Yeah, we walked uphill both ways... In the snow.

Yes, pretty amazing how far we've come. I remember 5M & 10M drives, they seemed impossible to fill. Then the milestone of hard drive prices dropping below $1/megabyte.

Ever play Wizardry on the Apple ][? Or the *original* Castle Wolfenstein on the Apple ][

You ever punch in the code for computer games that were part of each month’s edition of Byte, Antic, or Compute! Magazines? Basically it was a bunch of ASM hidden as DATA statements but it was still fun when it finally ran LOL.

Yep, I did, those were the good ol days :D
Except for that one time I typed CLOAD instead of CSAVE, then ran and crashed my buddy’s Atari 400, and only then found out I hadn’t run the CSAVE cassette command. Hard to start over from scratch; but I never made that mistake again! :)

My 2 cents on this:
It might be better to get a PC than Mac in this case or to utilize Parallel Desktop. I double majored finance during my undergrad — my primary problem back then was that some Excel addons were not supported on Mac so I had to get parallel desktop + pc version of excel back then. I’d say double check with University on software requirements and see if those software/addons are supported on Mac.
Also 128g seems unusable for me :eek::eek:

Oh yes, *cassette* tape storage.

Those were heady days.
Right?

Agree with this. The Windows-only Excel addons were the biggest obstacles to doing the financial modeling stuff with a Mac when I took finance courses and later on at work. There were always workarounds, but no one in your study group has the patience to wait for you to mess with their spreadsheets or switch to using something compatible with just your machine. Go with a Surface.

Many thanks for all the valuable advice guys I think we’re going to have to get a windows machine due to the fact he’ll be mostly using excel on his course and for that Windows is gonna be a better fit for his needs.

One of the cutest devices just out is the MS Surface GO but for a bit more you can get the Surface Pro but as Lisa noted only get it on special offer

I think if you buy at John Lewis you get 2 years warranty but check

A good place to get a rounded review on most laptops is Lisa Gade at mobiletechreview

I am erring on the side of 2 in 1 just for note taking but equally you could look at laptops that have foldback keyboard from HP and Lenovo or Samsung

If you both feel that something light, portable and mobile would make for the best option, perhaps consider a similarly spec’ed Surface Pro or Yoga? If he really would like to be able to connect anywhere, perhaps an LTE model of the Surface Pro.

Edit: If you do go the Surface Pro or Go route, add the Microsoft Complete Coverage that extends the warranty, covers accidental damage and hardware and software support, because stuff happens :)

What about this?
Surface Laptop
256 GB / Intel Core i5 / 8GB RAM £999.00
Includes £250 discount for students at the moment normal price £1249
I like them and glad to see you are sticking with premium build products a little out dated and port constrained expansion wise else best similar quality and style to MBP you originally considered

Great aspect ratio for excel and TP comments are minimal considering a mouse will be essential other wise reviews explain why it may be deemed not the best value but has enough touch capability

If your son thinks he won't like a full 2 in 1 like the Surface Pro and a fixed clamshell is a must then it has a nice feel

here's 2 reviews with some good comments for you :)

Thank you so much Steve.
I really appreciate your advice. The other option was the latest Dell XP13 which is about £150 more expensive.
I just want to ensure he has a decent machine that will last him 3-4 years while he’s at Uni.

Dell is nice too and has possibility of on-site support :) just let him have a look at a couple of them to see what he thinks is cool :D

He will still be able to share with you photos etc with ICloud for windows and contacts/bookmarks etc

If he has an Android phone integration with W10 is better but iPhone and iTunes is supported too

Just watch out for beer stains on that Surface Alacantara KB from freshers week LOL

I'd vote a dell, their support is second only to Apple, and their machines are built solid, and the screens are gorgeous.

Throwing my 2 cents again ;););):

My choices for college windows laptops:

1. Surface Pro: Slim, easy to control on budget, good battery life, easy to carry, sooooooo good on taking notes (I'm not sure what current line up is, you might want to double check to make sure if they are using the latest intel processor -- but I doubt that would matter in your case)

2. Dell XPS 13: Slim, easy to carry, great build quality, great battery life
3. Razer Blade 13: Similar to Dell XPS 13, Mac-like build quality, but do comes with a premium

Personally Surface Pro >> XPS >= Razer Blade. Again this stays in domain of going to college and I'd say Surface Pro tops in that field with no doubt.

After watching Linus Tech Review’s video on Razer laptops, I wouldn’t touch them with your credit card!

Linus said his highest point was buying his staff all brand new Razer laptops, and his lowest point was the fact almost all of them had been RMAed at least once.

This video?

He's pretty positive about the 2018 model.

Btw, being a gaming laptop, the battery performance isn't the best. I had to make a fair amount of changes to squeeze out 5+ hours but its a fabulous laptop. In many ways I liked it better then the MBP.

Yeah, that’s the video. I’ve been interested in Razer laptops since they were first introduced several years ago. Razer made a big deal about how they had ex-intel engineers working to develop a “MBP-level of design laptop for the PC world”.

It just seems that after-sales support is sub-par while history has shown you will need to use it. That’s the deadly killer for me. On a perfectly sunny day no one worries about where to get their umbrella repaired.

I believe he stated this support had improved, and I also had to deal with them and it was fine. I understand your point, but I think they made efforts to improve their support system.
