Congrats!

Congrats on the purchase! Apple products are indeed addicting so be warned ;).

I got an iPhone in February and liked how the OS felt so figured why not try a Mac (was a Windows user forever). Got a macbook in April, gave that to my girlfriend and now using a Macbook Pro 15". Looking to switch my whole family over so maybe getting a Mac Mini for my dad :).

Well my gf will be trying it for the first time on Saturday, she thinks it was a waste of money and could have settled for less. But this is what I wanted so sod her lol. I think she will like it when she gets her head around it all.

I am loving having a dual monitor set up at the moment. Having SMC Fan Control is also helping keep all the temperatures down just to help. The fans arent even that noisy at 4000rpm I am impressed how quiet it sounds considering my friends XPS sounds like it is sucking like a vacuum cleaner!

Also, am I correct in thinking that time machine only backs up changes made? If I were to delete older time machine back ups will that compromise the more recent ones?

funny. i just got my macbook pro 2 weeks ago. I sold my imac and got it. This is my last semester in university, and i had 1 month laptopless... it was nightmare. Seriously, 4 classes, all instructors have their own web, send articles everyday....

Anyway, I think currently macbook pro is good enough for me. I love the design anyway. Plus, I can use it for my desktop and get a new macbook (when I have the $) In addition to that, i have free $100 printer and $209 ipod touch.

I need help with deciding on the macbook pro.

Im in the first week of my university course and already i have coursework and video assignments being handed/about to be handed to me.

The new macbook pros are ment to have this 'core 2 quad' processor and i have heard from a few people (manly video/photo/gaming nuts) that because its not a 'true' quad core processor (its basically two duel cores stuck together) the proformance boost is not as great as it was when going from single core to duel core.

now my needs are adobe cs3 and hopefully cs4, lightwave, and final cut studio. ill also be doing gaming on the side with it (wow mainly and bootcamp, i may try crysis at a later stage).

i have my eyes on the 15.4", 2.6 core 2 duo, 512mb nvidia 8600 on the refurb site (uk) for less than £1400.

i know that untamed beast will do EVERYTHING that i need and still be bored stiff :D

i didnt want to start a new thread on this as i know everyone is getting frustrated with the 10+ threads a day concerning things like this. but i really do not want to make a 'mistake'.

also the whole rumors of the nvidia 8600 cards not functioning when strained too long with intense graphics is worring me (even though Tallest Skil tells us otherwise ;) ). its not that i dont think hes wrong or anything. in all honesty i think hes correct on the matter, but when you are a filming student and your going to blow £1200-1600 on a laptop.........well you become very, very cautious.

sorry if im rambling but a lot of drunken student kept me up last night. didnt sleep a wink :(

any replies from people in my potion or simillar would be nice. or even a comment about the procesor/graphics card.

thanks

Well I am a third year student doing mainly 3D visual stuff as well as long renders I have suffered no glitches of any kind graphic wise. I also use SMC fan control which keeps my GPU hovering around 50-60 degrees C.

If you need it now, I would go for it. This was my logic, I didn't want my work to suffer because I didn't have the proper equipment. My uni PC's are not capable of running high renders with lots of visual work going in the background. This thing multi tasks seamlessly!!

I can't possibly tell you how pleased I am the way this think runs and performs! Money well spent for me as I can now reap the benefits of having a powerful multi tasking machine.

Matty,

That was the fastest reply ive ever got

Cheers though. your right i really cant afford to wait around. i have to give a seminar in 2 weeks and i need to get working away :D

Always wanted a laptop before i turned 21 as well :D

Thanks for the thumbs up. i'll take the 3 year apple care just to be on the safe side.

Thanks

just to check something.

if i buy a refurb macbook pro through my university am i entitled to the £95 rebate off an ipod.

or does that not apply to stuff bought through refurb?

I work in an IT department and when we talk about new computers we plan on getting everyone scoffs at me and gets literally pissed off when I say I plan on getting a mac desktop. Funny how ignorant people can be.

To those who wonder... If you need it now buy it. If you can afford/handle to wait, wait.

No matter when you buy the MBP will always be an awesome machine.

You may be happy today... but you'll be devastated in a week or two. Buying the system now, no matter how great it is, was a mistake.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I bought mine at the end of July knowing full well that updates were imminent. However, I needed it then and I liked the current model so I had no problem with not waiting. I think some people seriously have some sort of phobia of not having the most updated technology.
