I have a 13" MBP 2.26GHz that has EFI 1.7 installed, and I have had 0 problems. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB, and installed the intel 160GB G2 SSD. I don't recall having a single spinning beachball. This thing works perfectly! I also use it for work, so I am on it 8-10 hours a day. I couldn't be happier with it!

Mine works great too except when playing specific .avi files, then I get beachballs.

Are people still having problems with the Scorpio Blue in the June MBPs?

When did you purchase your MBP? If you have Coconut Battery installed, can you let us know the approximate date of manufacture? Did it come with EFI version 1.7 installed?

I purchased it in June 2009. It did not have EFI 1.7 pre-installed. I installed it myself.

I finally got around to installing Snow Leopard, and like a dummy i allowed it to update without viewing the details. It seems as though i dodged a bullet on it upgrading to the 1.7 firmware as it is still on the list when i go to updates.

I kind of fell off on following this. I had just installed my ram and scorpio blue HD when this update came out and it was causing all the problems. Is this still the case? Is the update still to be avoided?

Thanks for the help.

If your About this Mac/More Info... gives you this line:
Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
The you have the 1.7 update. If the line says B02 on the end it is the 1.6 firmware.

I have a new uMBP 13" 2.53Ghz (MBP5, 5). I couldn't get my Crucial M225 (256GB) SSD to work no matter what I tried.

I ended up burning the EFI firmware 1.6 file (link found in this thread) to a DVD & rolled the firmware back. I then popped the SSD into the uMBP & installed SL. I disabled safe sleep & SMS.

No issues so far.

Except you're probably not getting the full potential of your SSD because your system is now operating at SATA 1 speed. Almost 4 months since this problem first surfaced and still no response from Apple.

1.5 or 3.0 gbs

What i dont get it why my MB Pro early 2008 get almost the same disk performance as my Macbok pro 17 mid 2009?

The MB 2008 model is 1.5 and the 2009 model is 3.0 with efi 1.7.

Bought a Macpro Pro 17 for performance with SATA-300 support for a lot money but the speed sucks!

Who can post there AJA speeds also with a ST9500420ASG disk?

It's simple: regular hard drives don't even tax a SATA150 interface so SATA300 won't be any faster. With SSDs it does matter.

But why do i get lower disk read/write speeds in comparison to older Macbooks?

Downgraded to 1.6 EFI firmware last night, along with a pram and an smc reset.

So far there has been no beach balling. I will continue to monitor it's behavior.

I have a 500gb WD scorpio blue installed.

I had the Scorpio Blue 500gb and went through 2 of them from Macsales, clicking noise and the whirling air sound was ridiculous. I was on the latest EFI of 1.7 and never had the problems that you folks mention here. I have a uMBP, not the June release the one before it that I purchased New from Expercom.

For all of you WD Scorpio Blue 500GB WD, are you hearing allot of clicking and like air noise? I talked to a freind of mine at Best Buy and he said that if the ones there selling are making those noise's no one is returning them, and that they cannot keep them on the shelf. I never had the Beach Ball effect that is mentioned here

I have a Hitachi 500gb and once again I am back to air whooshing noise's and not sure of whether to return it and stay with the stock 320 or try a Toshiba or Fujitsu from New Egg? If SSD's were not so dam expensive I'd just go with a 160, but that's out of the budget for now

I've never heard any clicking or whirring sounds in my HDD

I have the same one from Newegg and have never heard those sounds either...

That's really crazy to me. I have tested two and both have the clicking sound as well as a constant, noticeable "woosh". The second one also vibrated a lot so I decided to go back to the original one that I purchased. Ya'll really don't hear either of these sounds? The clicks are quiet enough that you really need to be in near silence, but when you are, they are noticeable and slightly annoying. The "woosh" is noticeable at all points for me. The stock drive was virtually silent so maybe I am just spoiled, but both of these drives are considerably louder than the one that they replaced.

I know two drives hardly counts as an ample sample size, but coupled with the multitude of reports of these same problems, I figured this was just a flaw of the drive. If ya'll truly don't hear these noises in relatively quiet conditions, I will seriously consider going in for an exchange.

I put the stock 320 Hitiachi back in yesterday and Hear nothing, and the computer room we have setup hear in the house is quiet but not silent.

All I can say is that I hear a whooshing noise that even according to tech support said that that drive should be silent. Other thing I try to remember is that metal will amplify a noise and there is NO insulation if you will between the palm rest and the Hard drive.

My scorpio blue barely makes a whimper even with heavy reading or writing.

Also worth noting: I have had two 13" MBPs in the last 2 weeks, both had 1.7 EFI and both worked beautifully with the hard drive.

Stick a piece of chewing gum on the thin metal cover of the drive. It will kill that whoosh sound. The thin metal cover acts as a sounding board.

Seriously, I don't use chewing gum, but I do put a small 'pancake' of a sticky putty in the middle of that metal cover, centered over the center of where the platters are. It is about the size and shape of a nickel or quarter. It does kill the noise too. As a test, and assuming you may not have any putty, just put your finger at that spot on a running drive and see if it kills the noise.

You could use a strip of thin tape wrapped around the putty and the drive if you cannot find a putty that has a sticky enough texture.
