Went into the Osaka Apple Store a few nights ago. Saw the nano texture and glossy side by side; fell in love with the nano texture! Planning to hold on to my next laptop for at least five years. Now the big issue is whether to go with the base-level MBP M4 or go up to the Pro, under the assumption that having the Thunderbolt 5 is valid future-proofing...

Unless you're doing a lot of work that demands high speed IO, thunderbolt 5 may not be worth it to go Pro for NOW.

Thunderbolt 4 is still 4 gigabytes per second or thereabouts. Approximately half way through your planned 5 year ownership its entirely possible that thunderbolt 6 or some other new standard will be out - unless you need the high speed IO in the near future, don't buy things you don't need.

It will only be cheaper to sell half-way through, still get good resale on the current machine and upgrade to even better spec in say 2027 - for less money.

Future proofing for some unknown future by over-buying today and then trying to run hardware for too many years generally just costs about the same (or more) as buying mid-spec and upgrading a couple of years sooner and on average upgrading sooner gets you better average performance over time, warranty, etc.

I just received my MBP 14" with nano-texture. Oh my, to say this is the best display I ever used is a bit of an understatement.

I see absolutely no issues with black-on-white text (like right now, on macrumors, in the light theme), and the display is less reflective than the wooden table I'm sitting at. The nano-texture does indeed give it a bit of an e-paper look, which I haven't seen in a display before - not in my previous MacBooks, not in (normal) iPads, nor in NEC photography monitors.

I probably am just very excited right now by the new display, and will see some downsides in the next days, but not having the glare in my eyes makes this the easiest displays on my eyes I've ever used, and I'm very happy about it.
In fact, as I said, it´s the main reason I changed from Macbook Pro 16" M1. And don´t think it´s the same nano texturized as in the very expensive Pro Display XDR. It´s BETTER. In Macbooks Pro M4 the nano texturized layer is the inside layer, closer to the screen, so you can clean it much easier, and no risk of compromise the nano texture.

Although Apple include the same cloth, you can clean it with any microfiber without any problem.
