MBP October 2008 refresh
-New CPU Penryn
-Montevina Tecnology
-New customization options (HD;SSD;Blu Ray disk, ecc.)

Why wouldn't they update the GPU?

And why would they wait until October when back to schoolers need it by Aug/Sept? Montevina will be out in May.

I am waiting for the new MacBook Pro to come out with Penryn processor, but I don't know if it's better to wait longer for the Montevina chipset, which should give a boost in terms of overall performance, according to several threads on the subject. Should I notice many differences between the two models?
Given that rumors about a forthcoming MBP update are consistent, I wonder when the Montevina ones will be released... I suppose not before September-October (at least 6 months after the rumored speed bump with Penryn).

Am I trying to predict too much? :)

What's your opinion?

And by the time Montevina comes out you'll be thinking "maybe I should wait to see what gets unveiled at MWSF in 2009, just *another* 4 months.... and so on....

right- you can always keep waiting because there will always be a new chip on the roadmap. But unless you need/really want some feature that will be on a montevina mbp and not on a penryn mbp, what's the point? Unless you're holding out for a particular feature, the waiting-for-the-next-update game could keep you waiting forever.

Listen as far as specs and performance goes, none of the leaps have been that great, cd to c2d to sr. They are better yea, but by like 5-10%. Its really not so large that you would notice, or that would be worth waiting for, and that is over a 1.5yr period. I mean if you need i would just get it. They are all super fast. Now if you're waiting for a case redesign or for new models to come out so they will lower the refurb prices on the current models, i can understand. But really until quad core mobile processors come out, there really isn't that much of a difference.

Ok can I just ask that say you had all the money in the world and you bought the penryn mbps when they come out now would I be right in saying that really you'd only realistically buy a new mbp when the quad cores come out next year???

Also I'm just going to get the next mbp that has the next case re-design. If I got one now and they re-designed the case in fall I'd be gutted as then everyone for the next 3 years would be flashing their new shiny cases off and I'll be stuck with the 4 year old metal slab! (i am a fan of the design but jesus it needs some sort of update!)

I'm buying a new MBP when they are released but I will be monitoring the benchmarks and reviews for the Montevina MBP's and if the performance is good, I may buy one and give my girlfriend the Penryn MBP.

But as I said, it depends if the update is worth it. If not, I'll buy a new one when the Quad cores come out.

(and no, I don't have all the money in the world, I just work damn hard to pay for my hobbies).

Try to wait a few more weeks for penryn, but you should generally buy it when you need it. There's always gonna be a new processor and chipset. Someone on this forum once said, intel releases their processors and chipsets consecutively like a 'tick and a 'tock to stay competitive. After Montevina, there will soon be another succeeder to penryn and then another chipset...and so on. So, buy it when you need it and when the specs fit your needs.
