I fall into the camp of really wishing for a feb update, but I don't think the alleged 10 month refresh cycle will bear itself out.

I think that apple is settling into an annual refresh for its products. And going by last year, when the MBP refresh was 2 weeks after the iPad launch, I think we can expect the same thing this year.

...dump the internal optical drive completely. There is nothing "super" about the current super-drive.

I agree with this one. I didn't even use my new MBP until after I'd replaced my SuperDrive with a 2nd HDD. Optical drives are simply not the necessity they used to be.

Even if they offered Blu-Ray, I wouldn't use it, and I have a pretty good Blu-Ray collection.

Not every MBP buyer knows about Sandy, thus they don't stop buying just because newer models could come out. It was the same last year, MBPs got ix CPUs in April, while other vendors had them in January or February.
And Apple just reported their best quarter yet.

Again, not many Apple users or prospective buyers use the internet to acquire knowledge about new CPU technologies, we at MR or other Apple related boards are just a minority.

What, you are saying that not every Mac owner is registered and reads MacRumors? I thought it was part of the contract?

Shirley, you must be mistaken.

I agree that most buyers out there have no idea of SB, but most of them do know of the existing CPU's, and when comparing what's out there today be it mac or pc's, they will notice that for example the 13" MBP's are using a very outdated C2D's...

The new 13" MBP will probably be the MBA's 13" biggest competition, as it will probably be comparable in weight, have SSD, but with increased cpu and other bells & whistles...

I doubt it - while ether will be some competition, the two machines hit different segments of the market.

While you might not need an optical drive, many people still find it useful. Until an alternative storage medium that is both as cheap and ubiquitous comes out the optical drive is here to stay.

i love this quote from apple's site:
"The Mac is loaded with high-performance technologies. Intel multicore processors are standard, so applications fly. Powerful NVIDIA graphics bring the latest 3D games to life."
"On a Mac, advanced technologies come standard.
Why Mac? Intel multicore processors. Engineering innovations years ahead of their time. And an operating system tailor-made to get the most from it all. That’s why Mac."

Advanced technologies? Engineering years ahead of their time? Maybe they should correct that to "engineering 2 generations behind the current one", lol. and of course im talking about the core 2 duo processor. How can they still use that?? I mean it will be discontinued by intel soon, which means it's not just old, it's TOO old! Like some laptops that use intel celeron or intel pentium and cost 1500 euros, lol. Come on apple, you need to move on...

true, its not that big of a difference, like iphone 3gs->4 (although this macbook pro update is expected to change a lot, if they actually believe the Air is the future of laptops). But if you check the last white macbook update (2,26ghz -> 2,4 , and GMA-> nvidia 320m), its really a HUGE difference, at least gpu-wise.
so you're all saying the difference won't be much, but i really wanna wait and see the new MBP. I can't say i wouldn't like the current one, but if im gonna buy a new laptop, i want it to be the best it can be, if you understand me.

Yes the next MBP is a new design, not just a new processor.

The Air's competition as well as the 13" MBP's competition is the new Samsung 9 series zx310.

The new MBP line had better be special, because the Air has been seriously spanked by Samsung.

My 3 (little more) year old Dell laptop is falling apart (first a broken adapter, 3 weeks ago and just one week ago my HD has started to having issues (bad sectors)) and I am maybe one of the few people that are waiting, after reading this forum for some hours, for the new release of the MPB line....
Maybe I don't need a fancy laptop at the moment which gives me the best performance, but who knows the future? I rather wait 2/3 months (hopefully that will be the longest I will have to wait) before buying a new MBP which COULD have the newest technology in it, than buying one right now. Since I can use internet on my Dell at the moment and it still starts up, I can live without the other stuff I was using my laptop for, for the moment.

welcome to the waiting club :) btw, imho, it will be 2 months TOPS

I suppose I should clarify - I USE an optical drive, but it's rare and not necessary ENOUGH in my opinion to have it on-board. I put my SD in an external enclosure, and have used it to install software and rip CDs.

I guess my point is, again in my opinion, that Apple could take all their notebooks the way of the Air, and offer the SuperDrive as an external option, leaving it out of the main chassis. In doing so, they open space for more batteries or other more critical components.

I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready for an update (imo). My black MacBook will be 3 years old next month. I'm starting to take my upper division courses (IT student), and I'm getting to where I'll have to have at minimum 3 VMs running at once to simulate a live network for administration & penetration testing. My current macbook can run a TinyXP vm without any problems, but i've only got 512mb allocated to it, and 4gb total. I think it would literally ignite if I tried to run two Win7 VMs, it locks up with one at 1gb allocated memory.
I really would like to get a new 15" i7 mbp, and while it would obviously be a considerable upgrade, i'm still considering waiting for sb. Because I know that sb will run circles around the i7's. I'm in a weird predicament of where I need something, but I can probably survive for a few more months before it becomes a real problem.

i'll suggest you wait. we don't know about the next generation, if it will or not have sandy bridge but it will sure be an improvement, either thanks to SB or maybe a flash memory like the air.
actually ive been meaning to ask, is the MBA's flash memory different from the SSD as we know them? because they made it look like it's something else... or is it just a built-in ssd?

SSD is just flash memory.

I don't know what you guys are harping about. My G4 iBook conked out last April and I am still waiting for the quad core MBP.

So you will be jumping froma G4 iBook, to a QuadCore MacBook?

.. Why?

QuadCore on MacBook will be underclocked & underspec, simple as.
