"after thanksgiving"

No matter what happens Monday or on any Tuesday between now and November, the newest machines will be in stores by thanksgiving. They have to have them in supply on Black Friday.

So how long did it take your MBP to arrive? I ordered w/ the edu discount 9/18, and it shipped 9/22. According to FexEx it's in Anchorage, AK right now and delivery is estimated for 9/27! So much for 2 day shipping...worst $15 bucks I ever spent.

Maybe your $15 bought you C2D.

If not, get your money back. FedEx will have to refund the money to Apple if they do not come through on promised 2 day shipping.

All that return shipping would cost them too...

Meaning from users that send it back for the updated one?

I'll be the first to agree that Mac consumers are more affluent than the average Joe, but realistically, how many people aren't going to open the box because of a rumored update? I honestly don't think that it would really be that high.

In consideration, how many from the purchasing crowd also frequent sites like MacRumors? Of the total number of purchases, I'd be inclined to think that in the overall Mac user environment it isn't as high as some might think.

Not saying that there wouldn't be any, and even 5% is no small amount of shipping to laugh at. But considering that standard ground is usually "free", which would be how they most likely ship it back, It wouldn't actually be near what it seems. I seriously doubt that with the volume of shipments from Apple that they pay the same rate as you or I would. Not that they don't pay, of course they do. But they're getting a discount off the standard rates, and it isn't a chump 15% either. Not that we'd ever know because I'm sure there's probably a non-disclosure on it too.

Then again, of the users that even know about the ability to return, how many actually won't open their box? (overall, not just here ;))

Then of those, how many would be "turned off" by the restocking fee for an open box? Also, for consideration, are the number of BTO's that make up the total number of units shipped as well.

Either way, for a multi-billion dollar company, when it comes down to it the return shipping from them back to the consumer in such a scenario most likely a consideration.

After all that, it has seemed in the past that Apple has delayed a shipment of a unit that was going to be ugraded within the next week or so. I'm not sure about orders that were placed earlier though. For example, the person that said they made the purchase in the first week or so of this month, and then it finally shipped 2 weeks later. To me, I'd bet there's a CD sitting in the box.

In the end, it's anybody's guess. I'm inclined though, to think that Monday/Tuesday just might not happen. Mainly from the fact that units are shipping today or yesterday. Unless there's a very outside possibility that they aren't marked for delivery until next week, once the announcement (if there is one) has been made. Then, so what if it's 4pm Monday, and you get a C2D? The world already knows about it by then.

I don't know, food for thought I guess. I've been waiting to update my PB for a loooooong time. I almost jumped on the MBP when it was released, but then there were the initial issues with it, so I talked myself into waiting just a little longer for them to work out. Now comes the C2D update (whenever that is), and instead I've chosen to wait for it. At least my PB is still running just fine, so I'm not in an immediate hurry. I can sympathize with those that are unable to wait for whatever reason. The only thing I can think of is to get what you need, as there's always going to be something on the horizon.

That is when the event starts. But the Apple event is the day before (Monday). It says something about "Start Photokina early this year."

Wouldn't it make sense to introduce what you'll have on display during the event BEFORE the event starts? If they were to introduce a new thing, such as new MacBook Pros :D they wouldn't have to hide them, carry them out from their hiding place and put them on display, all while the event is going on. Now they can be like 'aaand here's the upgraded MacBook Pro (among other things), which you can try tomorrow when the event starts'.

You mean that if you ship something back to Apple for a newer model, Apple pays for the shipping?

That's when Apple will announce the Core2 Duo MacBooks, the MBPs will be sooner.

Why would they ship new revised MBP's before announcing them? That makes no sense.
Apple has done it before, for example, with the final update of the G4 Mac Mini. The purpose is to clear out remaining inventory before the new models are announced, but sometimes gaps in the inventory of the old machines ordered have to be filled with newer machines.

At some point Apple will have to pay for the shipping, at least when I sent my DOA machine back recently (a Mini) Apple did pay for the return shipping, and I presume they will pay for the shipping of the replacement. Similarly for those who return for an updated model Apple would still have to shell out for the shipping cost of the replacement (at least).

I was told by an "apple expert" that any details for any programs for upgrades could not be speculated upon and that past deals may not apply to future ones.

