Here is my 1337 cents
1. zzZZZzzzz...
2.1 It's likely that MacBook Pro's are going to be updated on one of the Tuesdays in February, that is if Apple will follow their classic update date pattern.
2.2 If not, then updates may occur in March or another new random date. Apple is getting behind even for most casual users (Core 2 Duo machines are becoming a morally old product) and an update is neccessary to keep the volume of switchers and sales.
2.3 If Apple decides to slide on Core 2 Duo's past those dates it could mean that we will stick with current machines until summer.
Probability:
2.1 50%
2.2 35%
2.3 15%
Why:
2.1 Otherwise loss in sales to existing customer base and switchers will grow. Apple will launch new notebooks for customers to buy before iPad becomes available. Although the device and its functions are revealed, some people still see iPad as a "main mobile device" and a way to avoid buying a notebook. An update would help to prevent this. Also a nice timeframe occurs: MacBook Pro, iPad Wi-Fi, iPad 3G, iPhone, iMac, iPod+MacBook. One thing I'm still figuring out is Mac Pro and Mac Mini though.
2.2 Apple will release new MacBook Pro's just before iPad or simultaneously to lure more customers at the same time and create "ahead of the game" image with both devices complimenting each other.
2.3 With iPad on the way, the MacBook Pros will be paired with iPhones in Summer update for a strond and an A+ update respectively (as how Steve Jobs described the upcoming product pipeline).
Wrote this based on the timeframe from Buyers Guide, current situation with notebook market, some business tactics and Apple's own released information.
Info on stock shortages anybody? This wiggling around "Apple website is down" is just bullocks.
