If you went to a music conservatory and like Bose stuff, good for you.

IMO, you need to listen to some real systems.

No matter what the price range, you can do better than Bose at the same price point.

If you like the Bose sound, then you like over-blown shrill sounding highs, non-existent mids, and boomy inaccurate bass. They have spend millions convincing the poor unassuming masses that their sound is hi-fidelity and the best option for home hi-fi listening. It's a bloody tragedy.

have you ever heard the companion speakers chief?!

you want to start talking about real systems bring it on punk

look i dont mean to sound like a snob, but if you've never heard the speakers i am recommending then we cant really have a discussion about them. the companion 3 and 5's are made of steel. i am guessing the ones you heard were the companion 2's. like i said above those are garbage. most of what Bose makes is. but there is just something about the companion 3 and 5's that sound really great.

when it comes to speakers and sound quality i am an absolute elitist. i admit that. my home theater speakers and receiver coast 3 times more than my TV (50" panasonic plasma - sorry dont mean to be a snob haha).

I have a very good ear for music and sound. i went to a music conservatory for undergrad. could it be over kill recommending the bose companion 5's? absolutely. but if the OP is someone that likes good sound quality AND can hear the difference btw a $100 system and a $400 system. he should get the Bose. if not then the logitec are perfectly acceptable.

i owned logitec speakers and couldn't stand them. the difference is in the subwoofer. Bose's bass module is outstanding. logitec's simply sucks. its airy and muddy. Bose's is tight and smooth.

Thats funny because I also studied music, in fact I've been doing so since i was 5, and my ear is pretty sensitive as well, and overall (again did not hear so far the specific model you are recommending) they do not sound what they cost. So far only Sony speakers have kept with my expectations (though I admit I have not gone hearing speakers around).

oh cool where did you study music?

sony and bose are pretty much the same these days. sony's HT-IS100 is a direct copy of what Bose is trying to do.

Not in the US...
ohoh.... how can sony be a copy of something that does not exist (trying to do???)?

making these tiny tweeter speakers and then pumping their mid range thru bass the subwoofer. but what is the first thing ppl do with those subs? they stick them behind something. that doesnt matter for the bass of course but the mid range gets lost.

ahh yea go ahead. give me your best shot

You've got to continue your argument. I've described what the Bose stuff I've heard sounds like. I've heard the home theatre crap at various houses, the Companion 3 and 5 speakers and some of their PA stuff. The Companion 5 speakers had some of the worst bass I've ever heard reproduced. Boomy, boxy and incredibly undefined.

What systems have you had access to over your life-time?

Some of my listening highlights have been my dad's system that I get to listen to on a semi-regular basis (Bryston amplification, ProAc speakers, Marantz digital source, Linn record deck), the B&W monitoring system in Abbey Road Studios in London (in studio 3), and my own humble KRK VXT4 speakers.

I'm doing a music degree at Humber College in Toronto. We just had the amazing Tenor Saxophone player Chris Potter come in for artist in residence week.

What is it about Bose speakers that has you so enthusiastic with their product?

Klipschs are a nice happy medium between Bose and Logitech ;)

If you don't WANT 5.1 sound REALLY BADLY, don't get it! 5.1 speakers are a MESS Of wiring! UGHGHHHH

this is getting ridiculus, the poor man asked for a affordable ~$100 system!

It IS ridiculous, but when someone blasts in here with BOSE IS THE BEST EVER **** YOU LOLZ, I can't help but respond. The fun of the internet at 2:46 in the morning.

wow good for you. your know a little bit.

bryston is easily out performed by my mcintosh mc303. the B&W are nice but if you are talking about being over priced then B&W definitely wins that one flat out. i use a pair of AR9's towers. still today the best sounding stero speakers ever made. does the name Henry Kloss mean anything to you. he is the one that started not only AR but KLH, Advent Corporation, Cambridge SoundWorks, and Tivoli Audio. his pride and joy through his entire life was the AR9. when a studio audience was asked to pick the difference between an actual string quartet playing and an album of that string quartet being played through the AR's NO ONE could tell the difference. the marantz is good and Linn is ok. they dont really have anything to do with the audio quality. any decent digital source will suffice. KRK's....your right you should be humble about those.

oh and i played with Chris when he was here at NEC. great guy.
