It’s very possible

Such moves are not unprecedented. I bought a top-end 2011 MacBook Pro 15 shortly after the Retina models were introduced. What would have been $2,600 from Apple was $1,000 off at MicroCenter. It is unusual that we'd see such discounts before new models are announced, but still, it's definitely worth taking a chance.

I bought the base model for my girlfriend @$1499 (the 5500m 1TB version was $1899). She called Apple and confirmed they are Apple refurbs that are being sent to retailers but they are NOT eligible for AppleCare. Microcenter has a special internal extended warranty for this deal at $149 for 3 years no deductible but does not cover accidental damage.

For us this was a very good deal. Too bad I bought mine (5500m 1TB) used @ $2100 earlier this year because that $1899 would've been sweet.

Is the Microcenter warranty as as convenient as Apple Care when you can ship your laptop from your home or you have to say in line for hours?

I am thinking about buying 15" i9 - love the keyboard and the price is good.
