I should ask the simpliest question of them all, did you plug in the wall power when you try gaming with it?

Cause apparently i tried some wow on battery and i gave me 6 fps but if i plug in the wall power it gives me 33 fps. Just a though. :p

haha yes the power was and is pretty much always plugged in.

i reset the SMC and reinstalled mountain lion

the problem seems to have semi-resolved itself, however, i'm still not getting anything like the performance i expected, it's running more like my old mac now, but perhaps a bit better.
civ 5 still runs surprisingly badly, source engine games run ok but they always run pretty well.

i've not reset the PRAM because:

Information stored in NVRAM / PRAM includes:

Speaker volume
Screen resolution
Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any

so i don't see how this could have any effect as it just basic startup settings

thanks again for the replies all

I am running the new Counter Strike on Steam in OSX 2880x1800, full detail and its smooth as butter!

can you do me a favour?, next time you play online goto console input cl_showfps 4 (if 4 doesn't work, try 1) and let me know your average fps please?
i find the game runs a lot worse for me online than against bots.

Hi, tried my best to screenshot stuff to show you. It runs really well. Res is 2880x1800, everything is set to high, 16x Ansiotropic but no AA. Rarely saw below 45fps but here you go....

wow, thanks man i appreciate it, i was just expecting a number or 2 haha :D

i'll give it a go with the same settings and see if my frame rates are similar.

when i made this thread, playing online i was lucky to get up to 20 fps on the lowest settings. however, it has improved somewhat since then but i'm not sure why lol.

ok having said that it's gone screwed again...(and i've not changed a thing on the game or my computer!, the settings i was on before (medium-high overall on 1920x200) which it was running fine enough to play on (around 100) it now runs at about 29-32 fps but more jolty than the fps would suggest.
and SpitUK if i use the settings you're on i get between 12-16 fps...

because of this change in performance i ran another cinebench test which gave me 14.30 (when cs:go was running ok i got a score of 36.38
so for some yet to be found reason my computer is suddenly running a lot worse again (like it was when i started this thread)

p.s. something strange i've noticed is that before it screwed up again i was getting more fps in the menu than in game (which makes sense)
but now in the menu i get about the same as in game, like on maxed it just sits at about 16 fps in the main menu :/

-------
update

p.p.s. just went and had dinner, came back, thought i'd give cs:go another try... medium settings again, 112 fps in menu... so it seems making food has some effect on my computer, it literally sat there doing nothing in the mean time, i give up i can't understand how this can possibly happen :(

as you can see here my card is the GT 650M

sometimes i get a rank around 38 (cs:go runs fine)
sometimes i get a rank of around 14 (source runs very badly regardless of the graphics settings in game)

i've tried rebooting and all sorts and there seems to be no explanation, tried with and without other applications running too.

SMC reset fixes it. If you close the lid enough times the issue comes back. I have the same thing.

Processor integer performance 9831
Processor floating point performance 18293
Memory performance 7079

Geekbench 32bit test gave:
Integer Processor integer performance 9803
Floating Point Processor floating point performance 18131
Memory Memory performance 7046
Stream Memory bandwidth performance 7074
Geekbench score: 11893

Is that score right for the retina? My Late 2011 model ( not maxed out ) scores 10505: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1192692 Don't know why I was under the impression that the retina's Ivy and such should score significantly more...
