When investing, the first thing to consider is what you'll be using it for...

Based on what you've said, the MB will be fine...

The next question to ask: How long before your next purchase?

If you intend on replacing it in a year or two, go for the MB, but if you want something that'll "future-proof" you for the next 4 or so years, go for the MBP.

My friend taught me something though... When faced with 2 decisions, toss a coin. The actual result of heads or tails might not help, BUT while the coin's in the air spinning around, you'll be HOPING and WISHING for it to land in a specific position... Try this and go for the decision you make while it's in mid air. =)

After all these posts by all of you, I am still torn!! :)

To be honest I struggled using the macbook on a plane especially if the seat in front is reclined. However on your lap both are fine.

I had to make the same decision. Bought a Macbook first, but had to take it back after one day due to a broken DVD drive. When I had to pick up the new one, I checked out the MBP and paid some more to take the MBP home instead of the MB. Why? Because I read a lot of reports about how much better the MBP screen was. And it's true, it's a whole lot better but the MBP is quite bit bigger and heavier too. Since I mainly wanted a laptop to take with me all day long, I kinda doubt whether I should've done this switch.

I really really love this MBP, it's a fantastic laptop, but when I'm able to sell it again without losing too much money (I live in Belgium) I think I would get a Macbook instead, simply for the sake of it being a lot smaller.

Hi there, thanks for this feedback. Im about ready to buy either a MB or MBP 15" (i assume thats the size you had). I too am affraid that the MBP is too big to travel with for work 2x/mo. But in reality it does only weight 1 more pound than the MBP. I love the better screen on the MBP and the better speakers. We will see....

well, i made my decision, I am going to wait for the next revision to purchase, and it will be a macbook and not a macbook pro. Even if SL is not out by the time the macbook get's the bump, I am still going for it.

thanks for everyone's help

Oh boy - i am pretty messed up now....back and forth i go. i am definetly going with the macbook, but now the question is, what do you all think of me waiting it out till the next revision? Is it worth it, i assume the next revision is about 1 1/2 months away?

I doubt it, there is a speculated software event at the end of march and then i think its WWDC in June which is reserved for ipods and the iPhone. I dont think you will see a revision until october on Macbooks, But that's just my opinion. Nobody really knows what's going to happen.

I dont think there will be a revision till summer and even then i dont expect any physical changes just snow leopard. SO just currious why did you deicde to go with the MB and not MBP?? Size?

Yes. The size. And I have a 2.8ghz extreme iMac for my home desktop. No need for two high end machines.

After watching a ton of YouTube videos and reading over a dozen reviews the macbook will do exactly what I need it to do and more

I feel your pain. I'm in the midst of the MB vs MBP decision myself. I'm currently a student, but will be graduating in a year, so I rely heavily on my laptop. I like the extra screen real estate of the MBP, and I figure I can use it as a desktop replacement until I can save up enough of my own post-college for an iMac. I don't really need the graphics card (I do light photoshopping, but that's it at the moment. maybe i'll get into more with the pro though ) but I need the 15". So I could go on and on about how I wish Apple would make a 15" MB, blahblah but they probably never will and I don't mind spending more to get a bit extra, this is how Apple makes it money and I don't mind that. Plus, firewire external might be the way to go.

happy :)

Maybe you guys can help me with the same topic. I'm waiting until the summer to unload my current Macbook (late 2008, 13.3inch white, bought it ineurope, 2.4ghz 2gb ram intel graphics with a 160gb hd) and debating getting a pro.

I do a considerable amount of writing and presenting, I'm in the foreign affairs field, I travel a bunch overseas, and in my downtime I enjoy flash games (but I would like to be able to play a game like spore or the sims on the plane). I also use it for watching videos, but even this macbook does a great job at that.

I'm going to wait for snow leopard til I purchase, but the current specs I'd like are either this.

Macbook@ 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, 250 SSD (Can someone tell me if its worth the price, I like the idea of not worrying about a spinning, melty hard drive)

Macbook pro @ 2.66ghz, 4gbram, 320 HD @7200rpm

Both come out to roughly the same price, its in my range for what I want to spend too. Really it comes down to the extra graphics card for me, do I need it? whats the benefit? Any major battery life differences. And finally, does the SSD option really rock? I don't use firewire, and with the pro I'd probably get an expresscard SD reader or extra usb ports, that'd be it.

ON a semi related note, how well does migration assistant work? What about my system prefs, installed programs, dock look... things like that. I have a lot of versitile system prefs I've added, is it like an automatic copy to my new mac?

Out of interest, I just bought the same machine (except with 2GB of RAM). It is very, very nice, although the screen is not as impressive as the MacBook Pro (Penryn) I had previously.

it is a nice machine, i have both actually trying to decide which one to keep, while the mbp is owsome, its BIG...im so torn may just stick with the 2.4 umb....time will tell.....

Macbook

I love my macbook just got it recently it is nice for what i needed. 13 inch is just perfect for overseas travelling vice macpro is a little bigger to lug around the world.

I wonder how an enclosed hdd turning one thousand, eight hundred rounds per minute faster than another is not louder or hotter. Wow.

MB for saving money or ease of portability. MBP for screen estate or better quality of display.

Tom's Hardware did a pretty in depth review and stated that there is no measurable difference between new 5400 and 7200 drives. When the 7200's first came out there was, but not now.

I'd suggest taking a DVD with a tim burton movie, classic black and white film, or movie with a lot of nighttime scenes and watching selections on both the macbook and macbook air before making a decision.