That's a total CYA scripted statement which makes good sense. But there is a grain of truth in it. Don't suspect that just because Apple did something one way in the past they will continue it.

Want a good example...

Look at the last iPod update. The whole line updated not incrementally. So it *could* signal, as unlikely a scenario as it is, that full lines will be updated in the future when an update happens.

MB's and MBP both updating

Hey all im new here too..been reading all the posts for the past week been wanting to get a MB..but want it with c2d...It looks like both the MB and MBP will get updated since if u look at apples website..the MB is shipping in 3-5 days which would mean they must be out of the Cd ones and are waiting to release the c2d after announcment..and also they must have excess MBP and are prob tryin to get rid of them to start selling the new ones w/ c2d next week. Looking at those two things it looks like the whole line will be updated :) hopefully i really want a MB with c2d..can u guys tell me whether its worth going for 1gb ram over 512mb??

Apple Will Refund Fast Shipping Fees If You Complain

If you phone Apple they will give you a refund for your shipping cost.

Of course Apple pays for shipping of replacements for DOA machines. But that's a bit different from paying for return shipping on a machine that has nothing wrong with it. I'm not saying that Apple doesn't do this, I just asking why Apple would do this...

Looks like monday after the event is the last day can wait...I have waited months and read numerous updates and told people to not buy until this update but come monday i will need it for school. dont make me buy a core duo, steve!

well all i have to say is monday or tuesday may be the day. If not, I will still be waiting for the update, i think it's worth the wait even if you need it. They must have been working on different things like the case or something since they're taking so long to release them. When it finally comes, i'm sure it will be worth the wait.

You Don't Buy Extra RAM From Apple But You Do Add A 1GB Stick For Sure

Your jumping to a lot of eronious conclusions none of which are necessarily correct. Yes you buy the MB with only the 512MB and then you add a 1GB stick or two. The first stick yields 1.25GB for substantially faster performance. The second one yields 2GB for a little faster performance.

Get it cheap for $118.99 a stick here.

I'll Be Waiting As Long As It Takes And Then Some For My 17" C2D

My sentiments exactly. I'm also going to wait while all you who can't wait buy one and tell us how they are. I'm not in any hurry to adopt one until I know most of the bugs have been squashed. I may even wind up optiing for a C2D MB. Dual Clovertown Mac Pro is a higher priority for me anyway.

Don't get your hopes up, it might be the school reopening buying rush. As to 1GB over 512MB, definitely! Big difference in performance there.

Same here, though I'd like to get the laptop first. Any idea when Clovertowns will be released by Intel though?

Either way don't get your hopes up...

Somehow I have a funny feeling that the next update will be very disappointing but we will all still cave in and buy just to get the wait over and done with, and then 2 months later during MWSF we will see the magnetic latches and other niceties for that extra scammed sensation.

Last I heard was late November. Very expensive tho' -- the fastest 2.66GHz model is listed at $1172 per CPU in units of 1000.

About this coming Monday/Tuesday: maybe we should start a betting pool!;)

Even though my heart yearns for an upgrade to MBP this coming week, my head tells me it isn't forthcoming.

No matter how much we read into the cyber-scraps and entrails we've all gleaned from the 'net, there's no hard evidence that there'll be an update until Oct./Nov. 2006.

Here's hoping I'm wrong!

Wow that's almost twice as expensive as current pricing

If it comes in November I might as well just push till MWSF and pick up a Reved. model cheap as a refurb, just solely for iLife 07 if anything. It is senseless, why the hell would Apple want to stall this? It makes no sense.

order placed on 16th
left Cali on the 18th (day earlier than originally stated)
arrived on 22nd (originally scheduled for 25th)

i used standard "free" shipping.

Looks like my package left Indianapolis at 5:00 a.m. this morning. Should be about a 2 hour flight, but Fed-Ex still says it's coming on the 27th.

At least you got your order in on the 16th and got the iPod deal. I missed it by 2 days, only to turn around and find out that chances are I bought a laptop that will be outdated by the time it hits my doorstep.

Here's an idea: can you return purchases made online to an Apple store? I'm going to the Ole Miss game this weekend...about an hour from Memphis. If they go through with the update and I still get a CD, I think I could sneak away long enough to swap for a C2D. Anyone ever tried this?
