AH HA! I can't find corroboration anywhere else on the internet that this problem exists, except for this thread.

I tried to run starcraft at 1920x1200 and I keep getting the margins that you are getting. I tried reinstalling like 4 times but to no avail. It's good to know it's not just me having this issue.

Every other resolution besides this one works, and unfortunately I think it's the best resolution to play on for frame rate/graphic quality.

I have the same problem here, really annoying. Seems like the best resolution for me as well, if it would work...

I'm still quite impressed with this computer, after all Macs aren't custom build PCs or MSI Gaming elite laptops. I plan to install Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 and run them at a nice 1650X1050 or 1440X900. Honestly I don't see a point in running at 2880X1800 while gaming, because;

1. Your laptop is gonna run hot

2. I probably won't be able to see the difference

3. I prefer 50FPS+ while on 1650X1050 rather than 25FPS+ on 2880X1800.

Most games look fine at 1080p or higher, so 2880x1800 is total overkill.

Here's ultra at 1680x1050: https://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=346979&stc=1&d=1341688612

Ran between 50-70fps, no lag.

This one was weird... It screwed up all the images, and went super messed up. Maybe it's just my computer acting up, but not sure why this happened...

I took a screenshot of 2880x1800, but MacRumors won't let me upload it (7.36MB) so here's a dropbox link of it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ct3litq9jyjkke7/2880 ultra.png

I guess Apple hides the cursor when taking a screenshot, so you can't see it. But it's quite small. A slight lag when controlling a big army.

By the way, all these tests were done with ultra texture, and I had a few programs running in the background (mail, chrome, ical, etc).

I'm looking at ordering an rMBP with 16 GB of RAM in a few days, and this thread has helped seal the deal for SC2 and I think WoW will run just fine.

Also, build more pylons!

If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.

I got my rmbp last week, I game SC2 a lot and reading these reviews and comments I decided to get one.

I am having major issues with really low FPS.

with 2800x1880 even on just medium textures and graphics i only get 13-15fps right at the beginning on a 1v1 game. And i know the fps only drops as the game progresses and more units appear.

even on 1900x1200 on medium settings i only get 25fps at the start of the game. I have checked using gfxcardstatus and it is using the discreet graphics.

is there something wrong? or have i configured something wrong?

Several gamers with rMBPs are having FPS issues after the EFI update, me being one of them. You can perform an SMC reset and your framerates will pop back up. I'm hoping there will be a fix soon.

thanks, yeah i spent ages doing diagnostics, evening installing windows and found that the gpu is not clocking up to 900mhz and only clocking to 225mhz.

I did an smc reset and that did indeed fix the issue.
Does the smc reset need to be done often after the EFI update?

Before the EFI update, I didn't have to perform any SMC reset. Now I find that I'm doing an SMC reset at least 2 times per week. I play WoW on a daily basis so twice per week is bearable, but still unacceptable. I'm just not used to having to reboot my MacBook all the time. I just hope there is a fix soon.

Hi I was just wondering what does SMC reset mean?

Also seeing as SC2 doesn't seem to run that well on 1920, what resolution do people prefer to use?
Native (and just tolerate the small cursor)? 1440?

I prefer to do just one above the resolution that is 1920 x 1200.

Resetting the SMC is just plugging the laptop into the charger when it is off then pressing Shift + Control + Option + Power for several seconds simultaneously then letting go. If your laptop is charging you will see a change in charger state (change in color) but if your laptop is fully charged you will not see a change in state.

I'e actually been looking for people to test SC2 on it, but never saw one, so here it is.

I got my rMBP last night, and obviously the first thing I did was install Starcraft. Quick note, the installation literally takes around 45 seconds (SSD). I was quite surprised.

I ran it at 2880x1800, ultra texture, and extreme graphics. Played a regular 2v2. No lag, consistent 30+ fps.

Hi,

I'm surprised about your performance when I can barely run it on Medium and lower resolution (around 720p only!). I forced it to go 2880px at High and it was running at 9fps and slower as the soon as the game starts! I did check the graphics and it was set to auto-switch between integrated and 650M GT so it might not have been switching o the better card so I forced it off, to no avail I'm afraid.

Please advise.

Do any of you guys use fan control software while playing? I play SC2 on my rMBP almost daily, and run SMC fan control. Just wondering if this is overkill. Without it running, my temps jump up to 90-95C pretty quickly (which worries me!)

Thanks!

No but I use an external laptop cooling pad from Targus. It was designed specifically for the (older) Macbooks so it works wonders for it.

I am not sure if I am the only one having this issue either but my frame rate has not been that good in SC2. I have it set on 1920x1080 and managed to get 30FPS with ultra settings. When combat started it would drop to maybe 11 or 12. Not sure if I should do an SMC reset or something else.

Anyone else having these problems?

Yes you should! I just did an SMC reset and my MBP 15" Retina is playing at native resolution at Ultra around 20-30fps!

Are you talking about SC2 on OS X or Bootcamp? A friend of mine and I, we're both getting 19-20 FPS on max resolution + high settings after SMC reset. Dropping hard in battles. Plus I can't even choose the resolutions 1920x1200. All I get are strange numbers like 1650x1032 or 2028x1268 on Fullscreen. On OS X that is.

Playing on Ultra Settings seems impossible. I drop to 7 frames per second in light battles.

I have the updated model with 2,7 GHz and 16 GB RAM.

Did SMC and PRAM reset twice.

Anyone suggestions?

There's a good chance it is something to do with the latest patches. I used to get 60+ fps in Wings of Liberty and now I am lucky to get 15-20 in HoTS.

Yep i've got the GFX card status app running and can see it switch to 650m when the game loads :/

See my findings here.

Seems to be one of the latest patches that "fix" this resolution crap.

I am seeing a massive improvement in OS X graphics performance after 10.8.3 and the EFI bug fix. Does SC2 still perform poorly? Unfortunately, I don't have it as I decided to boycott Blizzard and don't buy any of their games anymore.

Why do you care if SC2 still performs poorly? You're boycotting them.

i don't have any problems with blizzard games..(star2 and diablo 3) both mac and win7
