My girlfriend's old Macbook Pro's screen went kaput, and I have it hooked through dvi-d to my external monitor.
All that shows up is the starry default wallpaper that Apple has, and not her desktop. (it's acting as a connected 2nd screen, I can drag the mouse off of her laptop's screen and it appears on the external display.)

anyway. is there a way to command the macbook pro to use the dvi output as it's main? So we can see her desktop on my external display?
What I mean by command is something to do with the keyboard, since we can't see the screen on her actual laptop to go into system settings.

I heard command F3 changes display mode but does nothing when I do that.

s.o.s. ?

If your keyboard has the F-key with two rectangles, one behind the other, then that's the key. Otherwise, a google search seemed to imply that command-F1 will turn on mirroring, which is what you want.
