Nothing from Apple indicates that these will be here Thursday. Everything has been speculation from blogs and what not. Nobody has a shipment yet. I'm betting we don't see these until next week, OR Intel announces them with SB Thursday, and after the event, Apple has them in the online store, and in the real store Tuesday. #guess

***exchange policy clarification***

There's a misconception regarding Apple's exchange policy that I would like to address for everyone's benefit:

i know someone who just bought a MBP 13" 2 weeks ago, can they return it and get the "upgraded one" thursday for no charge if it is still the same price?
Nope. 14 day exchange, buddy.

Not completely true BSmith9518 - 14 days is the standard return policy, no questions asked, after which time you are stuck with the item in hand. But you have within 30 days of your purchase to exercise an unwritten exchange policy at the Apple store to switch up to a newer model if it is released within this time period; just talk to a store manager with your receipt in hand and item in the original package, and more than 90% likely they will make the exchange on the spot for just the difference in cost with their available in-store stock.

So itstheo54 your friend has at least 10 more days to "exchange" their 13" MBP for a similar updated model should the announcement take place tomorrow.

I believe there's a 45 exchange period if there's a product update. Can anyone confirm this?

It's 14 days.

Who told ya that? 14 days.

Like what was stated above, the exchange period is 30 days which is different than the standard return policy of 14 days. The Exchange period allows for one to switch to a newer/updated model of the purchased item that was released after it's initial purchase but within a thirty day window. The return policy is just two weeks to return the item for any reason and get your money back, no exchange for another item.

Hope this clears things up better.

I just bought a MBP in December. I'm guessing this is too long ago for me to receive any kind of update protection; am I correct in that assumption?

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, you're stuck with your purchase at this point as you're way pass any return/exchange policy windows. But nothing is stopping you from eBay/Craigslist your '10 MBP to put towards a newer system if you're really interested in the upgrade.

If anything I'd say you got a very excellent computer and this newer one is at best only 15-20% faster in comparison, so you might be better off actually waiting to unload it when another refresh is set to hit later in the Fall, or even in early 2012 when Ivy Bridge is officially ready, which should definitely have quad-core chipsets BTO by then (if not standard) and you'll really feel a difference in performance then from the '10 MBP.

how bout if i bought it jan 20?

You just missed the cut :(

I hope that doesn't mean they are nuking the FireWire port again... :(

i thought the point of light peak was so you could use legacy tech like usb and fw on the same connector. maybe i misunderstood and if so someone please explain lightpeak.

Light Peak is able to that, but the connector shape I'd not going to be the same as a FireWire one probably. USB shape is the way I think they are going as most things use USB more than anything. Everything else should be usable through some sort of dongle.

My 2009 MacBook pro is being replaced by Apple with a i7 2.8 machine (15") retail price $2,399. It's going to be a brand new built to order machine that will be factory sealed. Apple told me that I have to keep this machine even if a new model is released before mine arrives. If that's the case I wonder how much I can sell this machine for if it's unopened and under a full warranty. Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated!

No, not everything is speculation. Several websites confirmed the date with their own sources. And Apple has indeed shipped sealed packages, according to some reports I've read. Apple won't announce new Macs along their iPad 2 introduction. Remember last year? The entire event revolved around the iPad. Knowing Apple they'd rather steal the spotlights with the MBP's this week to do it again the next week. I could be wrong, but I've been following Apple for quite some time and this is most likely how they will roll.

You can always go to your local Apple store and try to request an exchange for the refreshed systems; the worse thing that can happen is that they'll tell you "no" and you're stuck with an awesome BTO computer. :)

$2200 minus shipping? Maybe $2300 (probably not)

My current wishlist:
-A 13" MBP with a same res screen as the current 13" Air
-Sandybridge. I don't mind the integrated graphic as long as it supports open CL and other GPU accelerations being used by OS X apps.
-An extra USB port on the right side, ala the Air
-get rid the optical drive for more battery and/or shave some weight off so it's under 4lbs or lighter.

A single SSD would be fine for me, but a double SSDs in RAID would be sweeter. :) Quad-core would be icing on the cake.

I'd sell it even less than that happily!

What does that mean ? All models will have i3 Cores or what ?
That can't be right, right ?

are you surprised of i3?
they put first crap cores in their mbp's, and after a few years, finally, they upgrade to i3 (this is realy a standard for notebooks) to create a 'wooow'-effect for brainwashed people like you

So.... with the time zones, our Australian forumites should have the pleasure of confirming the updates first? :D

No, Apple usually launches everything worldwide on 10am US Pacific time - which means that us Australians have to wait until Friday morning, since you lot in the rest of the world live in the past for us (Thursday 10am US Pacific = Friday 5am Aussie Eastern).

Brainwashed people like me ? Don't jump to conclusions here, moron.

Actually I was dissappointed when I first read "all models with i3 core" cause I didn't know that i3 hasn't been the standard for mbp so far and I though i3 would be the CPU for ALL upcoming MBP's.

It's because the c2d was the upper end of CPU's (when it was current). The core i3 is kinda the current budget model, it's offered in £399 laptops. Now performance aside to put the bottom end CPU of a range into a laptop costing over £1000 is a pisstake, even for Apple.

I pray to god they haven't removed firewire, and all will be well in the universe.

So people are going to be wetting their pants at the speed of a file transfer. Lol, how exciting, how very Intel :)

There is no mobile Core i3 that is being sold by Intel. Only i5's and i7's are. The i3 that is being cited as possibly going into the new MBP's is a desktop processor. Not gonna happen.

