Macbook Pro Update Soon? When to Buy?

I agree. Also, with Nehalem around the corner, Apple will either update quickly or just wait for Nehalem. With other companies shipping with Montevina, and there being obvious benefits to using the processor, I don't believe that they'll hold off, and that we'll see an update early August.
 
I know everyone (including myself!) is looking forward to the update of Apple's notbooks! There is actually a thread in the MacPro section which talks of a delay in the shipping of someone's MacPro...this person called Apple to try and get an idea of why this is happening. Apple response was that they were running "low on supply"!!!! Could this be a sign? some have suggested that Apple was using the back to school special to clear out their old stock while anticipating the release of Montevia!!! Some have also said that the update will not come until the school special is over, but I disagree because they did update thier line last year in the middle of the special!!! So, if Apple is running "low on supply" this could point to the update being as soon as July. For those who are waiting, I feel that the wait will be over sooner than expected!

That would be fantastic if true. Too bad I don't want a MacPro.

Another possibility is a lot of people held off buying until WWDC, and this is simply just a rush of orders.

No. Just... no. Montevina is LAPTOPS ONLY. The Mac Pro will not be updated again until MacWorld 2010.

We have eighteen months yet to wait.

And of course they're using the promo to clear out old stock! They do it to get rid of the iPods for the September update and the laptops and iMacs for whenever. The Mac Mini is notably not part of the promo this year. This means that they don't want to get rid of a lot of them. THAT means that they're going to let it run out of stock and discontinue it.
 
Common question with a simple answer. Buy it when you NEED it. There's always something better in the pipeline. It's the nature of technology development life cycles.

or

You can wait for the next upgrade which will always be trumped by the next upgrade.

It's laptops only as it applies to Apple, but the Montevina chipset also comes in a desktop variant which has already been released.

And I am expecting the Mac Pro update to be MacWorld 2009. :)
