i also would not be surprised by the smallest bit if AI, TS, or any of the other rumor sites post something this weekend stating mbp's will be released on monday. you heard it here first.

Yeah, but I feel like that's less because ThinkSecret has sources and more because their M.O. is to jump on rumor-bandwagons and then release hasty and over-defensive retractions when they wind up being wrong.

That said, I'd be happy to see confirmation even from them.:eek:

A lot of people "broke" over these past couple of weeks. Their patience ran thin, or they absolutely needed the computer, and they went out and bought a yonah MBP (granted, a damn fine machine.) If the C2D MBP's don't end up releasing next week, I wonder how many more will buckle under the pressure and run out to buy a core duo MBP?

I'm buying one tuesday, update or not... i'm getting tired of walking all the way across campus to use the emacs in the basement of the school library... it's just a convenience thing, i guess, because i could definitley do without a computer. as a matter of fact, i think i'm more productive now that i don't have a computer to suck up all my free time...

And throw in the consumers that don't play the "I've got to have the latest and greatest" or "keeping up with the Jones'" games as well.

Another good look at it would be the people that wait, say 8-12 weeks, after a new model comes out for initial bugs to be fixed. So are they still getting screwed if the line is updated 3 months later?

Not really. There's always going to be something bigger and better on the not so distant horizon. I guess it comes down to getting what you need at the time, and if it's a good deal that day, so be it.

Then again, if I knew a line would be updated in the next week, then I'd wait. That's only common sense. But how often do you know when Apple will make something available (for certain) before it's available?

Granted, their Xserve approach with the 'coming in October theme' seems way off their usual mark. They've got all the information there for the initial new line already.

i'm getting very, very weak, i admit. i can see myself holding out MAYBE until early october, but i sortof cringe to even think about it. More likely, if i haven't heard anything about c2d updates by tuesday, i'm giving in.

I'm just talking about macrumors members. I don't care about anyone else. :)

speculation

Alright, so I'm switching from PC and bought a 15" MBP last Monday (9/18). Later that night I ran across this forum and have been tabbing between this site and my order tracking page all week, wondering if I should cancel the order or take a gamble that it might not ship til next week.

Well, it shipped last night from Shanghai. If the new MBP is released Monday, it'll be shipped right back unopened and I'll order a new one.

Anyone think there's a chance Apple will surprise me with an upgrade?

London's Westcoast Replenishment Figures Mean Nothing About New Models Coming

There are three Apple distributors in the UK Ingram Micro, PC2000 & Westcoast. Westcoast allows you to check their stock online here. What do you think ?

That's the clearest sign...new MBPs on 28/09/06...prepare your credit cards, gentlemen..!
I think it means they are getting a shipment of more of the same old models next Thursday. What makes you think otherwise BRL?

If there is an impending upgrade, your MBP shouldn't have shipped at all. At least that's how it's been in the past -- Apple would modify their ship dates with a 1-3 or 3-5 business day label as soon as upgrade was imminent. Right now, the Apple Store shows 24 hours.

There will be no updates next week, and the week after that ... you heard it hear first! Oh and if I'm wrong, well, thank goodness, 'cause I have my credit card oozing out of my back pocket.

probably not the upgrade, but if you don't open it you're okay to return it. I've read a lot of talk about the new mbp's...I think we get it, they're coming out next week. Does anyone know about the isight or ACD displays with a built in isight. I've been looking though this thread and have seen various mentions. Your thoughts?

New MBP From Shanghai Might Be C2D But If Not Don't Open & Return To Apple

Let us know what it says on the box. Definitely don't open it and return it no matter what happens next week if you get a CD version. The update is imminent.

Indeed - I'd expect a new system to have a new part number -- and that Apple only say to those requesting delivery that items were delayed.

Photokina Event - When will we know the time?

Does anyone know when Apple will release details of the event on Monday? I would think that info would come out before the weekend so that people could prepare to be there - or is that top-secret info as well?

The Photokina website says that it starts on the 26th (Tuesday).

That is when the event starts. But the Apple event is the day before (Monday). It says something about "Start Photokina early this year."

It would be too much of a coincidence, Multimedia...all rumors point to a revamp and the photo expo is right there...in addition, new shipments of almost ALL models sound really strange...

Sorry, I meant to be more specific - I was curious as to what time the Apple event will be on Monday. Everyone knows that it's Monday and if Apple is inviting people to the event, I would guess that there would be a start time that needs to be announced prior to Monday...

My MBP just arrived. It too came early just like the iPod.

it was supposed to arrive on Monday. ugh.

So now i get to stare at it all weekend long.

7200rpm vs 5400rpm

This may be informative to those who wish to understand more about the differences between the 7200rpm and 5400rpm drives:

http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200511/notebook_1.html

Note that the MBP uses Seagate drives that are very similar, if not identical, to those reviewed in the article.

Short version: The 7200rpm Seagate has faster seek times and transfer rates than the 5400rpm Seagate. The 7200rpm uses about 15% more power at idle, and about 10% more power while seeking, but about 5% LESS power to spin up.

NB: It's true that a drive with more capacity packs bits more densely on the platters. But this doesn't mean seek times will be reduced. The platters are the same size as before. You can confine your data to a narrow band of the platters by putting it in a small partition, but don't expect big improvements. A significant share of the seek time is spent waiting for oscillations in the head mechanism to die down. Additionally, because the bits are packed so closely together, a more precise (and therefore time-consuming) seek action is required to ensure the head is positioned correctly.

Exactly. No pending updates. Apple wouldn't ship all these current models, then suddenly pull stock on them with an "instant" update. There's usually a dwindling down time...

i disagree. apple is not going to stop shipping shortly before an update. they are going to be trying to get rid of all of their current supply of yonah mbp's. shortly after merom mbp's are released nobody is going to want a yonah anyway and then they will get stuck with them and have to sell them off as a "sale" item.

to open or not to open...

Wait out the weekend, at least. If the thing gets updated monday or tuesday, send yours back. If it doesn't...well, the next estimates as to when the mbp will be updated are vagueries like "late october" or "after thanksgiving," so if that doesn't suit you, open and enjoy your mbp.

So how long did it take your MBP to arrive? I ordered w/ the edu discount 9/18, and it shipped 9/22. According to FexEx it's in Anchorage, AK right now and delivery is estimated for 9/27! So much for 2 day shipping...worst $15 bucks I ever spent.
