People should really stop telling others to use an external trim enabler app.

Even the guy who created it says on his site there is no longer any need to use his app since Yosemite got it onboard now.

Unfortunately, despite this apple update, there are concerns along the internet about the use of samsung evo ssd with trim...
And i have bought a samsung ssd 850 evo 500 gb yesterday...
Its pretty save, don't worry about it. Just update your firmware (if needed) with the Samsungs mac firmware update program and run OS X's own TRIM enabler.

People should really stop spreading this FUD. No tunes, did not mean you ;)

I have the smaller one the 250 gb eve installed a month back in my MBP "13 2012. Runs fine.

Dear all,

I just bought a 850 EVO 500GB to install on my MBP Mid-2012 with Yosemite.

My problem is that Disk utility doesn't detect the SSD when connected using an external dock. Also if I replace the original HDD with the SSD and boot pressing Option key, I can't see the SSD either.

I tested the SSD in a Windows environment and it works fine.

Can someone please help me solving this problem? Thanks a lot.

Can you confirm that the external dock works with other drives?

And the SSD not being seen when installed makes sense as it isn't formatted to HFS or have OS X installed on it yet. So the machine can actually see it, but it won't list it since it isn't bootable to OS X.

Ok I understand why its not recognised when installed, but when it's on the dock, disk utility should see it no?

It definitely should see it.

I made some more tests. I have Windows 7 installed via Bootcamp, and when I use the dock to connect the SSD to the MBP when Windows is running, it detects the SSD but when I try no initialise it I get an error "Device is not ready".

If I connect the SSD directly on a Windows based PC (without the dock), I can initialise it, format and create a volume.

Any other ideas?

I honestly have no clue. I have a feeling that getting a replacement drive would be the easiest fix. Taking a quick look on google, someone said that it was invisible to their mac because their pc had encrypted the drive with bootlocker and after reformatting without the encryption it worked.

I've just had HDD replaced for the same SSD (850 EVO 250G). enable TRIM after you've finished restoring OS X, but you need codes to enable it in Terminal.
I'm going to install samsung 850 EVO 500gb SSD internal on my macbook pro mid 2012 running Lion, Do I need any trim modification (enable/disable)? If yes, how do I do it? Thanks

I believe you need to set using Kedit or use Trim enabler.

With Yosemite you can just type in a command at the command line.

sudo trimforce enable

My fault, I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2. Anyway I've search Chameleon SSD is a free option for trim enabler, ever heard? Do I have to trim whenever changing the drive to a new one, or Do I have to do just once?

Sorry for the stupid questions hahah I'm just afraid of doing something wrong

- Upgrade to El Capitan and use the built-in Terminal command.
It's a one time thing as it functions on the OS level. Works across different drives.
