seeing this design for a long time.

IPS screen like the new iMacs. USB 3.0. Blu-ray drives. Or completely ditch the optical drive and have a larger battery. Bluetooth 3.0, new CPU, new GPU, audio over mini DisplayPort.

Or in the future: 8GB RAM standard, SSD standard, higher res screens, etc.

There's plenty of things to do to improve the MBP, but it wouldn't be smart to do them all at once.

I love the current design, but, I'd love it more if I could have the hood in a glossy black.. I've always wanted a black Mac :(

Something like this would be amazing..

Looks nice except the speakers are ridiculously big. I honestly dont even like the speakers on the current 15 and 17 inch MBPs, I mean the sound is the best you can get on a notebook but I'm not a fan of the look. Also no multitouch trackpad?

if you look at the new White MacBook, you'll find that it is actually designed to match the unibody aluminum design. the overall structure is very similar between the two models with the unibody upper case with a single piece lower case, which when removed allows you access to all the internal components. the only difference between the two is the material and the rounder edges of the MB comparing to the MBP. the rounder edges would make sense because MB is designed to be a consumer product and MBP is a professional product with its more industrial looks. compare this to the old white MacBook which has more in common with the old MBP design which is constructed of multiple pieces with metal reinforced framing inside.

Also, you can take a look at Apple's product lines beyond the MacBook and see a convergence in product design. the iMac and the iPad are both designed with similar elements when compared to the MBP. Even accessories such as the remote was recently redesigned to match the aluminum and black look. This design trend is here to stay for the next couple of years at least. Just look at how long the previous MacBook Pro design lasted, which actually originated from the days of PowerBook G4.

The unibody is only about 18 months old... My latest MacBook Pro was purchased in February 2008 the last before the unibody... the next update was June 2008 introducing the new unibody ..I know because my son bought his latest at that time. The last update included memory card for quick camera downloads.

Carbon fiber laptops can be quite strong. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2-o0zMuits That's a Sony Z series, carbon fiber bottom/lid, aluminum keyboard cover. Oh, and http://img504.imageshack.us/i/vaiotest2fotoji1.jpg/ :p Same laptop.

This is actually quite funny. When you drop your laptop, how often does it land precisely on either an entire edge or absolutely flat? Let me help you with the answer. NEVER. Drop it on a corner where 95% of all laptops land and then judge how good it is.

Fact.

The current unibody look was introduced in October 2008 with the 15" MacBook Pro and 13" MacBook. The 17" kept it's old design until January when it was refreshed with the new unibody design and built in battery.

The line up was modified in June 2009 during WWDC when the 13" unibody was rebranded Pro and both the 13" and 15" were given the improved built in battery.

All this time the whitebook remained on sale until was refreshed late last year. So to say Apple moved from the aluminium MacBook look to the new plastic look is just nonesense.

you know, I watch that, and I wonder what POS SSD's they're using that it takes that long to boot up...or is it just too much Vaio bloatware?

Not sure if that's SSD, since that is the original Z which was available with regular hard drives.

I had a blackbook and like the option. Of course, I thought the black surcharge was a rip! If it did not cause Apple to slow production or increase production cost, then more choices are always better!

You better hope there is no update for a simple reason. If there is they will probably like everyone else switch to 16:9. 16:9 is great if you have a big screen like the 27" iMac but it sucks on Notebooks where you need maximum screen size at a certain portability level.
Keep the case as it is and only change what is in it.

There is no way Apple will be updating the design on the Unibodies. Apple will milk this design for a few more revisions. They have invested too much into the R&D to change it up so soon.

You got better specs with the blackbook though. It wasn't just a fee for the black casing. It had a processor speed and HD size bump. Right?

I would love to buy a black MBP 17", not glossy black though.. anodized/matte black would be the best.. especially with a matte screen. I'd pay more for it

also.. I don't think anything else with the case will be redesigned because they just released aperture 3 using pictures of the current mbp... so it seems unlikely that they would have used a current mbp in the picture if they're gonna release a new one in a matter of days.

As for a case redesign, you guys are DREAMING. Apple didn't spend millions on R&D to create the unibody design, just to ditch it 2 years later.

This.
Apple's streamlined look seems to be aluminium with black bezels in recent years, don't think they plan to change it anytime soon, imo there's a good chance of the 4th gen iPhone following suit.
I personally wish they'd introduce black as an alternative color option, but I know that just isn't happening as it seems like Apple want their computers to look uniform and instantly 'identifiable' by more than just the glowing apple on the back.

a white apple would show up so much better on a black case..

they should do something to differentiate the core 2's from the i5's.. making black an option would be a great way but I doubt it'll happen.

I'd be cool with the i5s replacing the c2d machines outright...

one thing apple can do is to ditch the cd drive, make it external and make the mbp thinner without the dvd drive.
imagine a thinner mbp, that would be sexy! mmmm...

What about the harddrive? So I doub't It would be thinner, lighter yes not thinner.

No it would be crap. You don't want shiny surfaces all over.

The current design is still up to date and I don't see Apple changing it anytime soon.
