Somehow I have a funny feeling that the next update will be very disappointing but we will all still cave in and buy just to get the wait over and done with, and then 2 months later during MWSF we will see the magnetic latches and other niceties for that extra scammed sensation.

I don't doubt that you're right. If we get updated MBP's on monday/tuesday, I can't realistically imagine them doing anything to the case--it's just going to be a simple processor trade out. I would love to be proven wrong (because I usually am anyway :) ) but I don't even see them releasing updates next week to the MB or the MBP. I just have a feeling. Perhaps it's the tuesday after tuesday after tuesday of no updates that's getting to me, and I'm just completely jaded now.

Could be, but if they're just going to drop in the Merom and change nothing else substantial, then why have they waited this long?

But yeah, even so, I will cave and get it immediately. My PowerBook is over 3 years old, a first-gen 17".

Apple Will Pay Return Shipping Cost For Unopened Stock Orders

Looks like my package left Indianapolis at 5:00 a.m. this morning. Should be about a 2 hour flight, but Fed-Ex still says it's coming on the 27th.

At least you got your order in on the 16th and got the iPod deal. I missed it by 2 days, only to turn around and find out that chances are I bought a laptop that will be outdated by the time it hits my doorstep.

Here's an idea: can you return purchases made online to an Apple store? I'm going to the Ole Miss game this weekend...about an hour from Memphis. If they go through with the update and I still get a CD, I think I could sneak away long enough to swap for a C2D. Anyone ever tried this?
No but Apple will pay for the return shipping. Just phone them NOW to make the arrangements and they will email you a PDF pre-paid shipping label you can print and slap on the unopened box and hand back to the delivery guy. This is assuming you did not BTO anything. If you BTOed it, you will have to lobby for an exchange/upgrade to the C2D model.

What were you thinking? You had no idea C2D was on the way inspite of the new iMacs right after Labor Day?

Don't Forget The Intel Developer's Conference In San Francisco Is This Week As Well

I will be surprised if it's not Monday. There must be a lot of folks like us waiting it out. It's not like C2D is a big secret. It will have been three weeks since Apple introduced C2D iMacs already. That's a pretty big red flag to any prospective buyer of any other model don't you think?

Also this week is the Intel Developer's Conference in San Francisco. It will be a natureal for Apple to want to have the new C2D mobile Macs in that Apple Store only a few blocks from Moscone during this show. There are even two Apple sessions at the conference. So it's not just Photokina in Germany that's driving this date. It's also the Intel Developer's Conference in San Francisco.

BTW Check out my Apple mixed message RAM pricing analysis over on the parallel, but even more pessimistic, thread on this subject.

Multi, I've been following this thread because I was hoping I'd be able to swap for an upgrade--if it comes. My MBP arrived on Monday, I've not opened it yet, but it is a bto with extra ram (only diff). Do you think I have a chance at exchanging it for one without extra ram? I've not been thinking it would be possible, but seeing your post "you will have to lobby..." made me think you might have heard of such an occurance. Yes?

Yes - you have a chance - kinda like a snowballs chance in hell. Apple is very strict on NOT taking CTOs back for exchange or refund.

I think there's a chance if you opt for the same additional RAM upgrade with the new order. Phone Apple and ask them + a supervisor. You'll need to be aggressive. Wonder why you did that?

Nope, not a clue. I'm new to Apple so I'm not familiar with their rollout strategies. I'll definitely be watching these boards next time.

Apple made the upgrade by mistake--long story--so it's not so clear cut; not that I'll be bothering them about it if I keep it. Anyway, if you've read Dante, you know that a snowball has a pretty decent chance in hell, at least in some parts it (the ninth circle, the frozen Lake Cocytus).

everything is 24 hrs shipping in US Store

Maybe they are betting on people who order and forget about it, not everyone is like us who parses MR forums every day... some do order and become completely oblivious to upgrades that are released a few days later...

Fry's Blows Headline For C2D 17" iMac $999 Ad Saturday

Can you believe it? They put it in the fine print but blow the headline:

Frankly I am with Multimedia on this one, no easy HD panel = no deal. I really can't justify the extra $1000 premium on merely a graphics card, the backlit keyboards and stuff are fairly nice but that's about where it ends. "Fairly nice" but those are not deal makers for me.

Because they are readying sheep for the slaughter, anyone who purchased a Rev-E PBG4 last October can attest to this, they release it during Photokina, sucker in a lot of buyers, and 2 months later during MWSF... "Look, 5X faster Intel MBPs!"

Fry's gets everything wrong all the time. I love going into the store, but god forbid I should ever want to buy anything remotely technical because finding help is a pain, and finding anyone with any sort of knowledge is even harder.

Come on. You can't tell me you didn't know that 2006 was going to be all about transition to the Yonah processor as of January 2006. I don't think you were suckers. More like uninformed consumers who failed to seek professional help. Any consultant would have told you to WAIT.

I would say that if Apple made a mistake then there is a better than snowballs chance in hell - an Apple "mistake" is a key piece of information. I don't think Apple operates near the "ninth circle" ;)

Although, I think hell may well freeze over before we see this long, long awaited upgrade

What I meant to say is Apple has no quelms about waiting for extended periods before upgrades, and then release a mediocre upgrade to round up the suckers even though they already have a fantastic upgrade in store.

My guess is the next upgrade next Monday will be just as it was last year.

Well, we know Santa Rosa will be coming along around April. That should be a big step up. It would seem to make more sense to do a reasonably large upgrade now, then again in April/May, rather than just a bump now, then a new design in January, and a new motherboard in April/May.

But we will have to wait and see.