+1

Also if the start ram on the 17" is 8GB then there is a chance for going up to 16! :D

It would be the best if there were a G5 powerbook rumor in there...

Fingers crossed. ;) :D

My Best Buy in Little Rock, AR just received a new shipment of the current generation MacBook Pro's. I don't think we are going to see a refresh this Thursday. Just my opinion.......:(
They'll all be on sale on Friday! :D

hahaha...

Wednesday is going to go by soooo slow :(

Man, Thursday can't come quickly enough now.

holy crap...

if these rumors are true (history had convinced me not to believe them right away), then this will be one of the best macbook(pro) updates EVER!!!

34 hours and counting...

Yeah, you're definitely in a dream world. Or Japan. There's a reason Best Buy dedicates the whole friggin center of their store to optical media.

Reality is this: if this leak is to be believed, Apple is making it AN OPTION. Which is fine. I don't know what it is with some of you elitists who don't like choice. If you want to gut your crap and remove the optical go ahead. Those who want to keep it can do so. CHOICE, people. Don't try to force it. Using floppies is not an accurate comparison because movies and music were never released on floppies.

I don't understand these complaints either: if Apple is providing customers with the choice to keep an Optical Disk Drive or replace it with a SSD (while either configuration still retains a base HDD/SSD) then what's there not to like about this option?! Just a week ago people were battling it out over why it had to be "this" or "that" scenario, but now that there is a strong rumor that seems to accommodate both camps with the prospect of an actual choice people are still finding something to bemoan about the subject. Sheesh.

okay guys so because this is the fist time ive ever waited for a macbook release this..crazily? lol i wanted to know if they are usually like this. a bunch of rumors and then everyone gets dissapointed? i feel like there are so many rumors going around i dont know what to believe

Take it all with a grain of salt, along with using some common sense about the real world application/implementation of the proposed specs and you won't be so disappointed when most of the circulating rumors are proven untrue.

So waiting a pathetic year for an update got us what?

A little SSD flash for the OS (big deal), i3 (lol) and a THIRD usb port (WOW! ), a matte option that should've been there in October 2008, an option to replace what we will assume was meant to say optical drive (big deal), and a screen resolution bump on the 13" that should've been there in 2008 too, an extra what, 1 hour of battery life, and 8 GB or RAM on the 17" standard?

...

So if this is true, what's in this update? Basically nothing. Basically nothing you can't already option from Apple, or easily get equal or better with an aftermarket solution. The only real "upgrades" here are the 1440x900 on the 13, and the matte option, both of which should've been there all along. So what's the update, just making some of these things standard? Whoop-de-doo, look at that innovation.

If this is the kind of lame update Apple makes lemmings wait a year for, this is just pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

It's Apple. You can't be that surprised. :p

Right, there's no "card" just a GPU that's either integrated as part of the CPU/chipset that's soldered to the motherboard, or GPU that's a discrete chip that's also soldered to the motherboard.

Odd to hear, though, that it's "facetious" to point out technical inaccuracies here on MacRumours. I'd think that most posters would appreciate gentle guidance when they make misstatements.

I didn't think AidenShaw was being facetious at all, just the opposite.

Love it or leave it. lol j/p

Ya i3 was a given though at this point. I think ill be getting the lowest 15" i5 and if secondary HD in exchange for loss of disk drive is an option I will definitely be opting for that. Overall I am fairly content with the rumored specs. Can't wait, will be my first laptop evaaa. I just never had the use for a mobile PC until now. I have just always preferred desktops and still think the majority of my work will be done on the iMac, but it will definitely be nice to have that option.

I will get the 15in after i get married this year. Right now, I am loving my 266 i7 15". The cleanest machine i ever owned. Simply perfect.

Matte screen option only on the high end 13''? So what if I only want the base 13''? Apple sure knows how to milk money. Very greedy, if this is true. But wouldn't surprise me.

What is a policy that does not work always? If it's unwritten, then it means there is no such thing. It's totally up to the rep you are dealing with.

Yes, it's not 100% guaranteed, and yes it is at the discretion of the store manager(s) you talk to regarding it, but in all likelihood the "unwritten" 30 day exchange policy points in one's favor, especially if the individual inquires politely about it and doesn't act entitled (or begs/whines) either way of the answer they initially receive.

This "unwritten" policy can (and does) exist without actually needing to be etched in the fine print. And if you think about it it's smart from a business point of view to manage it this way, as technically they can simply say "no" and state that no such policy actually exists to enforce and act upon (which is true, legally) in such cases in which they choose for whatever reason they don't want to accommodate a (rude?) customer and /or have people abuse the "policy" and potentially ruin it for others with reasonable requests, while at the same time reaping the P.R. benefits from otherwise employing this "unofficial" policy at their discretion with potentially increasing the "customer satisfaction" metric and furthering the "good vibe" of the Apple experience at large.

Or in other words, it never hurts to ask. :)

Probably just saying its gonna be an option for the 13" this now.

That's a pretty lousy res on the 13".

Sony Vaio Z can manage 1920x1080 on their 13inch model.

Not trying to to flame, just thought screen tech was one of Apples prides.

I have a VAIO Z (1920x1080 is too high so I opted for 1600x900), it's the best laptop ever made IMO, but you pay a premium for it (over £2000!). Absolutely zero chance of a 1920x1080 screen on the 13" MBP, unless you want to pay 50% more for the machine.
