Hi! My partner, who is a professional editor, is planning to transition from PC to Mac OS. His current machine runs on intel i7 3rd gen, gtx 1070 with 32gigs of RAM. He can edit 4k footage with this setup but preview and rendering takes so much time.

He uses premiere and after effects and plans to learn to use DaVinci Resolve. He plans to buy a 14 inch Macbook Pro with M5 Pro chip with 48gb ram 1TB storage but still undecided on the choice of the cores. Is 15-core CPU and 16 core GPU enough? Or should he go with the 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU option or is that overkill? Also, is 48gb of ram enough?

Thank you!

I currently work professionally creating and editing videos, graphics, photos and what ever project assigned. I use Adobe's Creative Suite. I currently have a 14" MBP M3 max, 64gb, 16 core CPU/40 core GPU.

Coming from a PC with an i7/1070/32GB, he will be blown away with any M5 MBP configuration. The more cores and memory you have the faster rendering times will be.

I always go over kill on my laptop builds because for me, rendering speeds is time saved. I am waiting the delivery of a new MBP 16" M5 Max, 18 core CPU/40 core CPU, 128GB memory. Overkill - probably but I started video work in 2000 where rendering took all night only to find out there was an error or issue with the video.

Whatever you chose will be a huge upgrade but if you can afford more - more is always better!

Thank you so much for the response! Already forwarded this to him. Yeah, a lot of people online have also been saying to me that compared to the current machine I have now (a 2014 Macbook Pro), any M5 will blow me away hehe. I only went with a base M5 with 32gb ram 1Tb because that's the maximum I can afford right now. I'm also a filmmaker who plans to edit more.
